He and his sister Grace combined ingenuity with hard work in a variety of odd jobs, including starting a street baking business, to help their mother provide for their large family. The Moody clan returned to Boston some time after Charles's death, because Mary-Emma, Ralph's mother, was served a subpoena but did not want to appear in court against a man she believed to be innocent. Ralph, however, had difficulty readjusting. Following more than two times that he got his name in the local "bad boy book," most of which were false charges, he left the family home in Boston to live on his grandfather, Thomas Gould's farm in Lisbon Falls, Maine which is covered in the 1953 book, The Fields of Home . Thomas Gould died in 1929. Ralph Moody's later books cover his subsequent travels through Arizona, New Mexico, Nebraska, and Kansas. He traveled west intending to end up in Littleton, Colorado before he succumbed to a diagnosed illness, diabetes. During this time, the books cover his experiences in the desert southwest and mid western US including stints as a bust sculptor, a horse rider doing "horse falls" for motion pictures, and a farm hand - turned owner – as he worked his way back toward Colorado while continuing to support his family financially. After four years of the roving life, he continued to remain in good health and decided the prognosis for his illness was wrong.

When that first Shaking the Nickel Bush opened the story, I worried that the critics had been right. I am not going to lie, in some Shaking the Nickel Bush they were absolutely spot on. There is no easy way to say Shaking the Nickel Bush, but in this book, Ralph seems to break our hearts in a million little ways. That said, I do not think that that adequately describes the story. I do not think that this book would exist in this series if it did not have some redemptive value. There is no question that this book is challenging fare for young readers, but it is not inherently a bad book. A classic coming-of-age story, it may be the most interesting of all of the Little Britches books. At the end of Fields of Homewe are left with the impression that Ralph is going to go permanently into farming with his grandfather. When this book opens, several years have passed and no mention is made of his grandfather. This disconcerting change of events has caused many of Shaking the Nickel Bush Ralph Moody fans to wonder, to speculate, to theorize, and to do what little research we could.

The first 25 years of this newsletter were edited by Leo E. Oliva. Dr. Oliva, from Woodston, Kansas, was responsible for not only editing this newsletter but for encouraging the placement of material into the newsletter. He and his wife Bonita made numerous research trips – to visit either people or institutions – that have resulted in trail-related articles, diaries, reminiscences, etc. During this 25-year period, he wrote a large number of the book reviews that have appeared in Wagon Tracks. In addition, he also wrote a number of historical articles in the newsletter, plus prefatory comments for numerous additional contributions. More than any single individual, he was responsible for the growth and success of Wagon Tracks, both as a way for SFTA members to keep up with organizational changes and as a periodical dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Santa Fe Trail-related history. Since 2011, this periodically has been admirably edited by Leo’s successor, Ruth Friesen of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This compilation will not please everybody. Its primary focus is the indexing of historical information about the trail. Therefore, it lists all research articles that detail the trail’s history (including diaries and trail reminiscences), and it also records information (often from the “Council Trove” section of the newsletter) from contemporary newspaper articles describing life and incidents along the trail.

The Slave South In The Far West: California, The Pacific, And Proslavery Visions Of Empire Abstract This dissertation rests on a relatively simple premise: America’s road to disunion ran west, and unless we account for the transcontinental and trans-Pacific ambitions of slaveholders, our understanding of the nation’s bloodiest conflict will emainr incomplete. Whereas a number of important works have explored southern imperialism within the Atlantic Basin, surprisingly little has been written on the far western dimension of proslavery expansion. My work traces two interrelated initiatives – the southern campaign for a transcontinental railroad and the extension of a proslavery political order across the Far Southwest – in order to situate the struggle over slavery in a continental framework. Beginning in the 1840s and continuing to the eve of the Civil War, southern expansionists pushed tirelessly for a railway that would run from slave country all the way to California. What one railroad booster called “the great slavery road” promised to draw the Far West and the slaveholding South into a political and commercial embrace, while simultaneously providing the plantation economy with direct access to the Pacific trade.
