Working from the model of the 'converged Consultant Computacenter Cloud', the selection of components ensures that the right form of services is provided very quickly, depending on the requirements at hand.

Benefits With this solution, the HPI can offer its high-performance computing capacity to researchers all over the world with greater ease and at lower cost. This approach also provides the scientists in Potsdam with new opportunities for investigating the provision and use of Cloud services in greater detail.

The Challenge At the Future SOC Lab, interested scientists are provided with a hardware and software infrastructure, free of charge, for research purposes. In some cases this infrastructure includes technologies not yet available in the marketplace, technologies that usually cannot be financed in a normal university setting, such as servers with up to 64 cores and 2 Terabytes of central memory. For complex high-performance computing, the HPI has a computer infrastructure with a total of 1,500 computer cores, some 30 Terabytes of RAM and over 200 Terabytes of hard drive space. Researchers for whom resources such as these are prohibi- tively expensive can use the infrastructure to realise their projects. These offerings are particularly de- signed for scientists in the fields of computer science and business informatics. Areas of emphasis include Cloud computing, parallelisation and in-memory technologies. To make it easier to provide these services for researchers and partners in industry, HPI sought a private-Cloud solution oriented around industry standards, a solution that is open and permits use of the public Cloud.

Solution Working through a portal, the solution by Hewlett-Packard makes it easy to provide interested researchers with the platforms and infrastructures they need for all conceivable applications and projects. The solution ensures that different services such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS) are equally easy to manage. The architecture and the open, standardised integration of conventional infra- structures ensure openness and flexibility in operation. Components such as HP Intelligent Racks provide optimum distribution of workloads while supplying information about energy consumption. The HP Stor- ageServ storage systems used permit operation of a three-layered storage architecture (automated sub- volume gradations) that recognises the different storage requirements for end users, applications and data storage; this secures high-performance and cost-effective operation. The CloudSystem Matrix Implementa- tion Service provided for smooth implementation while ensuring that the requirements of the HPI were met right from the beginning.

Benefits Thanks to the Cloud solution by Hewlett-Packard and Computacenter, in future it will be even easier for re- searchers to use the HPI Future SOC Lab. Thanks to the 'Converged Cloud' model by Hewlett-Packard, rules can also be generated for the allocation of computing resources. 'In future, users of these services can use a portal that makes it very simple to compile the infrastructures and capacities they need, store the compilation in template form and automatically provide the infrastructures and capacities with the click of a mouse', according to Computacenter Project Manager Claus Müller. Not only researchers but also graduates with Bachelor's and Master's degrees can use this offering to present unbureaucratic requests for high-power computing resources. The solution also offers the HPI the ability to investigate usage of Cloud services in its own internal research projects.

Hasso Plattner Institut The Institute for Software Systems Engineering (HPI) is, in legal terms, a GmbH (limited- liability company). It was founded in October 1998 as part of a public-private partnership. The Institute is funded by the non-profit Hasso Plattner Foundation for Software Systems Engineering, which is also the sole interest holder in the company. The Federal State of 's contribution consisted in its provi- sion of a plot of land near the Griebnitzsee, on which the building complexes of HPI and Potsdam Univer- sity's Institute for Informatics were subsequently erected. Professor Hasso Plattner has pledged the foun- dation from his private assets for the day-to-day running of the Institute over a period of more than 20 years. Due to his commitment, he is one of the most important private supporters of science in Germany.
