Price Music Review Kanye West, Jesus Is King US 2019, Def Jam Recordings As any emcee should, Kanye West has developed and matured as a produc- er and lyricist since his 2004 triple-platinum debut project, College Dropout. West’s Gospel project, Jesus Is King, is his ninth studio project and the fol- low-up to his June 2018 release, Ye. After delays, Jesus Is King was released on 25 October 2019. For West, openly talking about Jesus in his music is not new, for he rocked the mainstream hip-hop world in 2004 when he re- leased the single “Jesus Walks”, the final single to be released from College Dropout. Jesus Is King features eleven tracks totaling 27 minutes and 4 seconds, which is short for either a secular or gospel hip-hop project.1 Interestingly, significant changes were made to the track listing order on the album. Kim Kardashian-West announced the tracks and order in August 2019, but the list- ing and order released by Kanye West in October 2019 were markedly differ- ent.2 Such a change could suggest an earlier lack of clarity on what the album was going to be. West did promise that Jesus Is King would be “fully immersed in religion […] with lyrics about God, being saved, and minimal cursing”.3 Jesus Is King employs several aspects of Black Christian worship, from mass choir to melodic organ. West takes the best of the Black gospel tradition, in- fusing it with his own lyrical genius to proclaim what God has done for him, which is best expressed on the track “God Is”, a remake of the classic spiritual.

    by Ann Friou 22 hillviews spring/summer 09 hen Dennis Dunn started Texas State’s International Studies program in 1984, Whis goal was to create a first-rate, interdis- ciplinary international studies degree that combined rigorous courses, multiple perspectives, top faculty and talented students. The program’s success was recognized in 2005 when an academic review team from Florida International University called it “the best international studies degree between the University of Kentucky and the University of Arizona.” The praise didn’t surprise Dunn, who continues to direct the program. “We wanted to educate leaders for an increasingly interdependent world,” he said. “Today, our graduates are working around the world or pursuing additional educa- tional opportunities. We have graduates at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow (Victoria Wolf, B.S. interdisciplinary studies, 1991), the U.S. Consulate in Johannesburg (William Steuer, B.A. international studies, 1989), the Central Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Department of State, many businesses, numerous non-governmental offices, and various law schools, M.B.A. and Ph.D. programs around the globe. Two students have received the prestigious Presidential Management Internship in the U.S. White House (Sarah Binion, B.A. mass communication, 2001; M.A. international studies, 2004; and Jeff Kile, B.A. international studies and French, 1997; M.A. international studies, 2004). “We have done what we set out to do,” Dunn said, “and we are pleased that our program, faculty and graduates are being noticed.” Hundreds of Texas State students now study abroad each year. Some 92 courses are offered in 13 foreign countries by Texas State faculty, and the university has exchange agreements with foreign universities through which students can study on a foreign campus, with foreign faculty, for a semester or longer, at roughly the same cost as studying on the Texas State campus.

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT WASN’T even six months ago that Shakira and Jennifer Lopez performed for a tightly packed crowd of more than 60,000 people in Miami at the Super Bowl, while Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas picked up five Grammys at what turned out to be 2020’s last major music business gathering since COVID-19 halted live events. WBy Friday, March 13, the NBA and NHL had suspended play, the NCAA had canceled its spring tournaments, and theaters and live music venues had closed. As “safer at home” orders spread throughout the country, our homes became our offices, our schools, our daycares and our social hubs. Quickly and dramatically, life had changed. Our routines were disrupted, and we struggled to find balance. Still, the music industry was experiencing a strong start to the year. Audio streaming was growing through early March, up 20.9% over the same period in 2019. Total music consumption was up 10.8% in the first 10 weeks of the year. As working from home became a reality for many, some of the key music listening hours, such as during commutes, were disrupted. But one thing that has remained consistent as the pandemic has unfolded is entertainment’s place in helping consumers escape, relax and feel energized. In fact, in our recent consumer research studies, 73% of people said they would go crazy without entertainment during this time. Then, just as many communities began to slowly reopen, the country was shaken by the senseless May 25 killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.
