We’ll bring UU women together in a setting which provides opportunities for conversation, sharing herstories, laughter and music. We’ll add nature trails, rocking chairs on screened porches, bicycles, a campfire, drumming, more laughter and conversation, to create a memora- ble experience! We’ll gather together to create and enhance our connections to one another. We’ll also enjoy good food. Special dietary concerns can be met with prior notification. Eight women will share a cottage which provides four semi-private rooms, a common area and screened porch. In addition to the cozy cottages, the Center offers two larger buildings, which, if needed, can house an additional 12 and 22. Cost will be the same as last year: $220 for a semi-private room, 6 meals, and all fees; $40 deposit now; balance February 15.     War and Pride: “Out Against the Occupation” and Queer Responses to the 2006 Lebanon War Natalie Kouri-Towe Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in Communication Studies © Natalie Kouri-Towe 2008 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I examine the role of queerness, solidarity and movement in anti-war activism relating to the 2006 Lebanon War. I investigate two events called “Out Against the Occupation” that were organized during the summer of 2006 in response to the war. These events emerged as a queer response to the context of various gay pride events held throughout the war that failed to develop an anti-war response to the war in Lebanon. These gay pride events include the Divers/Cité festival held annually in Montreal, the first World OutGames held in Montreal, the World Pride events held in Jerusalem and the Queeruption gathering held in Tel Aviv. I argue that we must rethink the role of movement, queerness and solidarity in order to understand how movements of resistance emerge. I do so by examining the role of subjectivity in how we come to move and orient ourselves towards others. Only 18% of adult Americans are smokers today, the lowest number in decades.1 The number of teenagers who are drinking and driving dropped by 54% in the past two decades.2 Young working women today make more money relative to men their age than their mothers and grandmothers did, earning 93% of the average hourly wage of men the same age.3 Adults with disabilities find a host of opportunities open to them that were unthinkable in 1990 -- today, workers with disabilities make up 19.5% of the U.S. workforce.4 And 19 states and the District of Columbia have declared same-sex marriage to be legal -- a dramatic change from just five years ago.5 While our society still faces innumerable challenges, we know that people do change -- both in attitude and behavior. Philanthropy and the independent sector that it supports are frequent drivers of these changes, through their support of and work in the education, encouragement and advocacy that helps to shift long-held practices, policies and laws. The Foundation for a Smokefree America, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the National Women's Law Center, the National Disability Rights Network -- all work for change and receive critical support from philanthropies that recognize the importance of these changes.
