We are so lucky to have an ever-improving on-line program to assist us and many hard working volunteers. Of course, despite all of our good efforts and intentions, our services don’t always meet every Temple member’s needs. The late services fill up too quickly. The early services are too early for some people. The music isn’t the same as the congregation where you grew up. The seats are too close together. Of course there is much to work on, and we want you to know that we are trying hard to meet as many people’s needs as possible. In response to many people for whom our TRS services were not quite right, we are offering a few changes and some additions this year. We are starting the early morning services a half hour later, at 9 am this year. We’ve added an additional teen service on Rosh Hashanah evening. On Yom Kippur day, we will host an alternative service off site, at George Mason High School. This service will feature a creative, contemporary liturgy, instead of the Gates of Repentence prayerbook, will feature less formal music, a shortened Torah reading and will not include a traditional sermon. While it is not a family service, all over the age of 5 are welcome. The beginning time is a very pleasant 10:30 a.m. and there will be plenty of parking at the George Mason High School just a few blocks from the Temple. Cantor Allen Leider will lead the service along with some of our talented TRS musicians. Finally, following the Yom Kippur morning services at TRS, we have added a third early afternoon option: a Torah study session with our para rabbinic fellows. This, plus our traditional discussion hour and music and meditation hour, will allow you to pick the program which will help make your Yom Kippur afternoon observance more meaningful. We hope that this service and our other new changes fit your needs. Your attendance and feedback on some of the other changes will help us as we continue to plan for our very diverse congregation in the future. Although the High Holy days are not until the end of next month, we are working on all of the logistics to make this season and these holy days meaningful for all of us. December 14-18, 2011 I’ve been thinking a lot about affiliation lately, contemplating the importance of “belonging.” We are so often defined by Every two years, the Union for Reform Judaism brings together the affiliations we choose: Where do you work?
