New Opportunities for High Holy Days As I am sure all of you know, planning for and organizing the worship during the High Holy Days is a huge and challenging undertaking. We are so lucky to have an ever-improving on-line program to assist us and many hard working volunteers. Of course, despite all of our good efforts and intentions, our services don’t always meet every Temple member’s needs. The late services fill up too quickly. The early services are too early for some people. The music isn’t the same as the congregation where you grew up. The seats are too close together. Of course there is much to work on, and we want you to know that we are trying hard to meet as many people’s needs as possible. In response to many people for whom our TRS services were not quite right, we are offering a few changes and some additions this year. We are starting the early morning services a half hour later, at 9 am this year. We’ve added an additional teen service on Rosh Hashanah evening. On Yom Kippur day, we will host an alternative service off site, at George Mason High School. This service will feature a creative, contemporary liturgy, instead of the Gates of Repentence prayerbook, will feature less formal music, a shortened Torah reading and will not include a traditional sermon. While it is not a family service, all over the age of 5 are welcome. The beginning time is a very pleasant 10:30 a.m. and there will be plenty of parking at the George Mason High School just a few blocks from the Temple. Cantor Allen Leider will lead the service along with some of our talented TRS musicians. Finally, following the Yom Kippur morning services at TRS, we have added a third early afternoon option: a Torah study session with our para rabbinic fellows. This, plus our traditional discussion hour and music and meditation hour, will allow you to pick the program which will help make your Yom Kippur afternoon observance more meaningful. We hope that this service and our other new changes fit your needs. Your attendance and feedback on some of the other changes will help us as we continue to plan for our very diverse congregation in the future. Although the High Holy days are not until the end of next month, we are working on all of the logistics to make this season and these holy days meaningful for all of us. Thank you, Rabbi Amy Schwartzman

Our parent organization, Women of Reform Judaism, WRJ, changed its name from National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods several years ago. Many congregational Sisterhoods have followed suit. We have decided it is time for us to do this also.

Although the name has changed, our dues and fundraising continue to support the Temple, the Reform Movement, the greater Jewish community (including Israel) and local charities. Primarily through the gift shop and the bagel bar, Women of TRS donates well over $10,000 annually the Temple alone.

We have fun while also providing social, cultural and educational opportunities to the women of TRS. We strive to further Jewish ideals and humanitarian causes.

We encourage your membership, participation and volunteering so we can continue to support TRS.

Cookbook Heating Up Again! With the Passover Cookbook completed, work is now underway to collect more recipes for all other Jewish holidays, including Shabbat. We seek original/unpublished: • Easy to cook crock pot recipes for busy/working families • Family favorites/traditions, which may be accompanied by a story/anecdote (i.e., my Bubbe used to make this in Brooklyn in the 1920’s). • YOUR special take on old standbys...we would love to have your creations for the Cookbook to preserve for posterity. For example, many terrific variations on matzo brei were shared on the TRS-List Serv at Passover, accompanied by stories. This is the type of contribution we seek! • We need your help and welcome all Temple members to participate, contribute recipes and join the cookbook committee (not just Women of TRS members). Joining the effort has many benefits - chance to mingle, make friends and of course, eat! There is a role for everyone who wants to get involved, from proofreading recipes, typing and editing, to testing or simply opening your home for a tasting event. Last year’s tasting event was a well-attended, fun evening for all. The committee looks forward to meeting and eating with you! Contact Bernice Porrazzo at 703/883-1843 or [email protected] or see our Facebook page to find out how to get involved.

Upcoming Women of TRS events: • National Museum of the Marine Corps with lunch at Bistro L’Hermitage, Occoquan on November 18 • National Portrait Gallery (“Seeing Gertrude Stein: 5 Stories” and “One Life: Ronald Reagan”) and Smithsonian Museum of American Art (“Multiplicity”) with lunch at Ping Pong Dim Sum Restaurant on December 16

Hineinu: Standing Together

At-Risk Youth team seeks volunteers for Alternative House The new Hineinu group working to support at-risk youth is making a difference in the lives of at-risk children, teens, and young mothers by partnering with Alternative House. You may know about the Alternative House Teen Shelter in Falls Church, which has served teens in crisis for decades. But, did you know that Alternative House also has after-school programs for kids in grades 4-6? Or that they run a Teen Center in the Culmore area for high school students and a residential program for young mothers? Or that they’ve begun a new initiative supporting the large number of homeless teens in Fairfax County? All of these programs have ongoing needs for “helping hands.” The At-Risk Youth action team aims to provide Alternative House with a continuing supply of volunteers and other kinds of support throughout the year (not just on Mitzvah Day!). If you want to participate in some way in this very worthy endeavor, let us know by e-mailing Deb Spero at [email protected] or Jack Samarias at [email protected].

Aging Relatives team seeks input on survey Are you caring for aging relatives? Concerned about your relatives—or yourself—needing help in the future? What can we do as a community to help each other? Please take a few minutes to complete a short survey to help TRS and the broader community shape the way to help. Here’s the link to the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K2KLHR2.

Please contact Fran Miller (703/734-1457) or [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

Stop Hunger Now

TRS proudly joined with members of the local interfaith community and students, scouts, and businesses to package more than 150,000 nonperishable meals for hungry people around the world. The event was held at Lutheran Redeemer Church in McLean on Saturday, June 11. TRS volunteers set up the food resources for meal preparation on the preceding Friday afternoon. Then, on Saturday, more than 500 volunteers measured rice, vegetable protein, and dried vegetables into plastic bags for worldwide distribution. Thanks to all who helped in this exciting local initiative to end the tragedy of hunger. Look for another meal prep opportunity this fall.

Traditions Helpline Answer See page 11 for question Dear Need More Education, Basically, the collection of ancient Rabbinic writings, consisting of the Mishnah and Gemara make up the Talmud. But, what exactly are these writings? That’s a more involved answer. The Oral Law, or the legal commentary on the Torah, was never written down, with the thought that the best conveyers of Jewish wisdom were teachers and not books. But after a number of challenging historic events, the great leader, Rabbi Judah haNisi, decided to record the Oral Law before this tradition was lost. The Talmud captures debates and discussions on legal and non-legal issues, their application and practicality. The primary text is the Mishna which was written between 200 BCE and 200 CE. The Rabbinic analysis of this text is called the Gemara. Together these two components comprise the Talmud. Two distinct Talmuds were written over the next 300 years, one in Jerusalem, called the Palestinian Talmud and one in Babylonia.

Building Community One Shabbat Dinner at a Time By Melissa Hill Jones During this past school year, sixth grade families at Temple Rodef Shalom participated in a pilot project to share Shabbat or Havdalah potluck meals in host homes. The grade was on the small side, about 66 students, but they did not all know each other well; especially if they attended Sunday’s early session rather than late, or Tuesday Hebrew rather than Wednesday. My big idea behind organizing the project was to build community in “Jewish time” by observing Shabbat in the smaller, more intimate and relaxed setting of a shared meal in a fellow congregant’s home. This opportunity for students and their families to build friendships outside of our classrooms and outside of the Temple walls was easy to replicate and the project was a huge success. After seven wonderful dinners hosted over six months, the enthusiasm generated by the pilot project’s sixth grade family participants resulted in exciting new developments that will impact the entire congregation. First, the CE21 committee adopted the idea as a congregation-wide initiative. Soon after, the Jubilee committee adopted the idea of 50 potluck Shabbat or Havdalah dinners hosted in a single weekend on January 27-28, 2012 as a meaningful way to celebrate Temple Rodef Shalom’s 50th Anniversary as a community. Next year the Religious school will be expanding the Shabbat dinners project to the 5th and 6th grades. (continues on next page)

Here is feedback, reprinted with permission, from just a few of the participants: “I have frequently felt the size of TRS. We had been going regularly to the Friday family services for a while now. As different grades are invited for the dinner each month Mommy/Daddy & Me it was hard to get to know people as there was always (For children born between October 2009 and March 2011) different faces. From the community dinners we have started to get to know people, have familiar faces at This interactive class that meets once a week is a great way to the Temple and are getting to know other families on a meet other families and introduce your child to our nursery social basis. She LOVES making challah according to the Mrs. Jones recipe. I think the whole thing is brilliant. It’s a good example of why every now and then a community needs a catalyst. Having attended three of these and having hosted one, my first and last question is: why didn’t we do this before? But the answer is obvious. We didn’t have a Melissa Hill Jones before!! Anyway, my favorite moment? As a guest, being the only man in the kitchen helping out with the pre-Shabbat dinner prep! The honor of the “men of TRS” was upheld! I can carve a chicken like nobody’s business. Plus I am hugely domestic and we’re lucky I didn’t start cleaning up afterwards….” —Adam Gruen “I would just add that we’ve met people that we didn’t know before even though our children have been going to school together for 7 years. We had two kids meet at our house who go to the same secular school and play on the same team, but never saw each other at the Temple since they’ve always attended different sessions and days. It’s a wonderful relaxing way to meet others in the comfort of a fellow member’s home.” —Beth Silver
