The hiring process requires that you complete paperwork for your appointment. The sooner you complete this paperwork the sooner you can be hired and paid, so please be sure to stop by on your first day and see Kelly Campbell, who is the department’s employment specialist and can assist you with this paperwork. The Department office is located in room 1121 of the Kraus Natural Science Building. If you are a non-U.S. citizen arriving from another country you will also need to check in with the University’s International Center and register for their orientation program. Additional information on the International Center is located on the following page. International Center If you are a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow joining us from abroad you are required to check in with the International Center at the University upon arriving in the United States. The International Center in your main resource for advising and counseling regarding any issues you may have concerning your status here and traveling. Their contact information is listed below. It generally takes a few weeks to receive a social security card so it is important that you take care of this as soon as possible after arriving in the country. The Social Security Administration is located at: 3971 Research Park Drive Ann Arbor, MI 48108 Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 A.M. – 5 P.M. The following page contains information from the International Center on what you need to bring with you when you apply for the card and directions on how get to the administration office. You should wait to apply for the social security card until after you have attended the orientation at the International Center. You will be provided with a letter from the International Center that you will need to take with you when you apply for the social security card. Benefits Information As an employee of the University you are entitled to participate in various health insurance programs. Information for the various programs can be found through the Benefits Office at http://www.umich.edu/~benefits/ You may also email or call the benefits office with any questions you may have at: 866-647-7657 (phone) 734-763-0363 (fax) [email protected] Note: Non-U.S. Citizens If you are coming from abroad and are a non-U.S. citizen you will automatically be enrolled in a health insurance program through the UM International Center due to legal requirements. For more information about the International Center health insurance policy please visit the following website: http://www.umich.edu/%7Eicenter/intlstudents/healthins/index.html Once you are hired you may elect to change your coverage to options that are available to you through the University. This may be a less costly way of securing health insurance coverage. If you do decide to elect coverage offered through your employment your enrollment through the International Center plan will automatically be canceled. Please direct all inquiries regarding your health benefits to the Benefits office or the International Center. Housing Information/Resources You have several options for housing in the Ann Arbor area. Below are a few websites that can help you in your search. It is your responsibility to find the necessary accommodations for you and your family. The University does offer on-campus family housing for those that are interested and qualify. You may request an application from the Housing office or submit a request for the application through their website (http://www.housing.umich.edu/). Your letter of offer, along with your U of M ID number, is an acceptable substitute for department submission of your application. You may work directly with the housing office as long as you have these two items. Below is a schedule of the pay dates for the year. Timekeeping arrangements for absences from work are made between you and your supervisor. A formal timesheet is not required. If you have any questions about your salary you may direct them to Kelly Campbell in the Department’s business office. If you are from abroad, and your country of permanent residence (not citizenship) has a tax treaty with our government, then you qualify for exemption from FICA taxes for the amount of years stipulated in the treaty. Most tax treaty agreements are for two years. Additional tax documents will need to be completed in order to implement the exemption and can be obtained from Kelly Campbell in the business office.
