Of these transcripts the earliest known to exist is one in the Library at Brogyntyn. It was probably written within 45 years of the death of the author; but besides that, it contains a great number of notes and additions of nearly the same date, which have never yet appeared in print. The Lord Lieutenant is thus the chief executive authority in that county, through whom the policy decisions of the central government would be directed. Conversely he would represent the considerations of the county at Court and to the government. Because of these exalted duties the honour was usually given to the principal aristocratic landowner in the county. Deputy lieutenants would be appointed to carry out the directions given by him. The office also had the power to recommend, and so thus constitute, the Commission of the Peace, the body of justices of the peace or magistrates who supervised the legal and administrative systems of the county though the medium of their Quarter Sessions court. The Lord Lieutenant also had responsibility for local defence and accordingly controlled the county militia forces. This aspect of his work is dealt with in more detail in the second introduction. The collection catalogued below contains some of the working papers, mainly correspondence, of four successive Lord Lieutenants of Caernarvonshire and one future Lord Lieutenant as a Vice Lieutenant.

W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities. Unattributed quotations with dates are from Dod’s Parliamentary Companion, as presented in Who’s Who of British Members of Parliament.

NGR: SH 5384 6953 © Crown copyright: Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales: Dating Old Welsh Houses: North West Wales Dendrochronology Project HOUSE DETAILS: An ‘important sub-medieval house which appears to be constructed in at least three or four phases, beginning in the early-mid C16 as a 2-unit house with lateral chimney, consisting of the ground floor of hall, passage and small outer room. It reached the present E-shaped plan in the early-mid C17, with the addition of a storeyed porch over the entrance, and a similar oriel bay at the E end: rear stair wing dated on close-studding, 1638. The E-plan was completed towards the end of the C17 with the addition of a larger N wing on the W side [...]. Outbuildings attached to the W end are later, mostly C19.’ (CADW listing description). ‘Lavish version of Snowdonia plan-type with projecting oriel, porch and later kitchen (?1660s) giving a busy front elevation. House has a contemporary rear parlour wing. Service rooms were in basement under the hall.   • Beale Blackwell Colvin (1809 – 1864)
    BEALE BLACKWELL COLVIN (1809 – 1864) A resident and for a short period, owner of Pishiobury House, Sawbridgeworth The name of Beale Colvin is another one of those which many people today in Sawbridgeworth would either not have heard of, or know very little about. He did not reside in Sawbridgeworth for very long, but his story and that of his family is interesting and is worthy of being retold. Beale Colvin was born in the year 1809. The records are a little vague, but he was almost certainly born at the family home of Monkhams Hall, Waltham Abbey. Unfortunately, the actual birth record appears lost. Furthermore, the surname in those days was spelt in a number of ways, such as Colville, adding to the confusion. Beale was the son of Robert Sharp Colvin (1765-1825) and his wife Susannah (Dyson) (1772- 1839?). Through his marriage to Susannah, Beale’s father Robert had inherited Monkhams Hall, which was once described as ‘the biggest house in Waltham Cross’. Robert Sharp Colvin was a wealthy industrialist. In partnership with a Mr. Beale Blackwell (1752- 1818) (after whom he named his son, ‘our’ Beale) he was the manufacturer of ink for the printing trade. The company was then known as Blackwell and Colvin. It was recorded in The London Book Trades, 1775-1800 at King Street and Goswell Street (since 1864,z Goswell Road). These are (and were) desirable areas of London, and so it is likely that the addresses given were where Robert Colvin and Beale Blackwell resided at that time but not where they produced their ink.
