HE’S A BIG-CITY KID IN A SMALL TOWN. THEY SAID HE’D NEVER WIN. HE KNEW HE HAD TO. DIRECTOR’S NOTE I love preparing for a musical during these cold Iowa months! Since it’s freezing outside, we might as well be sweating on stage! And sweat is the word for this show! Footloose is a high-energy, dance-packed, set-moving production! Once again, we will make tonight’s musical as seamless as possible—which involves singing, dancing and moving the set—simultaneously. It’s really quite a challenge for these young people—and a visual extravaganza we hope you will enjoy.

We are so excited about yet another show aligning so beautifully with the talent we have here at Iowa Central. Our leads are all highly motivated with leadership strengths, and our ensemble is a true blend of talented, hard-working, positive-attitude young people. Collaborating and creating with them and with my colleagues is not just a job—it’s a joy.

What I especially enjoy about Footloose is the blend of comedy and romance with drama and issues of faith. It also blends up-tempo dance tunes with soulful ballads. It’s the best of both worlds—and tied together with incredible music. For those unfamiliar with the story-line of this award-winning musical, here’s a brief synopsis:

Footloose is based on the 1984 hit movie that shares the story of Ren McCormick, a Chicago teen who has to trade the city for the country now that his dad has deserted him and his mom. Unfortunately, due to a tragic accident that occurred years before, the town of Bomont has banned Ren’s favorite pastimes—dancing and rock music because the incident involved drinking and driving. This law is upheld predominantly by the influence of the Reverend Shaw Moore, whose son was killed in that accident—a loss that haunts him still and hovers over his relationship with his wife (Vi) and daughter (Ariel). What follows is an attempt by Ren to stir the teens of Bomont to action—to restore dancing—and as he does so, he ultimately restores much more than that. This is a beautiful journey of forgiveness, acceptance and the restoration of joy.

So—we invite you to join us on this journey back to the 80’s—and back to dancing if you haven’t “cut loose” for awhile! We hope this production will find you dancing in the aisles as you leave tonight! Teresa Jackson
