Socrates Introduction — Our genetic strain parted company with our chimpanzee cous- ins about seven million years ago, probably because it embarrassed us to see them scooting about on all four legs. We then embarked on a multimillion-year experiment of add- ing brain cells to our cerebrum. By the time we achieved certification as Homo sapiens we had added more than two pounds of gray matter atop our perfectly adequate chimpanzee brain. That point was reached about a hundred and twenty thousand years ago, give or take. Since that time we have developed symbolic languages that very few of us ever master, abstract thought that is used mostly for considering problems that nobody really cares about, methods of food production that result in enormous surpluses that are fed to automobiles rather than to the billions of humans who are perpetu- ally hungry, and weapons that are capable of blowing us all to kingdom come in the blink of an eye. Legs, shouts. The scrape and snap of Keds on loose alley pebbles seems to catapult their voices high into the moist March air blue above the wires. Rabbit Angstrom, coming up the alley in a business suit, stops and watches, though he's twenty-six and six three. So tall, he seems an unlikely rabbit, but the breadth of white face, the pallor of his blue irises, and a nervous flutter under his brief nose as he stabs a cigarette into his mouth partially explain the nickname, which was given to him when he too was a boy. He stands there thinking, the kids keep coming, they keep crowding you up. His standing there makes the real boys feel strange. Eyeballs slide. They're doing this for themselves, not as a show for some adult walking around town in a double-breasted cocoa suit. It seems funny to them, an adult walking up the alley at all. Where's his car? The cigarette makes it more sinister still. Is this one of those going to offer them cigarettes or money to go out in back of the ice plant with him? They've heard of such things but are not too frightened; there are six of them and one of him. The ball, rocketing off the crotch of the rim, leaps over the heads of the six and lands at the feet of the one.

Eternal Return A play written after Bulgakov by Timothy N Kopacz A senior project to fulfill part of the requirements of the Honors Program of Boston College. Abstract: The objective of this project was to attempt not only to adapt the novel The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov to the stage, but rather to translate it in both time and place to the stage. It has been more than 60 years since the novel was written, and as such the concerns of the characters have changed both in time and locale. Not only are their objectives adjusted, but the novel is ultimately that: a novel. Being a theatrical adaptation, the play must acknowledge its own existence as such and take issue with its form as much as The Master and Margarita does its own. The play is, ultimately, a failed one in my opinion. The greatest downfall thereof being the fact that theatre, drama, is centered around a single thing: conflict. The devil can be in conflict with no one but the divine, and as such any time he is on stage there is simply something missing. This failure is, to a certain extent, befitting of the piece for what it takes to heart as its issues. Enjoy.
