It is an extremely popular activity with over 90 students in it. When a student signs up for Strength and Conditioning, it would be reasonable to expect that the majority of the time would be spent in either the weight room or fitness room. However, due to the high number of students in this activity, this is not always the case, and Strength and Conditioning has been broken up into several groups. The There is a group A and a group B. However, it becomes even more complicated. Within group A, there is a team New Zealand, a team Italy and a team USA. Then within group B there is a team Red, a team White and a team Blue. Pulse Staff Students are assigned groups and then teams within the group, and they have to switch everyday between the weight room, fitness room and the library. Just to be clear, working out in a library is not exactly an option, so why is the library a place to go for Strength and Conditioning?

Editor-in-Chief Aside from the high , the weight room is also in desperate need of an update, as the paint on the walls is fading and peeling, the floor mats are completely worn out, and the majority of the equipment is damaged, rusted or broken. Madeline Blinderman The weight room is an extremely popular facility used by nearly every sports team at The Harvey School. So why is such an important room rundown and old? Harvey should shift some attention and funds to the weight room to clean it up and put in new equipment that people will actually use. Part of the reason that students in Strength and Conditioning have to cycle rooms every day is Kevin Dorf because the weight room becomes incredibly packed. It becomes so overfilled with students because there are so many old Dajour Fisher and unused machines taking up space that could be used to actually workout. Zachary Gault Right upstairs from the weight room is a newly made fitness room that has treadmills and other exercise machines for cardio. There are also a rack of dumbbells, a pull up bar and two weight machines. With that being said, there is actu- Nikkita Johnson ally a lot of unused space in the fitness room. Zachary Latham First, to solve the problem of overcrowding, Strength and Conditioning should be offered every term. In making Tali Looney this change, the school could limit the amount of students to a reasonable amount. Students should also be given a prefer- ence as to which room they want to workout in, as some students prefer the treadmills in the fitness center, while others Julia Mallon prefer the weights in the weight room. Samuel Shapiro My suggestion is to remove all of the old equipment from the weight room and replace it with two lifting platforms Michael Spadafora and two power racks that can be used for a multitude of exercises and would make the weight room much more efficient. Then, a new bench should go where the old one is now. That change, coupled with new barbells, weights and dumbbells, would turn the weight room into an improved and more efficient place to workout. The school could also replace the old cracked mirrors and paint over the walls. Cleaning up the weight room would completely transform it, and it would become a far more welcoming place that would make students proud. The condition of the weight room is not completely the school’s responsibility. Students need to respect the expen- Faculty Advisors sive equipment and clean up after themselves in the gym to keep it in good condition. If we were to get new equipment and Lesley Boltz students treated it as poorly as we do currently, then it would not last and would quickly become just as worn down as it is now. Virginia Holmes I am not the only one who feels this way about the weight room either. To gain some perspective, I interviewed senior Teddy Little, a veteran of the weight room. I asked Little his opinion of the new group’s system that has been put in place within the Strength and Conditioning after school activity. Little stated, “The downside to this system is that not everyone gets to work out every day, and when you do get to work out, most of the equipment is taken up due to there being such a large number of students.” I followed up by asking Little if the school should limit the amount of students allowed into Strength and Con- ditioning. He replied, “Yes and no. Some students who signed up for it hardly ever go, or when they do go, they never work out and just distract other people who are try- ing to better themselves. However, some students need a sports credit, and this may be their only way of getting it. If we were to put a limit on how many can join, then many students would lose the opportunity to earn that credit.” I also asked Director of Athletics Patrick Kennedy his opinion of the amount of students in Strength and Con- ditioning. Mr. Kennedy stated, “The only sports we offer in the winter time are ice hockey and basketball. As a result, many students choose to participate in the Strength and Conditioning program.” He added, “While I’m extremely pleased that we have so many students interested in taking care of their bodies, it does create logistical challenges in creating a safe environment for all participants.” Clearly, I am not alone in my concerns about not only the Strength and Conditioning activity, but also about the weight room. It is clear that the school needs to pay more attention to this issue and make the changes that stu- dents and coaches really care about. Respectfully,
