Introduction to Ryedale Special Families

Ryedale Special Families is a parent led support group and Charitable Incorporated Organ- isation.

Our objectives are;

“The relief of children, young people and young adults with disabilities, additional needs and illness, their families and/or carers, in Ryedale, , in particular, but not exclusively, by the provision of information, advice and support service.”

In 1997, 26 families were in contact with Ryedale Special Families. From that time to pre- sent, RSF has supported 530 families. At the end of March 2019 there were 245 families who we support regularly with 36 new families coming to us during the year.

Chairman’s Report

RSF has always worked in partnership with other organisations. This year it has particu- larly concentrated on developing close relationships with other organisations which sup- port adults with disabilities to help smooth transitions when young people reach the RSF upper age limit. This is a difficult time for all young people with additional needs. They need to find a way of spending their time in a fulfilling and useful way. They may also begin to live away from their family.

One of the partnerships that RSF has been developing is with Botton Village. This is an entire village that is managed by the Camphill Village Trust, a national charity, near Dan- by on the North Moors. There is provision for people with learning disabilities to live and work in the village where they have farms, a bakery, a creamery, a food production unit and other workshops. RSF has been taking groups of young people up to Botton to take part in in the gardening, bakery, and woodwork workshops. The staff at Botton have told me that they are very impressed with the RSF staff who come up for these days. It is a very local and quite unique provision that RSF is starting to use for our young people and also to inform parents of the opportunities that exist there.

Another great local partner is Walled Garden. Several young people are work- ing there on a regular basis with RSF support and also with support (for the actual gar- dening bit) from Walled Garden volunteers.

Another initiative that RSF has started for young adults is the shopping service. This is something that The Croft in Malton (another Camphill Village Trust community) began and which RSF is developing in areas that The Croft does not service. It is a great thing – people who need their shopping done give a list to the young people who then do their shopping for them. This is a really positive voluntary service for our young people to do - for once they are the ones helping others rather than being helped them- selves.

Other partnerships are with Rural Arts and NYCC to provide FUSE drama sessions and with Welburn Hall School so that young people there can access the RSF Youth Group.

RSF does not want the young people they have helped throughout their lives to be left with no further support once they are too old for RSF. Developing these partner- ships is providing activities and even possi- ble avenues to future living opportunities for our young people.

Family Activities

These form a vital part of our service. - they are a way of enjoying leisure time together - they connect people with other families - RSF provide activities free or at a subsidised rate - We aim to provide transport where possible

This year our 72 family activities have been attended by 71 families, activities included;

- The new Inflatanation at Beverley - Ice Skating in Hull - A day out at the Peat Rigg Activity Centre in Cropton Forest - A train trip on the Railway - Family craft sessions at Dalby Forest and Danby Moors Centre

Families enjoy the sunshine at Dalby Forest Support for Parents

As a parent led group we provide support to parents covering a wide range of subjects. During the year inclusive education, DLA & PIP applications and support for housing have been some of the issues we have helped parents with.

This year we have attended education review meetings, care support meetings and Team Around the Child meetings. We have helped families with benefit assessments and finding grants for essential equipment that is not covered by the statutory services.

Parent and young people’s views are represented across North Yorkshire at meetings with North Yorkshire County Council and parent forums.

The Family Support Group met regularly where parents support other parents, emotionally and practically, they have also arranged regular days out for parents.

The RAFT support group met regularly for parents and carers of children with autism.

Flexible Care Service

RSF provide experienced workers to support children and young people on a one-to-one ba- sis. This support tends to be 2 to 4 hours, but we are flexible and are now doing longer ses- sions and occasional overnight support. We can support in the home, in the community, at RSF social groups and at other social groups to help integration. Support is also provided for young adults. The work is person centred and planned with the family.

Our flexible care service; - gives families a break from caring - gives children and young people access to positive activities - gives children and young people independ- ence skills and builds their social skills

This support is provided through North Yorkshire County Council assessment and direct payments. This year we sup- ported 53 children, young people & young adults.

We are a registered provider for North Yorkshire County Council and are registered to provide care by the Care Quality Commission. The Care Quality Commission inspects our ser- vice annually by talking to staff, par- ents and young people about the care provided. The latest report is availa- ble on our website http:// www.ryedalespecialfamilies.org.uk/ what-we-do/respite-care/

Social Groups

RSF run a number of social groups for children, young people and young adults with addi- tional needs and disabilities. We are also involved with other groups providing mainstream support.

We do this to; - Give children and young adults independence from their families - Provide fun and accessible activities - Give opportunities to make new friends and spend time with old friends - Build social skills, practical skills and self esteem

Our groups cover a wide age range, 5 years to 25 years and cater for all tastes. Activities this year have included hydrotherapy, accessible cycling, Wetwheels accessible speed boat, cooking classes and visits to North Bay Railway, Castle Howard, Henshaws and the hydro- therapy pool at Winifred Holtby in Hull.

Our Junior Club is for younger members aged between 8 and 12 years. 39 children have attended this year enjoying bowling, woodland activities and swimming.

Our Youth Group is for people aged 13 to 17. It meets weekly at a youth centre in Pickering and has longer sessions during the holidays. There are 55 young people who attend, it is an informal, fun setting with activities there for those who want to be involved.

Our Over 18s groups include a weekly cook class, monthly skills sessions and leisure activi- ties, including meals out at the young people’s favourite pubs. 32 young people have attended this year.

Our holiday sessions cater for all ages over the school summer holidays, with 5-hour fun sessions to places in Ryedale and beyond. This year they were attended by 125 people.

What people say about RSF

Young person RSF helped me enormously and opened me up to opportuni- ties I wouldn’t have been able to have if this charity wasn’t available. It has also made me realise that I would like to be able to care for people. My confidence has grown massively.

Parents The sessions (cook classes) have been hugely beneficial for my daughter and came at a point in her life when there were very few positives and her confidence in herself was a rock bottom. My daughter has come our all the richer for it, she has blossomed so much in her short time with RSF

My daughter is doing a fundraiser for RSF, it is her way of saying thank you to all the people that have helped her over the years and allowed her to lead a normal life without being judged.

I just want to say that watching (support worker) with my son showed just how much trust he has in her and she was brilliant with him - they have a special bond and it was obvious.

Thank you for all your support over the summer holidays. My daughter has enjoyed her trips out with you and without your support she wouldn’t have been able to meet up with her friends.

Staff and Volunteers Thank you for the great Team Teach training. Delivery really focussed on the young people with which we are working, making it seem very applicable.

A massive thank you to you all, I have enjoyed every session I have worked and will miss everyone. I have learnt so much and will treasure the memories.

Other Organisations It was a great privilege to spend some quality time with you all. I must say that your team was great to work with and you should all be commended for your patience and care, it was inspiring.
