  • Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Stirling Online Research Repository Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century A Catalogue D. W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities. Unattributed quotations with dates are from Dod’s Parliamentary Companion, as presented in Who’s Who of British Members of Parliament.

  • Beale Blackwell Colvin (1809 – 1864)
BEALE BLACKWELL COLVIN (1809 – 1864) A resident and for a short period, owner of Pishiobury House, Sawbridgeworth The name of Beale Colvin is another one of those which many people today in Sawbridgeworth would either not have heard of, or know very little about. He did not reside in Sawbridgeworth for very long, but his story and that of his family is interesting and is worthy of being retold. Beale Colvin was born in the year 1809. The records are a little vague, but he was almost certainly born at the family home of Monkhams Hall, Waltham Abbey. Unfortunately, the actual birth record appears lost. Furthermore, the surname in those days was spelt in a number of ways, such as Colville, adding to the confusion. Beale was the son of Robert Sharp Colvin (1765-1825) and his wife Susannah (Dyson) (1772- 1839?). Through his marriage to Susannah, Beale’s father Robert had inherited Monkhams Hall, which was once described as ‘the biggest house in Waltham Cross’. Robert Sharp Colvin was a wealthy industrialist. In partnership with a Mr. Beale Blackwell (1752- 1818) (after whom he named his son, ‘our’ Beale) he was the manufacturer of ink for the printing trade. The company was then known as Blackwell and Colvin. It was recorded in The London Book Trades, 1775-1800 at King Street and Goswell Street (since 1864,z Goswell Road). These are (and were) desirable areas of London, and so it is likely that the addresses given were where Robert Colvin and Beale Blackwell resided at that time but not where they produced their ink.

"IT is a useful employment for societies, as well as individuals, to look back through their past history and mark the dealings of a kind Providence toward them." (Bishop Meade.) "It is wise for us to recur to the history of our ancestors. Those who are regardless of their ancestors, and of their pos terity, who do not look upon themselves as a link connecting the past with the future in the transmission of life from their ancestors to their posterity, do not perform their duty to the world. To be faithful to ourselves we must keep our ancestors and posterity within reach and grasp of our thoughts and affec tions. Living in the memory and retrospect of the past, and hoping with affection and care for those who are to come after us, we are true to ourselves only when we act with becoming pride for the blood we inherit, and which we are to transmit to those who shall fill our places." (Daniel Webster.) "I have never known a person whose self-reliance was of so austere a cast that he did not take pleasure when it was in his power to do so in tracing his de scent from an honored line." • High Sheriff of Essex - Essex Coastal Path Walk August 2020
High Sheriff of Essex - Essex Coastal Path Walk August 2020 As part of my High Sheriff Year Paul and I are walking from Harwich to Tilbury as outlined below. It would be really good to have youth groups, local community groups, friends and family share in this experience by joining us on one or more of the 10 legs. Mindful of COVID-19 this is not an organised group event but an opportunity to encourage you to get out and see the beautiful Essex countryside and share the experience (with your group leaders in the case of youth groups) within your ‘bubbles’ and socially distanced from other walkers/bubbles. Details of the route that we will be taking will be available from next week (although this may need to be changed at short notice due to extenuating circumstances – as with all hikes!!) Aim: Raise awareness of the beautiful Essex coastline, coastal towns and environmental issues. Raise awareness and engage others in the pleasures of walking for physical and mental wellbeing. Encourage and engage young people to experience the physical and mental benefits of being outdoors, walking in the countryside and to celebrate their achievements. Although fund raising is not a key aim of the walk, should you wish to make a donation to The High Sheriffs’ Fund for the benefit of Essex-based charities it is always much appreciated. The HS fund is administered by Essex Community Foundation. Sort code: 40-51-62 Account number: 28 34 39 54 or by cheque to ‘The High Sheriffs’ Fund’ posted to me at Westwick Farm, Rookery Lane, North Fambridge, Essex.
