Kenny Loggins Rocked the Hard Rock Event Center I grew up listening to Loggins and Messina. Their music touched my soul. After a meteoric rise, the singing duo split up to pursue individual careers. Today, many people know Grammy Award winner and singer, Kenny Loggins, as the king of the movie soundtrack, after scoring tracks for “Footloose,” “Caddyshack” and “Top Gun.” Tuesday night, at the Hard Rock Event Center at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Kenny Loggins and ﬁve of the coolest dudes in rock ‘n roll, gave it their all and captivated the crowd from beginning to end. Band members included: Scott Bernard – Guitars and Vocals Rick Cowling – Bass and Vocals Carl Herrgesell – Keyboards and Vocals Chris Rodriguez – Guitars and Vocals Tris Imboden – Drums Together, they helped Loggins recreate the magic that the audience traveled far and wide to experience. (the people behind us drove in from Bradenton, FL) Just so you know, Loggins still has it! The charm, the good looks and that voice! He had the audience in the palm of his hand the minute he walked on to the stage, “Don’t blame me if these guys fuck it up,” he said with a twinkle. What was truly special about the concert was Loggins’ banter before many of the songs. He reminisced about living in LA as a struggling songwriter, the inspiration for many of his songs and just being lucky. If he had ever shared these stories before, he made it sound like it was the ﬁrst time. He encouraged the audience to sing along and we happily obliged. Tears streamed down my face. When an artist can connect on this deep of a level you know it’s the real deal. Even though his age is hovering near 70, Loggins was having fun! He loves the audience and loves every minute he’s onstage. After all these years, Kenny Loggins is still having a good time. Go see him, somewhere! He’s a treasure. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JUNE 1, 2009 BOULEVARD CASINO PRESENTS LOGGINS AND MESSINA LIVE AT THE RED ROBINSON SHOW THEATRE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30 Coquitlam, BC – Over thirty-five years since Sittin’ In together, Kenny Loggins and Jimmy Messina are in the early stages of putting together a new tour that picks up where 2005’s highly successful “Sittin’ In Again” reunion tour left off. All this shared activity marks the unexpected and unlikely return of the most successful duo of the early 70’s … a group whose most enduring songs were so well crafted that they have never really gone away. At the same time, Loggins & Messina find themselves rebuilding the personal connection that was lost long ago. Though Loggins and Messina’s first Greatest Hits collection was called The Best Of Friends, both men confess that their relationship has long been a complex and sometimes difficult one. When they first met, Messina was already a well-established success story having produced and played with the legendary band, Buffalo Springfield and later with the country-rock pioneers, Poco. Loggins meanwhile was a young singer-songwriter with far less experience but with talent to burn as evidenced by early compositions like “House At Pooh Corner” and “Danny’s Song.” Then in 1971, Sittin’ In – originally envisioned as a one-off joint release intended to introduce Loggins as part of a Messina six-album production deal with Columbia Records – became a smash hit. So by public demand, this accidental duo was created and released such hits as “Your Mama Don’t Dance,” “Thinking of You,” “Angry Eyes,” “My Music” and “Watching The River Run.“ By 1977, the duo who had sold sixteen million albums and became one of rock’s most popular draws went their separate ways to pursue solo careers and it wasn’t until 2005 that they decided to reunite for a summer tour.

Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.
