Last season, leftfielder Yoenis Cespedes won the award as a Tiger — but he played the final two months of the season with the Mets. This season, four Tigers are finalists for the AL Gold Glove, as announced by Rawlings on Thursday: second baseman Ian Kinsler, shortstop Jose Iglesias, catcher James McCann and pitcher Justin Verlander. All but Kinsler — who despite outstanding defense the past three seasons has yet to win baseball’s top defensive honor — are first-time finalists. In 2015, Kinsler lost out to Houston’s Jose Altuve. In 2014, he fell to Boston’s Dustin Pedroia. Kinsler is a finalist with Pedroia — who is seeking his fifth Gold Glove — and Seattle’s Robinson Cano. Kinsler and Pedroia finished tied for the AL lead in Defensive Runs Saved by a second baseman this season with 12 each. Kinsler had a .988 fielding percentage, tying a career high set in 2014. Iglesias, considered one of the best fielding shortstops in the AL, is competing with Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor and the Angels’ Andrelton Simmons.

INTRODUCTION The period of 1994 through 2002 has been called a myriad of things by commentators, fans, baseball personnel and players when referring to this time period in baseball history. Unfortunately, not many of the names used or applied are complimentary, at least by those who are not part of the Major League Baseball (MLB) hierarchy. Names such as "Baseball's Watergate" or "Selig's Watergate,"' the "Tainted Era,"2 the "Non-Drug Testing Era," the "*ERA" or simply the "Steroids Era"3 have been suggested. Conversely, MLB commissioner Bud Selig has called this period a "renaissance" for baseball and "baseball's Golden Age." 4 As can be seen by these few examples of opinions about the subject time period, a wide gap exists in the perceptions of those who have expressed opinions on the subject.
