With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. The screenplay, House of Cards, follows the original character of Miranda Greene as she attempts to understand insanity in Gotham’s most famous criminal, the Joker. The research for this project includes a detailed look at the comic book’s publication history, as well as previous film adaptations of Batman, and Batman in other relevant media. -

William Uricchio The Batman’s Gotham City™: Story, Ideology, Performance The trademark affixed to Batman’s Gotham City™ suggests something of its special status. Plastered across games, amusement park rides, toys, and other collectables, Gotham City as brand is a highly valued asset not only of the Batman franchise, but of the larger corporate entities of DC Comics and Warner Bros. As a place marker and invocation of urban space, Gotham City’s protected legal status in fact extends to little more than a ten-letter sequence. It lacks borders, elected officials, citizens – none of which is surprising given its fictional status. But it does have a history and a raison d’être, and with them an accretion of representational strategies, icons, and of course, characters. This essay will side-step the value of Gotham City as intellectual property and generator of profits, looking at it instead as a generative element in the production of Batman narratives and related ideological value systems, both of which offer an opportunity to rethink urban cartographies as enacted rather than objective spaces. As the Riddler once put it, “When is a man a city?” “When it’s Batman or when it’s Gotham…. It’s huge and contradictory and dark and funny and threatening.” (Gaiman 1989) It is difficult to argue with this broad spectrum of descriptors. And yet the Riddler’s remarks regarding the mutual definition of the character and the city bring with them a crucial implication. Panoptic Reflections of Gotham and the Failure of the Dispositive
Praxes of popular culture No. 1 - Year 9 12/2018 - LC.8 [sic] - a journal of literature, culture and literary translation Marko Lukić, University of Zadar, Croatia ([email protected]) Gazing over Chaos: Panoptic Reflections of Gotham and the Failure of the Dispositive NOTE: Due to a possible editorial conflict of interest the author did not participate in the editing/publishing process of this issue of the journal. Abstract What this analysis proposes is a reevaluation of the crucial, and often neglected, issues of space/place within the Batman opus, concentrating primarily on Batman’s use of various spaces/places in order to enforce control and/or discipline. The study will initially be premised on the use of the Foucauldian discourse regarding the implementation of invisible control and therefore power, structuring its arguments around the theoretical concepts of the dispositive/apparatus as well as Bentham’s Panopticon. The paper will develop the idea of the Batcave as the actual site of control, the starting point of the Foucauldian notion of the “gaze being alert everywhere” ( Discipline and Punish 195). Symbolically made visible by the prominent brightness of the Bat-signal, but nevertheless constantly hidden from the eyes of the criminals, the Batcave assures the presence of power that “should be visible and unverifiable” (Foucault, Discipline 201), and therefore exerts discipline. The paper will also address the issue of Crime Alley as a site of inversion by using the theoretical concept of heterotopian space as proposed by Foucault, as well as Gaston Bachelard’s idea of subjective/domestic spaces. Following the idea of a space recoded by tragedy, the analysis will explore the immunity of Crime Alley in relation to Batman’s disciplinary praxis and the Panoptic gaze, as well as its potential to subvert Batman’s “laboratory of power” (Foucault, Discipline 204). -

CATHERINE UNIVERSITY April 1, 2014 2 With many thanks to Patricia Montalbano (project advisor), Rachel Neiwart Emily West and Sharon Doherty for their continuous and invaluable interest, assistance, and patience with the project. 3 Introduction When presented with the simple silhouette of a stylized bat inside a yellow oval, people the world over are able to recognize this emblem and, at the very least, name its wearer. Even as the logo is altered with time, the yellow backdrop traded for a grey one, the awareness persists. Yet even as people recognize Batman’s logo, one person’s impression of the superhero does not always align with another’s: a cheerful, law-abiding Batman who orders orange juice instead of alcohol at bars is Batman as he appeared in the 1960s, and a brooding hero wreathed in darkness and prone to conflicted inner monologues is the Batman of the 1980s. -

Guided through the trauma theory lens of Cathy Caruth, my analysis will consider how the female superheroic identity forms after a traumatic event.
