Pearls and Organic Gemstones INTRODUCTION Pearls were probably the first discovered gems of significance. Because they need no cutting or treatment to enhance their beauty and are rare natural occurrences, they have most likely always been highly esteemed. Organic gemstones are anything created by living processes. We have looked at amber in the past, but bone, teeth (such as ivory), and shells all have some value and are used today as gemstones. Pearls in General A pearl is grown by a mollusk (a bivalve such as a clam, oyster, or mussel or snail [single shell = valve]) in response to an irritant. Bivalves (two shelled mollusks) that secrete pearls live in both fresh‐ and saltwater. The irritant in most cases is a parasite (though it could be a grain of sand or other object). The parasite, a worm or other creature, is walled off by a secretion of calcium carbonate and protein. The calcium carbonate is the same as the inorganic material that makes stalactites in caves, and the protein is called conchiolin. The combination of these two substances (calcium carbonate and protein) makes the pearl's nacre (Nacre is also called mother of pearl). The nacre is a lustrous deposit around the irritant and forms concentric layers (overlapping circles). Many concentric layers of nacre build up over a period of a few years creating a pearl. The internal pattern is much like that seen in a jawbreaker. The layers create a sheen or luster that has iridescence and is described as both pearly luster and if colors of the rainbow are present, the pearl's orient. -

July Quarterly Newsletter August from Mind Body & Spirit September Hi Everyone! I wanted to embrace this moment, as we should embrace every moment, to talk about time and gifts. There is not a day that goes by when we don’t hear someone say “I wish I had more time” or “Time goes by so fast”, or “There isn’t enough time!”. I love that last one. Just how much time would be enough time? If we had 6 more hours in the day, would we work more. Would we fill it to overflowing with more errands? Or would we live during that time as if there were no more time, or would we still be complaining that we didn’t have enough time in the day? Instead of saying; “Oh, if I had just a couple more hours of time I would use it wisely. I would spend that precious time with my kids, or I would be painting, playing, reading, writing to friends, writing a book, watching the sun set, or maybe rest!” Instead of dreaming of that extra time that we don’t ever seem to “find”, let’s try not thinking about next year’s vacation, next week’s test or presentation, tomorrow’s anticipations or worries, and think about this moment, right now! RIGHT NOW IS ALL THERE IS. Tomorrow never comes but Right Now is here, right in front of you. Embrace it! Don’t lose it because you don’t see it! I believe that the reason we can’t seem to find enough time and it is racing ahead of us is that we are racing ahead of it! There is plenty of time, we have just speeded up so much that we are doing our next week today and before you know it the week is gone! Do you know why, when we “get” time that we didn’t expect, as when some- thing is canceled, etc., we have the best of times, or get the best rest, or maybe don’t know what to do with it and our bodies relax? It’s because we are in the present moment and we haven’t had the chance to plan something for that moment. -

GIT GEMSTONE UPDATE Preliminary Investigation of Purple Garnet from a New Deposit in Mozambique By GIT-Gem testing laboratory 11 May 2016 Introduction In March 2016, a group of Thai gem dealer led by Mr. Pichit Nilprapaporn paid a visit to the GIT and informed us about a new garnet deposit in Mozambique, that was discovered near the western border with Zimbabwe. They also displayed a large parcel of rough and a few cut stones claimed to be the material found in this new deposit (Figure 1). According to the stone’s owner, these garnet specimens were unearthed from an unconsolidated sediment layer, just a few meters below ground surface. This brief report is our preliminary investigation on the interesting vivid purple garnet from the new deposit in Mozambique. It still delivers scientific surprises, as exemplified by a 7 recent paper in American Mineralogist that re-interprets the origin of needle-like rutile inclusions that form “silk” in sapphires. 8 Understanding of variations in sapphire genesis continues to expand. Keywords: Sapphire, inclusions, trace elements, genesis 9 Sapphire as a gem variety of corundum has wide use in the gem trade as one of the more historically valuable colored gem stones 10 (CGS) and is mined from a great variety of continental gem deposits across the world. A masterly compendium on this gemstone and its 11 ramifications is recently available (Hughes 2017). As a gem, sapphire ranges through all the colors of corundum, except where 12 sufficient Cr enters its α-alumina crystal structure and causes the red color of the variety ruby. Sapphire, as a key pillar in a wide 13 economic network of gem enhancing treatments, jewelry and other manufacturing enterprises, has elicited numerous scientific and 14 gemological enquiries into its internal nature and natural genesis and subsequent treatments. A further use of sapphire as a synthetic 15 material with a great variety of purposes also has triggered a proliferation of detailed studies on its growth, properties and other element 16 substitutional effects (Dobrovinski et al. 2009). Even with this vast range of studies, this apparently simple gemstone still yields 17 controversies and breakthroughs in understanding its genetic formation. -
