Volume Two September 12, 1980 Number One No Nukes Jackson, CSM, the Boss and more rally against nuclear power
by Denise Sullivan
"We're citizens ofthe planet first and performers second. As musicians, we're simply in a position to draw attention to the cause. And if we don't protest, there's not going to be a place left to play." -Bonnie Ra.tt songwriter musician
Not real profound words, true. But they get the point across. What Miss Raitt is trying to convey is the fact that she and her colleagues care about the earth and its people first. Their music and money is secondary. They're the first to admit that by no means are they experts on the subject. They simply have a way to reach the masses, and it was the least they could do to support the crusade for No Nukes. No Nukes is Julian Schlossberg's and Danny Goldberg's new documentary concert film which accurately depicts the MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) concerts crusade held just about one year ago in New York City. The film follows the jV/fAVf-icians from their initial planning meetings, to rehearsals, to press conferences and finally to the Madison Square Garden stage, where each performer puts on his/her "show of a lifetime." Granted, the concert sequences are the most entertaining, but who can complain about short scenes of Jackson Brown (who talks about the consequences nuclear waste may have on his young and only son) at home, or Carly Simon, playfully rehearsing backstage. There is never a dull moment to be had. Even one's less favorite performers become likeable immediately on the big screen. So who's in this thing anyway? Musicians and anti-nuke activists galore, but some crucial names may lure you. . . Jackson Browne, Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Doobie Brothers. John Hall, Bonnie Raitt. Gil Scott-Heron. Carly Simon,Bruce Springsteen!!) James Taylor and Jesse Colin Young are the featured performers. However, one may catch glimpses of Phoebe Snow, Chaka Khan, Nicolette Larson and even Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, if he watches closely. Only proud Thomas Petty is significantly missing from the roster of talent who performed at the concerts, but didn't make it on film. The film opens with a wild crowd (not necessarily anti- nukers, but music fans) anticipating the event at the Garden. They are greeted with the exuberant Carly and James and a flawless rendition of "Mockingbird." From this point in the film one knows that the rest will be equally superb. From lighting and camera angles, to the concert-level soundtrack, everything is nearly perfect as far as a concert setting. One will swear he's there, (cont. on page 9)
