The Watchmen - comprised of the Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl II, Ozymandias, Rorschach and Silk Spectre II - are a disparate band of masked superheroes, modeled after the Minutemen, who were masked superheroes of a generation earlier, most of who are dead or afflicted by the ravages of life. The Comedian belongs to both groups. Despite the activities of the Watchmen leading to the west winning the Vietnam War which The Watchman turn has kept Richard Nixon in the White House, Nixon has now outlawed masks, resulting in The Watchman Watchmen disbanding and going into retirement, most hiding their Watchmen past under their human identities. However, the Comedian, in his human persona of Eddie Blake, and Dr. Manhattan - former physicist Jon Osterman who obtained his superhero powers through a scientific accident which almost killed him - now work for the government. Manhattan's powers in particular have kept a watch over nuclear proliferation, as he is able to stop Written by Huggo. Let's get this out of the way - Watchmen the movie is not as good as the graphic novel. Zack The Watchman Watchmen is not your average graphic novel adaptation. Unlike withwhich was short and sharp and shallow and easy to adapt, the original Watchmen is The Watchman dense The Watchman, as written, unfilmable. So Snyder did something very smart - he didn't even try. What he did instead The Watchman to take the world of Watchmen and rebuild it in a way which made a virtue of this new medium film rather than try to cram the graphic novel into a cinematic form. Nowhere is this approach more obvious than in the film's title sequence. A wonderfully composed collage of images depicts scenes from the universe of Watchmen in a way which is only possible in the movies. In this way, we are subconsciously introduced to a world where costumed heroes are a part of everyday culture and brought, in a stylish and fluid way, from the original days of the Minutemen to those of the Watchmen. This introduction is cinematically perfect and is indicative of the heights which the Watchmen movie is perfectly capable of achieving but not quite capable of sustaining. Watchen is a brave film for a major studio to make and without a doubt it would not exist in its present form without the success of It is incredibly dark both in tone as well as shooting style with The Watchman that would be anathema to any other superhero story. The less you know about the story, the better so there will be no spoilers here but suffice to say Watchmen's version of a happy ending is a far cry from the Hollywood norm. Snyders brings his unique approach to action to bear on Watchmen, expanding on The Watchman action scenes in the comic without making it feel too redundant. His efforts are ably supported by the incredibly game cast, excellent The Watchman and near perfect visual effects - this film is incredible to look at but also manages to create an entire world in a way which most superhero stories never do. The attention to detail in even The Watchman smallest scenes is commendable and the dense flashback structure means the same attention is paid to the presentation of full and complex characters. Snyder has made a film which is gorgeous to look at, agreeably violent, well written, wonderfully designed and features some of the best small scale action sequences ever committed to celluloid. But, naturally, not everything is perfect. Most of the performances are excellent, with a cast of relative unknowns who manage to distinguish The Watchman despite constantly competing with overbearing effects and design. Patrick Wilson, in particular, does great work with a difficult role as Nite Owl, while Jackie Earle Hayley is blistering as Rorschach. Unfortunately in a film which could have done with a strong female presence, neither Carla Gugino nor Malin Ackerman make much of an impression, despite having quite a lot of screen time. Synder's musical cues are another bone of contention - often pushing the tone of the film into the realm of parody. And the ending On a related note, neither of the stories major revelations are handled that well. These moments were genuinely shocking in the graphic novel but are almost glossed over in the film. Don't get the wrong impression, Watchmen is a good film, sometimes a great film. Snyder has managed to make a movie which is a terrifically well balanced compromise between accessibility and fidelity. That anyone can sit down The Watchman the cinema and experience a distillation of the Watchmen universe in just minutes is a marvel. It does not deliver the depth The Watchman feeling and connection of the novel but that is more a matter of the differences in the media than a failure on the part of the film. On its own merits, Zack Synder's Watchmen is a dark and twisted tale peopled The Watchman complex characters whose motivations are not obvious even to themselves. It is a solid film, sometimes rising into the extraordinary, and deserves to be successful. This is The Watchman Alan Moore's Watchmen but it is a competent extension of the universe into The Watchman medium and a worthy cinema-going experience. Looking for some great streaming picks?     True Detective provides talented acting and exciting plot HBO’s True Detective has been one of the best shows to come to television in recent years. With its riveting action sequences, sizzling erotic scenes, and amazing cast, this program, directed by Cary Fukanaga, truly provides audiences with gripping television. Set in the mid-1990s and filmed in Louisiana, detectives Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rustin “Rust” Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) are on the trail of a ritual-obsessed serial killer who adorns his victims’ bodies with antlers and other symbols. Told mostly through flashbacks, the show cuts to scenes of the detectives being interviewed in present day, with hints at their possible corruption. The excitement of the program comes with the transition between seasons, with each season having a completely new story and cast. This format ensures that the viewer is never left with a cliffhanger, as all the questions have to be answered by the last episode of each season. For me, actors have done their job when they are completely absorbed in their part and the audience no longer sees an actor, but only a character. McConaughey and Harrelson achieve this feat and truly bring these characters off the screen and into our living rooms. However, where these actors really excel is their power to tell a story. Now, one might think that storytelling comes from the writer, but the detectives’ use of facial expressions, along with slight mannerisms to get their intended message across, certainly brings the show to a whole new level. However, the area in which this series is lacking is where so many other great shows today excel—the presence of strong female characters.

In the years that have followed the network has positioned itself as vanguard in the television landscape, however, HBO drama series have remained a complicated, and often dangerous site for female characters. Rushing Professor Frank Grady,Department of English, University of Missouri, Saint Louis ii ABSTRACT Since 2000, the comic-book superhero blockbuster has become Hollywood’s most salient genre. “Heroes, Incorporated: A Political Economy of the Superhero Blockbuster” examines these seemingly reactionary fantasies of American power, analyzing their role in transmedia storytelling for a conglomerated and world-spanning entertainment industry. This dissertation argues that for all their apparent investment in the status quo and the hegemony of white men, superhero blockbusters actually reveal the disruptive and inhuman logic of capital, which drives both technological and cultural change. Although focused on the superhero film from 2000 to 2015, this project also considers the print and electronic media across which conglomerates extend their franchises. It thereby contributes to the materialist study of popular culture and transmedia adaptation, showing how 21st century Hollywood adapts old media for new platforms, technologies, and audiences. The first chapter traces the ideology of these films to their commercial roots, arguing that screen superheroes function as allegories of intellectual property. The hero’s “brand” identity signifies stability, even as the character’s corporate owners continually revise him (rarely her).

Local T mayors’, state governors’, and district attorneys’ offices, city and county police, and sheriff’s departments commit and cover up violent crimes. These offices and departments comprise mostly mid- dle-aged white men. Masculinist desires for power and domination manifest as interpersonal ends and contact points between the indi- vidual and the state. The state here is a mutable system, both abstract and concrete. It encompasses the functions of the legal and political offices whose corruption is taken for granted in their shady rela- tions to criminal networks, commercial enterprises, and religious institutions. There is nothing particularly novel about this vision of the state. Masculinist violence and institutional corruption further damage vic- tims in the system (typically women, children, and disempowered and disenfranchised others, like migrant workers) who need a hero to solve the crimes committed against them—these tropes are staples of detective fiction, film noir, and many television crime procedurals. What then explains the popular and critical success of True Detective?
