Different methods used to stain senile plaques (SPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) might account for this discrepancy. Subjects and methods: Here, brains of 11 patients with dementia were examined. Cryosections and paraffin sections from 6 different brain regions (frontal medial, temporal medial and occipital gyrus, hippocampus, superior parietal lobe and cerebellum) of all cases were stained with Bielschowsky, Campbell, Gallyas and Congo red stains each. Results: The study shows that the Bielschowsky silver stain is insufficient for detecting SPs and NFTs, whereas two other methods proved to be more accurate. SPs were found in similar frequency in all brain regions examined (exception: cerebellum). The highest amount was shown with Campbell silver stain in paraffin sections. In Congo red only 25 percent of these SPs were stained, which is probably due to a great number of them not containing any amyloid. NFTs were found almost exclusively in the hippocampus.

Paciello Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, Unit of Pathology, University of Naples Federico II, Napoli, Italy [Received 24 September 2014; Accepted 2 October 2014] The understanding of mechanisms that provoke neurological diseases in humans and in animals has progressed rapidly in recent years, mainly due to the advent of new research instruments and our increasing liability to assemble large, complex data sets acquired across several approaches into an integrated representation of neural function at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels. Nevertheless, morphology always represents the essen- tial approaches that are crucial for any kind of interpretation of the lesions or to explain new molecular pathways in the diseases. This mini-review has been designed to illustrate the newest and also well-established principal methods for the nervous tissue collection and processing as well as to de- scribe the histochemical and immunohistochemical staining tools that are currently most suitable for a neuropathological assessment of the central nervous system. We also present the results of our neuropathological stu- dies covering material from 170 cases belonging to 10 different species of mammals. Specific topics briefly addressed in this paper provide a technical and practical guide not only for researchers that daily focus their effort on neuropathology studies, but also to pathologists who occasionally have to approach to nervous tissue evaluation to answer questions about neuro- pathology issues.

PLATES 15 TO 17 (Receivedfor publication,October 29, 1930) Although symptoms that can be referred to the central nervous system have been observed clinicallyin hog cholera (I, 2, 3), papers dealing with the anatomical lesions are few and far from complete. Von Hutyra and Marek (2) state that the spasms, convulsions, stag- gering, and lethargy are due to hemorrhages in the meninges and brain substance. They further note that convalescent animals may sud- denly die with symptoms of brain hemorrhage. Huguenin (4) found hemorrhages, edema, hyperemia, and inflammatory processes in vari- ous degrees in about 20 per cent of the cases studied. Later Brun- schwiler (5) studied the central nervous system in various swine diseases. Among these were seven cases of hog cholera in which hyper- emia, edema, hemorrhages in the meninges, and meningitis wcrc found. In one case there were inflammatory lesions in the brain substance. He collecteddata on 61 cases of hog cholera, some of these cases being from the literature, and showed that brain lesions were present in 24 cases,or 39.3 per cent. In the descriptionsof lesionsof the centralnervous system that have been published there are no notes concerning the glia and nerve cells, and the distributionof the inflammatory reactionhas not been studied.
