The meeting is being hosted by Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson and Minister for Elderly Care and Public Health Maria Larsson. The purpose of the meeting is to find avenues for concrete and practical cooperation, based on experience gained in Europe and Asia. The meeting will focus on preventive work - on how to avoid being infected - and focus specially on young people. Within the framework of international cooperation to combat the AIDS epidemic undertakings have been made to take preventive action and to satisfy care needs. However, much remains to be done as regards practical implementation. The meeting in Stockholm is about preventive work and structural factors, which are crucial to prevent the spread of AIDS and safeguard respect for human rights. The first day of the meeting will consist of field visits to various organisations and activities in Sweden to show how we work with HIV and AIDS here. The idea is to start up a discussion about whether the Swedish model in this area is applicable to Asia. Time and place: Ms Carlsson and Ms Larsson will be available to meet the media at around 09.00 on Tuesday 5 June after their opening addresses. Place: Nalen, Regeringsgatan 74, Stockholm -------- ASEM is a forum for dialogue and cooperation between EU Member States, the European Commission and sixteen countries in Asia and the ASEAN Secretariat that discusses economic, social and cultural issues in order to strengthen cooperation between the two regions. The meeting on 4-5 June is being arranged by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, Sida and the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. It is a follow-up of the first ASEM meeting on HIV and AIDS that was held in November 2005 in Ho Chi Minh City. Around 100 expert delegates from Europe and Asia will participate in the meeting. The programme includes study visits, panel discussions and interactive sessions.
