High Sheriff of Essex - Essex Coastal Path Walk August 2020 High Sheriff of Essex - Essex Coastal Path Walk August 2020 As part of my High Sheriff Year Paul and I are walking from Harwich to Tilbury as outlined below. It would be really good to have youth groups, local community groups, friends and family share in this experience by joining us on one or more of the 10 legs. Mindful of COVID-19 this is not an organised group event but an opportunity to encourage you to get out and see the beautiful Essex countryside and share the experience (with your group leaders in the case of youth groups) within your ‘bubbles’ and socially distanced from other walkers/bubbles. Details of the route that we will be taking will be available from next week (although this may need to be changed at short notice due to extenuating circumstances – as with all hikes!!) Aim: Raise awareness of the beautiful Essex coastline, coastal towns and environmental issues. Raise awareness and engage others in the pleasures of walking for physical and mental wellbeing. Encourage and engage young people to experience the physical and mental benefits of being outdoors, walking in the countryside and to celebrate their achievements. Although fund raising is not a key aim of the walk, should you wish to make a donation to The High Sheriffs’ Fund for the benefit of Essex-based charities it is always much appreciated. You may also like to bring a pen and notebook to jot down your thoughts for a blog to be published by Visit Essex. W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities.   • Beale Blackwell Colvin (1809 – 1864)
    BEALE BLACKWELL COLVIN (1809 – 1864) A resident and for a short period, owner of Pishiobury House, Sawbridgeworth The name of Beale Colvin is another one of those which many people today in Sawbridgeworth would either not have heard of, or know very little about. He did not reside in Sawbridgeworth for very long, but his story and that of his family is interesting and is worthy of being retold. Beale Colvin was born in the year 1809. The records are a little vague, but he was almost certainly born at the family home of Monkhams Hall, Waltham Abbey. Unfortunately, the actual birth record appears lost. Furthermore, the surname in those days was spelt in a number of ways, such as Colville, adding to the confusion. Beale was the son of Robert Sharp Colvin (1765-1825) and his wife Susannah (Dyson) (1772- 1839?). Through his marriage to Susannah, Beale’s father Robert had inherited Monkhams Hall, which was once described as ‘the biggest house in Waltham Cross’. Robert Sharp Colvin was a wealthy industrialist. In partnership with a Mr. Beale Blackwell (1752- 1818) (after whom he named his son, ‘our’ Beale) he was the manufacturer of ink for the printing trade. The company was then known as Blackwell and Colvin. It was recorded in The London Book Trades, 1775-1800 at King Street and Goswell Street (since 1864,z Goswell Road). These are (and were) desirable areas of London, and so it is likely that the addresses given were where Robert Colvin and Beale Blackwell resided at that time but not where they produced their ink.

    Election of Vice President – Jenny Tolhurst Dear Executive Committee Members I have a nomination for a Vice President of the Essex Association of Local Councils. It is important that the Vice Presidents will be able to support the work of the EALC and speak well of us in a network working opportunity. Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Essex is Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst who is Her Majesty the Queen's personal representative in the county. The main duty of the Lord-Lieutenant is to uphold the dignity of the Crown in Essex, including encouraging voluntary service and benevolent organisations, helping to create a spirit of co-operation in the county, supporting business and industry and the social life of Essex. The appointment is non- political and unpaid. Mrs Tolhurst is the first woman to be appointed Lord-Lieutenant in the county since the office was established in the 1500s. She was appointed in August 2017. She has been involved with the voluntary sector all her married life. She started the Danbury and Little Baddow fund-raising branch of the NSPCC, chaired the Prince’s Youth Business Trust in Essex, served as a Magistrate and was High Sheriff of Essex in 2005-06. Since then she has worked voluntarily for the Catholic Diocese of Brentwood, been Vice-Chairman of the Governors of New Hall School and has served on the High Sheriffs’ National Council. Mrs Tolhurst is Vice-President of the Essex Community Foundation, serves on Essex University Court, and is Chairman of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace in Essex.
