Digital dorsal habitus photographs for A. imperatorius Bergroth and A. regalis Bergroth, the two included species, are provided. Selected morphological structures are documented with scanning electron micrographs. Male genitalia are documented for the fi rst time with digital photomicrographs and line drawings. The harpactorine eggs, laid in clusters and covered by spumaline secretions, are distinguished from the eggs of other reduviid subfamilies by the elaborate net-work-like chorionic collar extensions and opercular outgrowths. The collar extensions may be short with spongy structure, or considerably long with honeycomb structure terminating in filamentous apices. The body of the egg has prominent follicular markings and the anterior end is marked by a distinct collar having the spermatic groove, aero-micropylar openings and the sealing bar. The chorionic collar extensions and the opercular outgrowths, along with the aero-micropylar systems and the inner aerostatic layer, efficiently transport atmospheric oxygen to the interior of the eggs.The ultrastructure of the chorion, the operculum and the aero-micropylar system of 5 species of harpactorine bugs from Southern India is reported. Introduction The harpactorine eggs are considered unique in many respects among Reduviidae and have received considerable attention from many workers (Kershaw 1909; Readio 1926; Odhiambo 1956; Southwood 1956; Edwards 1962; Cobben 1968; Cobben and Henstra 1968; Miller 1953. 1971; Salkeld 1972; Hinton 1981). Though there is uniformity in the general organisation within the subfamily, there definitely exist many distinct variations in the egg structure ofdifferent species. An attempt is presently made to study these variations in the eggs of 5 harpactorine bugs collected from Southern India. -

According to Sir Walter Morley Fletcher (Afzal Husain, 1938), " at a very modest esti- mate, the losses caused to India by insects that attack crops, timber and animal products cannot be less than 200 crores of rupees and a loss of over a million and a half of human lives ". The injurious insects attack in amazingly large numbers: 85,400 adults of the notorious Aspongopus Janus F. were collected from an area of 8 46 marlas " (66' x 33') of " kaddus " (Lagenaria vulgaris Seringe) by 20 men in 10 minutes on the 2nd of September, 1939, at Lyallpur. To prevent the injurious insects from becoming unduly abundant and destructive Ento- mologists have developed four arms of defence, viz., mechanical, cultural, chemical and biological. The work on the first three arms of defence has been in progress now for a number of years, but the work on the biological control of insect pests is of recent growth particularly in India. The biological control is based on the assumption that a number of insect pests are destroyed by their insect enemies. Such insects are group- able into (1) parasites and (2) predators. Both these types of insects, rival- ling each other in importance, rank among the Zamindars best and true friends. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A brief synopsis on the classification of the Harpactorinae is presented. The two tribes found in the Neotropical region are discussed and future directions for research are highlighted. Introduction Reduviidae, or assassin bugs, have more than 6.000 described species, and is one of the three most speciose families of Hemiptera (Forero 2008), and the second largest of Heteroptera, exhibiting a range of life histories (Schuh and Slater 1995, Weirauch and Schuh 2011). Species in this family are mostly predatory, although species of Triatominae are hematophagous, in which some are important vectors of Chagas disease in Latin America (Lent & Wygodzinsky 1979). Although generally polyphagous, some of the predatory groups show affinities for particular prey, such as ants in Holoptilinae (Jacobson 1911, Miller 1953, Poinar 1991), termites in Salyavata (Salyavatinae) (McMahan 1982, 1983), or millipedes in Ectrichodiinae (Miller 1953, Carpintero and Maldonado 1996). The morphological diversity exhibited by Reduviidae is also reflected in the number of subfamilies so far proposed, which ranges from 21 to 32 (Maldonado 1990, Putshkov and Putshkov 1985). Suarez ABSTRACT The following thesis comprises three parts: (1) the description of a new fossil assassin bug, (2) the use of this newly described taxon to inform the phylogenetic history of the family, and (3) a survey of previously-described extinct taxa compiled into the first taxonomic catalog of fossil Reduvioidea. The first chapter presents a new Eocene (Ypresian) fossil assassin bug, Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. (Reduviidae: Harpactorinae), described from the Green River Formation of Colorado. The specimens informing this description are marked by an extraordinary level of preservation, particularly in external and internal structures of the adult male genitalia. Following the description, discussions of phylogenetic signal and the implications for the systematics and evolutionary history of the group are presented. The second chapter uses Aphelicophontes iuddorum gen. et sp. nov. as a new calibration point in order to re-estimate the divergence dates of Reduvioidea. This analysis also utilizes a new set of fossil calibrations from previous studies. Tree topology is inferred using MrBayes and RAxML, and divergence dates are inferred using BEAST2. -
