Overview This role reporting to the Vice-Chancellor provides strategic leadership for the in the general area concerning education which is central to the mission and new strategy of the University. Management experience at Head of Department, Associate , Dean or Pro-Vice- Chancellor level would be an advantage. Some evidence of, or evidence of the ability to, develop a broad understanding of the differing needs and modes of education across different disciplines that make up a comprehensive university, new modes of delivery and the role of transnational education, as well as the challenges currently facing undergraduate and postgraduate education are important. The ability to develop networks regionally, nationally and internationally is essential. The role would be expected to be able to leverage these networks to the benefit of Lancaster. It would be an advantage if you can also demonstrate a strong record of research and show an understanding of the importance of research in a research-led teaching environment. An understanding of the operation and challenges of education in a world top 100 university is essential.

Post: This post will be offered as a full time role, but there is room for negotiation for up to 0.2 fte to allow the post holder to continue a significant research and/or teaching presence.

Start Date and term: The post would commence 1st August 2014 for 4 years in the first instance with the possibility for renewal for a further term and would overlay a substantive appointment in an academic department.

Salary: Remuneration for this post is currently being assessed under a Hay review and the actual salary offered will be determined as part of this review. However it is anticipated that a competitive salary will be offered and include eligibility for performance related pay.

Key Challenges:  To take ownership of developing the high level strategy for education aligning it with the overarching University Strategy, with particular reference to:  embedding strategies so as ensure that the teaching modes and curriculum enable Lancaster’s educational experience to be transformational;  ensuring that our education at all levels is research stimulated;  being seen as sector leading in internationalising the student experience and for embedding employability into the curriculum;  Be the point of focus for understanding the outcomes of the National Student Survey and ensuring Lancaster continues to improve its NSS ranking;  Enhance the provision of flexible learning through enabling technologies and considers the impact on Lancaster on new educational paradigms;  Developing further the broader concept of the education experience and the engagement of the students with the University building on the Lancaster Award (with the for Student Experience, Colleges and the Library);  Develop a clear framework for the management of educational performance of Lancaster to ensure our performance in this area is as expected for a top 100 university;  Implement effective strategies for developing curricular opportunities for enterprise, skills, entrepreneurship and employability;  Take an holistic view of education at Lancaster from undergraduate through to postgraduate research;  Lead on policy formulation concerning admissions, teaching, learning and assessment;  Keep portfolio of teaching at all levels under review;  Provide advice to the DVC on admissions targets and entry requirements at all levels;  Lead applications in consultation with Faculty colleagues concerning new funding streams for education;  Ensure the needs for our overseas teaching partnerships are properly considered and integrated, as well as maximising the opportunities they provide in internationalising Lancaster’s curriculum.

Specific duties (in addition to statutory ex officio membership e.g. Court, Senate, etc.):  Membership of the VC Management Group, UMAG and UPRG  Academic Standards and Quality Committee (Chair)  Equality and Diversity (Chair)  Take lead on drafting consultations by external bodies concerning education  Various promotions and professorial pay committees  Appropriate approvals as delegated by Senate or the Vice-Chancellor

In addition the post will represent the University at external groupings concerning education and at external events. As a PVC the position will also be expected to take on other roles as determined by the Vice-Chancellor needed for the good management and benefit of the University.

Key relationships  Vice-Chancellor for line management of the role;  Chief Administrative Officer and senior members of Student Based Services, Careers, etc.;  Deputy Vice-Chancellor concerning admissions targets and entry requirements at all levels;  Provost for Student Experience, Colleges and the Library for NSS and Lancaster Award;  Line manages the Director of Quality Assurance and Enhancement;  Academic Registrar;  Deans and Associate Deans for undergraduate and postgraduate studies for the development of Faculty responses and implementation of education strategy;  PVC (International) for ensuring that the most is made of our overseas teaching partnerships;  PVCs Education (including teaching and learning) of other ;  Senior officials within key funders and regulators, e.g. HEFCE, QAA;  Head of Department for personal research (if applicable);  Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) for delivery of postgraduate research.
