Rogers Scholars—The Center for Rural Development’s flagship youth program—provides leadership and college scholarship opportunities to help upcoming high school juniors in Southern and Eastern Kentucky develop the skills they need to seize their potential as the region’s next generation of business and entrepreneurial leaders. During this intensive week-long program, Rogers Scholars work on building their leadership skills, participate in a series of team-building exercises; receive hands-on instructional training from professional experts in engineering, healthcare, communications, and space science; and interact with nationally recognized business leaders and entrepreneurs. Students attend camp on one of two locations - in Columbia, KY or Morehead State University in Morehead, KY.

Since the program’s inception in 1998, there have been 1,311 high school students who have graduated from Rogers Scholars, and potential scholarships valued at more than $8 million have been offered to graduates by 19 participating colleges and universities. The Rogers Explorers program is an intensive three-day, two-night program focused on cultivating skills in leadership, technology, math, science, and community service. It is developed, coordinated, and supervised by The Center for Rural Development in partnership with University of the Cumberlands, Lindsey Wilson College, Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University, , University of Pikeville, and Union College. Explorers are able to actively participate in practical college courses, fine-tune leadership skills, and develop a network of friends and resources throughout our Southern and Eastern Kentucky region.

Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute (ELI) - Apply during your 9th-11th grade years

The Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute’s purpose is to develop future business leaders and entrepreneurs in Southern and Eastern Kentucky. High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply. The program is an intensive, weeklong program focused on developing creativity, teamwork, business and leadership skills. The Institute is developed, coordinated and supervised by The Center for Rural Development and is held at The Center’s facility in Somerset, Kentucky. The concluding event will be a team business concept competition and the chance to compete for a college scholarship from Eastern Kentucky University.

NEW! Alumni Mentoring Program - Apply during your 11th and 12th grade years

The Alumni Mentoring Program is a new program offered to Rogers Scholars Alumni who wish to attend the program in a mentoring role. Students accepted into the Alumni Mentoring Program will attend the regular Rogers Scholars camp and will serve as a role model for the sophomore students in the program. The Center will select two students to spend 6 days at one of the two Rogers Scholars sessions in June 2020. Students will serve as volunteers and mentors for the camp. Responsiblities also include assisting program staff in the execution of the daily agenda and serving as a Rogers Scholars reprentative in marketing and fundraising efforts throughout the following year. All meals and lodging are provided at no cost. Hours spent in program count as community service hours.

The Center’s youth programs are offered at NO COST to students in the following counties: Adair, Bath, Bell, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Casey, Clay, Clinton, Cumberland, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Garrard, Green, Harlan, Jackson, Jessamine, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lincoln, Magoffin, Martin, McCreary, Menifee, Metcalfe, Monroe, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Rowan, Russell, Taylor, Wayne, Whitley and Wolfe.
