Prather Ohio historically hosted a patchwork of tallgrass prairies, which provided habitat for native species and prevented erosion. As these vulnerable habitats have declined in the last 200 years due to increased human land use, restorations of these ecosystems have increased, and it is important to evaluate their success. The Hemiptera (true bugs) are an abundant and varied order of insects including leafhoppers, aphids, cicadas, stink bugs, and more. They play important roles in grassland ecosystems, feeding on plant sap and providing prey to predators. Hemipteran abundance and composition can respond to grassland restorations, age of restoration, and size and isolation of habitat. -

PP Elm Seed Bug, Arocatus Melanocephalus: an Exotic Invasive
Elm seed bug, Arocatus melanocephalus: an exotic invasive pest new to the U.S. Idaho State Department of Agriculture In summer 2012, the elm seed bug (ESB), an invasive insect new to the U.S., was first identified from specimens collected in Ada and Canyon counties in Idaho. During 2013 it was found to have spread to Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, and Washington counties as well as Malheur County, Oregon. Commonly distributed in south-central Europe, ESB feeds primarily on the seeds of elm trees, although they have also been collected from oak and linden trees in Europe. The insect does not damage trees or buildings, nor does it present any threat to human health. However, due to its habit of entering houses and other buildings in large numbers to escape the summer heat and later to Adult elm seed bugs overwinter, it can be a significant nuisance to ISDA photo homeowners. Elm seed bug biology Elm seed bugs spend the winter as hibernating adults, mate during the spring and lay eggs on elm trees. Lenhard, Louisiana State University, Bugwood.org Common Name: Spined soldier bug Scientific Name: Podisus maculiventris Order and Family: Hemiptera; Pentatomidae Size and Appearance: Length (mm) Appearance Egg 1 mm Around the operculum (lid/covering) on the egg there are long projections; eggs laid in numbers of 17 -70 in oval masses; cream to black in color. Larva/Nymph 1.3 – 10 mm 1st and 2nd instars: black head and thorax; reddish abdomen; black dorsal and lateral plates. Younger instars are gregarious; cannibalistic. 3rd instar: black head and thorax; reddish abdomen with black, orange, and white bar-shaped and lateral markings 4th instar: similar to 3rd instar; wing pads noticeable 5th instar: prominent wing pads; mottled brown head and thorax; white or tan and black markings on abdomen. Adult 11 mm Spine on each shoulder; mottled brown body color; females larger than males; 2 blackish dots at the 3rd apical (tip) of each hind femur; 1-3 generations a year. Pupa (if applicable) Type of feeder (Chewing, sucking, etc.): Nymph and adult: Piercing-sucking Host/s: Spined soldier bugs are predators and feed on many species of insects including the larval stage of beetles and moths. These insects are found on many different crops including alfalfa, soybeans, and fruit. Some important pest insect larvae prey include Mexican bean beetle larvae, European corn borer, imported cabbageworm, fall armyworm, corn earworm, and Colorado potato beetle larvae. If there is not enough prey, the spined soldier bug may feed on plant juices, but this does not damage the plant. -

(Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was measured in the laboratory. Both nymphal and adult predators displayed high predation rates on eggs, nymphs and adults of the southern green stinkbug. However, developmental times of fourth instar P. maculiven- tris on eggs or nymphal instars of N. viridula were longer than on fifth instars of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), suggesting that N. viridula is suboptimal prey for the spined soldier bug. Preference experiments in which fourth instar P. maculiventris were given a choice between fourth instars of N. viridula and fifth instars of S. littoralis indicated that the stinkbugs were less vulnerable to predation than the caterpillars, mainly because of their greater agility. The potential role of P. macu- liventris in augmentation or conservation biological control of the southern green stinkbug in greenhouse and field crops is discussed. | 421 Resumen LYGAEOIDEA La superfamila Lygaeoidea (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomomorpha) es una de las mayores y más diver- sas, con más de 4000 especies, de Heteroptera. Los hábitats de las especies del grupo son variados, hay grupos arbóreos, geófilos y laminófilos. La mayoría se alimentan de semillas maduras, aunque las Blissidae y algunas Lygaeidae son succionadoras de savia, los Geocoridae son principalmente depredadoras y las Cle- radini (Rhyparochromidae) se alimentan de sangre de vertebrados. Las ninfas viven en los mismos hábitats que los adultos y se alimentan generalmente de las mismas plantas. Actualmente en los Lygaeoidea se reconocen 15 familias, de las cuales 12 han sido registradas de la región Neotropical y 11 de la Argentina: Berytidae, Blissidae, Colobathristidae, Cymidae, Geocoridae, Lygaeidae, Ninidae, Oxycarenidae, Pachygronthidae, Piesmatidae y Rhyparochromidae. Se presenta una breve historia taxonómica, aspectos filogenéticos y de la clasificación actual de la superfamilia, bibliografía de referencia y una clave para la identificación de las familias de la Argentina. Para cada familia se presenta una diagnosis, principales trabajos, aspectos de la bio- logía y la diversidad a nivel mundial y en la Argentina, así como claves para la determinación de los géneros presentes en el pais. Además, se reseña la importancia agroeconómica del grupo. Se adjunta un listado de las 154 especies citadas de Argentina. KEYWORDS: Heteroptera, Rhyparochromidae, Rhyparochromini, Raglius, Israel, New Species INTRODUCTION Raglius Stål comprises medium-sized species belonging to the Rhyparochromus com- plex which was ranked in recent works either as genus (e.g., LeQuesne, 1957) or sub- genus within the genus Rhyparochromus (e.g., Wagner, 1961; Péricart, 1998). Wagner (1961) in his monograph on the Rhyparochromus complex was the first to revise this group based on the genitalia, overall including seven species in Raglius. In his work Ra- glius was considered as a subgenus of Rhyparochromus mainly based on the type of the genitalia of R. vulgaris.Wagner (1961: 85) rejected LeQuesne (1957) idea to consider Raglius as a valid genus arguing that some characteristics represent transitional forms between Raglius and Rhyparochromus s. str. Péricart (1998: 263) based his Raglius classification on external characters and transferred three species to the subgenusRhypa - rochromus. Later in his catalogue Péricart (2001: 190) treated the Rhyparochromus complex as a genus for practical purpose, but suggested that a worldwide revision is needed. According to Péricart (2001) the Israel fauna consists of three Raglius species: R. alboacuminatus, R. confusus and R. zarudnyi. MATERIALS AND METHODS Terminology essentially follows Schuh and Slater (1995) except the following terms: Diatone is the width of the head in dorsal view across and including the eyes.
