These things happen to Proud to you when your parents work in theatre. It’s hardly the worst thing, but it can be a bore if Support you’re 7 years old and would rather be on a soccer field. But that afternoon, Jasper and I Berkeley Rep were equally captivated by this ridiculously talented ensemble of young men, and a story told with music and puppets full of rough magic, ease and charm, humor, and vast imagination. It was The Old Man and The Old Moon, and my first introduction to PigPen Theatre Co. Personal attention So I was thrilled to learn last year that PigPen was working thoughtfulEMG litigation with Universal and the director Marc Bruni, bringing their unique final resolution perspective and rangy set of skills to the creation of a theatrical version of The Tale of Despereaux. The combination of this delightful Our goal is to preserve our LAW FAMILY piece of literature with the inherent cool of an indie band— sounds client’s dignity and humanity. like Berkeley to me! In addition to the delight of having a piece of theatre that we can share with our families over the holidays, in these times I especially love the fact that Despereaux tells the story of an FA M I LYLAW G R OUP, P. I think that’s above CONNECT my paygrade, but together with the fantastic writer/performers of PigPen, their wonderful castmates, the brilliant Marc Bruni, the amazing design team, and the extraordinary staff here at Berkeley Rep, we can help to create a world in which people are brought together as a community, in the presence of a story that will inspire them to marshal their resources, embrace the things that make them different, and make their kingdoms safe. It was Oklahoma at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. And what stands out with such power in my mind Perform is the color! Who knows any longer what color those rows of corn really were. But in my mind, they were greener than green could possibly be. They were more real than real could be. They embodied everything that I still love about the theatre, that heightened sense of reality that both grounds you in the real world ances while taking you always, ever so slightly, outside of the real. There is the pretense of realism that acknowledges the artificiality of perfor- mance. It coexists with my willing suspension of disbelief. I think kids have an innate understanding of the rules of performance. When they play they automatically operate by the same rules. Artificiality coexists with absolute belief in the reality of the moment. There is no contra- diction.

  • Yellowman This Hard-Hitting 2002 Pulitzer Finalist Looks at the Subject of Racism Within the Black Community and the Obstacles It Raises for Women and Men of Color
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Alert for Theatre Editors, Reviewers and Calendar Listings Chance Theater presents the Orange County premiere of Yellowman This hard-hitting 2002 Pulitzer Finalist looks at the subject of racism within the black community and the obstacles it raises for women and men of color. January 7, 2020 Anaheim, California Chance Theater, Anaheim’s official resident theater company, presents the … … Orange County premiere of Yellowman, an exquisite and provocative exploration of racism within the Black community. A celebration of language and the human spirit, Yellowman is a multi-character memory play about Alma, an African-American woman who dreams of life beyond the confines of her small town Southern upbringing, and Eugene, the light-skinned black man whose fate is tragically intertwined with hers. Directed by Oanh Nguyen, Yellowman previews April 24 through May 1, 2020, with regular performances running May 2 to May 24 on the Fyda-Mar Stage at the Bette Aitken theater arts Center. Playwright Dael Orlandersmith’s drama looks at the lives of lifelong friends Alma and Eugene, whose different skin colors raise obstacles that become insurmountable when their friendship turns to love. Are we on the inside what we appear to be on the outside? Are we ultimately victims of the biases and prejudices of our parents, and our community, no matter what color our skin? “A landmark in theater history Enthralling Mind-altering.” -- The New York Times … … “Both a celebration of young love and a harrowing study of smoldering domestic violence, the play is both heartwarming and ultimately heartbreaking.” – Variety “It’s a play worth standing for.” – Star-Ledger “This is a wonderful play.” – CurtainUp “One of the most gripping, instructive, transforming hours in contemporary theater.” -- The Times (Trenton, NJ) One of the most intriguing aspects of Orlandersmith’s script is that the play only features two actors who portray all of the story’s characters, often switching between characters within the same scenes.

Ideas matter. Stories matter. YOU, the audience, matters. Your passion for contemporary theater plays a vital and necessary role in producing new work. Now, more than ever, the power of stories and live theater create a deeper appreciation and understanding of the human experience. An experience that is intrinsically beautiful, elegant, turbulent, and messy. We are driven by bold works of art. New work that is bold enough to reflect our present culture back to us. New works produced without a safety net of tradition. These six plays will inspire you, stimulate your imagination, open your minds, and entertain you. Our 2019 playwrights — Deborah Brevoort, Joseph Dougherty, Ellen Fairey, Greg Kalleres, Dael Orlandersmith, Antonio Edwards Suarez, and Michael Weller — use the power of their words to introduce you to new ideas and diverse stories that will challenge, provoke, and ED HERENDEEN fascinate you. “ Now more than ever, we need our myths, our fables, our gods, MISSION and demons. • Black Theatre Insights
Black History Month & Theatre Insights 1 Purpose: As a way to acknowledge, highlight, celebrate, uplift, and honor the past and present Black theatre artists who have contributed so much to our theatre canon, I thought it would be worthwhile in creating daily emails to be sent throughout the month of February which consisted of a fact, artist, and play of the day. These daily emails culminated in a Black History Month Play Exchange on February 27th, as an event and space for folks to come together to give and share presentations on their chosen play from the list of plays sent out over the course of the month. It is my hope that we take the spirit of widening our knowledge of our theatre history and work towards making known the contributions of all the marginalized groups who have been critical in cementing the foundation of the theatre we all enjoy today. Acknowledgments: Thank you to Adarian Sneed for helping me create this idea during those late zoom calls on those cold, lonely winter break nights where we just laughed, existed, and bolstered one another’s creative thoughts. Thank you to the Anthony Aston Players for allowing me the space to use your listserv as a way to spread this knowledge and history. Thank you to Leslie Spencer and Sierra Browning for helping contribute some of the artist spotlights. I am forever grateful to all the kind emails I received from folks in support of this project as it truly made these emails an important part of my daily routine.

Orlandersmith often acts in her plays as well, delivering critically acclaimed portrayals of lives torn apart by poverty, racism, or substance abuse. Commenting on the sometimes desolate emotional territory that her stories traverse, the New York-based writer reflected in an interview with Stuart Miller for American Theatre that “there is humanity within a bleak story. We find that humanity by exposing the darkness. I use language as a tool. Just the fact that the story itself is told—and hopefully well—is cause for hope.” Orlandersmith was born in 1959 and grew up in public housing in New York’s rough East Harlem neighborhood.

Festival Forty-Three & New West Drama Conference February 14-18, 2011 Humboldt State University Arcata, CA The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education; Dr. Gerald and Paula McNichols Foundation; The Honorable Stuart Bernstein and Wilma E. Bernstein; the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund; and the National Committee for the Performing Arts. It is a pleasure for Humboldt to host the Region VII Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Humboldt State (HSU) is nearing its centennial having been founded in 1913. We have a number of academic strengths at HSU but our performing and visual arts are among the strongest. For a university and community of our size, we are fortunate to have both community and university groups that provide a range of theatre performances. You will have the opportunity to watch Dell' Arte International that is based in a community close to Arcata. I also encourage you to take advantage of the beautiful natural environments that we are fortunate to live among. The university has a wonderful marine laboratory (570 Ewing Street, Trinidad) that welcomes guests. It is located in the beautiful little town of Trinidad just a few miles north of our airport. Take a walk in the wonderful redwood forest behind (East) of the university campus or go to the top of our Social and Behavioral Sciences building and walk to the West end and find one of the balconies for a great view of Humboldt Bay. Also take advantage of the many good restaurants and shopping that we have in Arcata.
