A cast of 22 powerful, energetic and marvellously performing actors from the internationally acclaimed London companies PROPELLER and SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE are coming for the very first time to Kronborg Castle, to delight audiences in the castle courtyard with three fabulous theatre experiences in the open air. THE COMEDY OF ERRORS is a hilariously funny production. A story of misunderstanding and swapped twins. From the first moment the scene is set for fun with fruit cocktails, Spanish guitar and song - a glorious universe of crazy humour, funny ideas and a quite exceptional gallery of characters. Before you even find your seat, you begin to smile. The action quickly gathers speed and the complications get funnier and funnier. In this production the body bags pile up in the hospital where Richard in cold blood murders his way to the throne. We watch with horror and a shudder of delight when Richard slaughters his opponents with a chainsaw, drowning, cannibalism or other forms of mutilation. Richard is a charming psychopath, shrewd, convincing and dangerous – at the end, though, most to himself.     Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance vol. 15 (30), 2016; DOI: 10.1515/mstap-2017-0001 Robert Sawyer and Varsha Panjwani Introduction: Shakespeare in Cross-Cultural Spaces The seeds for this volume were planted in the fertile soil of Guimarães, Portugal, during a colloquium organized by Francesca Rayner and the Centre for Humanistic Studies of the Universidade do Minho in October 2015, where scholars presented papers on the subject of “Shakespearean Collaborations.” Two themes emerged across many of the papers: the intercultural negotiation through Shakespeare and the consideration of spatial studies of Shakespeare. These ideas, germinated in Portugal, were then cross-pollinated with similar topics by other multinational Shakespearean scholars for this special issue on “Shakespeare in Cross-Cultural Spaces.” As we worked on this issue through 2016, the significance of discussing our first theme of cross-cultural relations became increasingly urgent. While, on the one hand, the world was marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, on the other hand, political and cultural borders were being re-imagined and re-made: the United Kingdom voted to exit from the European Union, the mass-migration of refugees from war-torn countries such as Iraq, Syria and Libya continued to increase, and the U.S. president, Donald Trump, threatened to build a wall across the Mexican border during his campaign. It seemed that the currents of Shakespeare studies and performance, which were celebrating diversity and interculturalism as witnessed by publications such as Shakespeare, Race and Performance: The Diverse Bard (2016) and productions such as Royal Shakespeare Company’s Hamlet with the Black actor, Paapa Essiedu, in the lead role (both reviewed in this issue), were moving in the opposite direction to these international events.

    HAMLET, THE GHOST AND THE MODEL READER THE PROBLEMS OF THE RECEPTION AND A CONCEPT OF SHAKESPEARE’S HAMLET Doctoral dissertation by András G. Bernáth Supervisor: Prof. Guido Latré, PhD Université Catholique de Louvain 2013 ABSTRACT In a comprehensive study of Hamlet and its reception, this dissertation offers a concept and interpretation of Shakespeare’s work as a complex literary work and play for the theatre. It is argued that the play, through a series of ambiguities, implies two main levels of meaning, which complement each other in a truly dramatic contrast, exploring the main theme of Hamlet and dramatic art in general: seeming and being, or illusion and reality. On the surface, which has been usually maintained since the Restoration, Hamlet seems to be a moral hero, who “sets it right” by punishing the evil villain, the usurper King Claudius, following the miraculous return of the murdered King Hamlet from the dead. At a deeper level, exploring the Christian context including King James’s Daemonologie (1597), the Ghost demanding revenge is, in fact, a disguised devil, exploiting the tragic flaw of the protagonist, who wishes the damnation of his enemy. Fortinbras, who comes from the north like King James and renounces revenge, is rewarded with the kingdom after the avengers, Hamlet and Laertes, kill each other and virtually the entire Danish court is wiped out through Hamlet’s quest of total revenge, pursuing both body and soul. The aesthetic identity of Hamlet is also examined. In addition to the mainly philological and historical analysis of the text, the play, some adaptations and the critical reception, theoretical concerns are also included.

    On 25 September 1629 Kronborg was devastated by fire, Kronborg (Denmark) only the walls being left standing. Christian IV immediately commissioned the Surveyor General, Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger, to carry out the restoration of the castle, which No 696rev largely conformed with its original appearance. From 1658 to 1660 Kronborg was occupied by the Swedes, and was subjected to heavy bombardment and looting. Under Frederik III and Christian V large fortifications were built, including the ornate Kronværk (Crownwork) Gate. It is a place where fiction currently eclipses history, at least in the context of a cultural tourist industry where Shakespeare’s name is worth a great deal more than Danish national heritage sites. Indeed, Kronborg is now widely marketed as ‘Hamlet’s Castle’ and the town of Elsinore has acquired the suffix ‘Home of Hamlet’. This article examines the signifiers implied in the naming and renaming of Kronborg as a Shakespearean location, while also looking at its unique international Shakespearean performance tradition, which spans two centuries. It describes how the identity of the castle has been shaped by its Shakespearean connection against the backdrop of changing ideologies in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and poses questions as to how this identity may continue to develop within the current contexts of renewed nationalism in Europe and the world.     CANADIAN REVISIONIST DRAMA: PERFORMING RACE, SEXUALITY, AND THE CULTURAL IMAGINARY by Kailin Wright A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Kailin Wright, 2012 Canadian Revisionist Drama: Performing Race, Sexuality, and the Cultural Imaginary Kailin Wright Doctor of Philosophy Department of English, University of Toronto, 2012 Abstract My dissertation examines how Canadian revisionist plays adapt popular narratives—national histories, Greek myths, Shakespearean plays, and colonial legends—by changing the identities of marginalized characters and cultural groups. While Linda Hutcheon defines adaptation as repetition with difference, I define revisionist drama as repetition with politicized difference. It is this politicized difference that transforms the identifications of the original marginalized characters, and, as a result, changes their roles in the cultural imaginary. Canadian revisionist plays critique cultural figures such as Philomela, Othello, and Pocahontas as reductive emblems of necessarily complex, layered racial, sexual, and gendered identities. Though this dissertation concentrates on Canadian literature, it also considers European sources (Ovid, Homer, Shakespeare) as well as theories of historiography (Filewod, Salter), speech acts (Austin, Butler), audience reception (Bennett), and publics (Habermas, Warner). My project ultimately outlines a set of twelve literary and dramatic strategies that are repeatedly used to challenge popular conceptions of what it means to be Black, Aboriginal, Canadian, queer, and female. ii Revisionist adaptation is a leading form of political protest in contemporary Canadian theatre. With attention to eight playwrights—Margaret Atwood, Margaret Clarke, Marc Lescarbot, Monique Mojica, Daniel David Moses, Djanet Sears, Erin Shields, and the collective group Optative Theatrical Laboratories (OTL)—this study examines the shared methodologies of late twentieth-century revisionist dramas.
