But Grasmere is more than just a geological centre – it’s a literary one too thanks to the poetic efforts of William Wordsworth and chums, who collectively set up home in Grasmere during the late 18th century and transformed the valley into the spiritual hub of the Romantic movement. It’s not too hard to see what drew so many poets, painters and thinkers to this idyllic corner LAKE DISTRICT LAKE DISTRICT of England. Grasmere is one of the most naturally alluring of the Lakeland valleys, studded with oak woods and glittering lakes, carpeted with flower-filled meadows, and ringed by a GRASMERE & THE CENTRAL GRASMERE & THE CENTRAL stunning circlet of fells including Loughrigg, Silver Howe and the sculptured summit of Helm Crag. Wordsworth spent countless hours wandering the hills and trails around the valley, and the area is dotted with literary landmarks connected to the poet and his contemporaries, as well as boasting the nation’s foremost museum devoted to the Romantic movement. But it’s not solely a place for bookworms: Grasmere is also the gateway to the hallowed hiking valleys of Great and Little Langdale, home to some of the cut-and-dried classics of Lakeland walking as well as one of the country’s most historic hiking inns.

    In Search of Robert Lovell: Poet and Pantisocrat I. Introduction ‘At the close of the year 1794, a clever young man, of the Society of Friends, of the name of Robert Lovell, who had married a Miss Fricker, informed me that a few friends of his from Oxford and Cambridge, with himself, were about to sail to America, and, on the banks of the Susquehannah, to form a Social Colony, in which there was to be a community of property, and where all that was selfish was to be proscribed.’1 Thus wrote Bristol publisher Joseph Cottle in his Reminiscences published in 1847. As any serious student of Romanticism knows, the most important of those ‘few friends’ mentioned by Cottle were Robert Southey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who were then gathering support for a small-scale transatlantic emigration scheme founded on radical egalitarian or so-called ‘Pantisocratic’ principles. It is chiefly in connection with this utopian venture that the ‘clever young man’ described by Cottle has, until now, typically featured in Romantic criticism, very much in a supporting if not peripheral role. But how much do we know about Robert Lovell? What kind of person was he? Why did Southey, and subsequently Coleridge, embrace him enthusiastically on first acquaintance and later downgrade their estimate of his qualities? What was Lovell’s achievement as a poet, and what was his place in the early history of Romanticism in the South West? In this essay I attempt to answer these questions by re- examining established ‘facts’, gathering fresh evidence, and treating Lovell and his poetry as valid subjects in their own right rather than as a footnote to the budding careers of Coleridge and Southey.

    1 BYRON’S POEMS ABOUT POETS Some of the funniest of Byron’s poems spring with seeming spontaneity from his pen in the middle of his letters. Much of this section comes from correspondence, though there is some formal verse. Several pieces are parodies, some one-off squibs, some full-length. Byron’s distaste for most of the poets of his day shines through, with the recurrent and well-worn traditional joke that their books will end either as stuffing in hatshops, wrapped around pastries, or as toilet-tissue. Byron admired the English poets of the past – the Augustans especially – much more than he did any of his contemporaries. Of “the Romantic Movement” he knew no more than did any of the other writers supposed now to have been members of it. Southey he loathed, as a dreadful doppelgänger – see below. Of Wordsworth he also had a low opinion, based largely on The Excursion – to the ambitions of which Don Juan can be regarded as a riposte (there are as many negative comments about Wordsworth in Don Juan as there are about Southey). He was as abusive of Keats as it’s possible to be, and only relented (as he said), when Shelley showed him Hyperion. Of the poetry of his friend Shelley he was very guarded indeed, and compensated by defending Shelley’s moral reputation. Blake he seems not to have known (“Blake” was him the name of a well-known Fleet Street barber). The only poet of whom his judgement and modern estimate coincide is Coleridge: he was strong in his admiration for The Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan, and Christabel; about the conversational poems he seems blank, and he feigns total incomprehension of the Biographia Literaria (see below).

    ` Lakes Big Swims Trip Notes TRIP OVERVIEW The Lake District is home to over 80 lakes, meres, waters, and tarns making it a great location for open water swimming. On this short escape, we offer the opportunity to do some longer swims on what we think are four of the best lakes in the area. The days are packed as we swim the entire length of Derwent Water and Wast Water and swim across Grasmere and Ullswater. This trip is a fabulous opportunity to spend a few days not only exploring the different areas of the Lake District from a swimming perspective, but also experiencing the uniqueness of each lake. Swimmers will be escorted by experienced swim guides and qualified canoeists during all swims. Our accommodation is located on the shores of the water at Grasmere, right across the road from Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage. WHO IS THIS TRIP FOR? This trip is a combination of lake length swims as well as some long width crossings. Most swims are between 4-5kms, so the trip is best suited to those who fancy these types of distances. Although challenging, these swims are some of the most spectacular anywhere in the Lakes. LOCATION SUMMARIES Wast Water Wast Water is perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all the lakes and the deepest in England. Surrounded by the mountains of Red Pike, Kirk Fell and Great Gable, the peak of Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain is our target as swim the length of this Water. Derwent Water Derwent Water is fed by the River Derwent with a catchment area in the high fells surrounded to its west rise by the fells of Cat Bells and to its east, the fantastic viewpoint of Friar's Crag, jutting into the lake.

Edited by Agustín Coletes Blanco and Alicia Laspra Rodríguez, Libertad frente a tiranía: poesía inglesa de la Guerra de la Independencia (1808-1814) makes a noble defence for the poetry published during this period: «Poesía, porque se trata de un género literario que implica inmediatez y fuerza expresiva en la respuesta y, por tanto, en la mediación entre el autor y el público» (25). Such expressiveness is a feature not only of the English poems chosen for inclusion, but of the editors’ own sensitively considered translations. Libertad Frente a Tiranía is an anthology divided into three parts. Part 1 offers a comprehensive selection of the Spanish- themed war poems written by authors such as Wordsworth, Byron, Scott, and Southey, now considered canonical («los poetas consagrados»); the second focuses on poets who enjoyed contemporary celebrity («los autores relevantes en su época»); while Part 3 is devoted to the largely anonymous (or at least pseudonymous) publications that appeared in contemporary British newspapers and periodicals («poesía publicada en prensa»). Pantisocracy Sam Coleridge and Bob Southey conceived of Pantisocracy in 1794 just five years after the beautiful tearing down of the Bastille twelve couples would found an intentional community on the Susquehanna River which flows from upstate New York ambling for hundreds of miles down thru Pennsylvania & emptying into the Chesapeake Bay The plan was to work maybe 2-3 hours a day with sharing of chores Each couple had to come up with 125 pounds So Southey & Coleridge strove to earn their shares through writing C. wrote to Southey 9-1-94 2 that Joseph Priestly might join the Pantisocrats in America The scientist-philosopher had set up a “Constitution Society” to advocate reform of Parliament inaugurated on Bastille Day 1791 Then “urged on by local Tories” a mob attacked & burned Priestly’s books, manuscripts laboratory & home so that he ultimately fled to the USA. 3. Worry-Scurry for Expenses In Coleridge from his earliest days worry-scurry for expenses relying on say a play about Robespierre writ w/ Southey in ’94 (around the time Robe’ was guillotined) to pay for their share of Pantisocracy on the Susquehanna & thereafter always reliant on Angels & the G. of S. Generosity of Supporters & brilliance of mouth all the way thru the hoary hundreds 3 4.
