The aim of this study was to compile the species sampled in different areas in the State of Acre. An inventory was carried out in pristine forest in the municipality of Xapuri. This list was complemented with the information of a previous inventory carried out in a forest fragment in the municipality of Senador Guiomard and with a list of species deposited at the Entomological Collection of National Institute of Amazonian Research– INPA. -

Accepted 09-III-2012. Abstract: Simplification of natural habitats leads to a modification of the community associated with a host plant. Pequi trees (Caryocar brasiliense) are common to find in central Brazil, especially in the middle of mono- cultures, such as soy, corn, pasturelands or Eucalyptus plantations. On this scenario we hypothesized that habitat modification differentially affects the diversity of ants and herbivore insects associated with this species. The aim of the work was to test if C. brasiliense trees located in human modified habitats, support a lower species richness and abundance of ants, and a greater species richness and abundance of insect herbivores, compared to preserved cerrado habitats. The study was conducted in a Cerrado area located in Northern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Ants and herbivore insects were collected monthly during 2005 using beating technique. The results showed that ant species richness was higher in pequi trees located in preserved Cerrado, followed by trees in pastureland and Eucalyptus plantation, respectively. -

Delabie2* AbsTRacT The ant genus Ectatomma (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is typically Neo- tropical and is the only genus of the subfamily Ectatomminae for which no cytogenetic data previously existed. Cytogenetic studies of five species of the Ectatomma genus are reported here. Colonies were collected at Viçosa (Minas Gerais, Brazil), Ilhéus and Manoel Vitorino (Bahia, Brazil). In this genus, the chromosome number ranged from 2n=36 to 46: Ectatomma brunneum Smith, 2n=44 (karyotype formula: 2K=22M + 22A); Ectatomma muticum Mayr, n=20 (K=16M + 4A); Ectatomma permagnum Forel, 2n=46 (2K=20M + 26A); Ectatomma tuberculatum Olivier, 2n=36 (2K=30M + 6A), while the observed metaphases of Ectatomma edentatum Roger, with 2n=46, did not allow a precise karyotype definition. The variations presented by the karyotypes of these ants can be attributed to the increase in the number of acrocentric chromosomes, probably because of rearrangements such as centric fission. This study is important for the understanding of evolutionary processes in the Ectatomminae subfamily. This endemic species from southern Bahia is easily distinguished from all other members of the genus by the peculiar morphology of mandibles and the reduction of the antennal segments observed in both sexes. We provide a partial redefinition of the genus diagnosis taking into account the antennal structure of the new species. A new identification key for workers is provided. Key words: Formicidae, Ectatomminae, Typhlomyrmecini, Typhlomyrmex diagnosis, identification key, Typhlomyrmex meire new species, Brazil Introduction Typhlomyrmex Mayr, 1862 (Formicidae: Ectatomminae: Typhlomyrmecini) is a small genus of Neotropical ants, which included six valid species and one nomen nudum prior to this report (Brown, 1965; Kempf, 1972; Brandão 1991; Bolton, 1995 and 2003). It is today the single genus of the tribe Typhlomyrmecini Emery, 1911, since Prionopelta Mayr, 1866 and Rhopalopone Emery, 1897 (junior synonym of Gnamptogenys) have been combined in the Amblyoponini (Brown, 1960) and Ectatommini (Brown, 1958), respectively. -

In this study are presented the new records of nine ant species for the state of Rio de Janeiro: Amblyopone armigera Mayr, 1897, A. elongata (Santschi, 1912), Prionopelta punctulata Mayr, 1866, Lachnomyrmex plaumanni Borgmeier, 1957, Trachymyrmex iheringi (Emery, 1887), Pachycondyla arhuaca Forel, 1901, P. stigma (Fabricius, 1804), Thaumatomyrmex mutilatus Mayr 1887 and Proceratium brasiliense Borgmeier, 1959. They were captured during three systematic inventories carried out in Tinguá Biological Reserve, in Restinga da Marambaia and in Vista Chinesa Forest Reserve. Ant fauna (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) associated to arboreal nests of Nasutitermes spp. (Isoptera, Termitidae) in a cacao plantation in southeastern Bahia, Brazil. Ants are among the most common arthropods that colonize termite nests. The aim of this study was to identify the ant fauna associated to termite nests found in a cacao plantation in the county of Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil, with emphasis on the fauna that uses the nests as foraging and/or nesting environment. For this purpose, 34 active, decadent and abandoned nests of Nasutitermes corniger, N. ephratae and Nasutitermes sp., with different volumes and degrees of activity, were dissected. A total of 54 ant species, belonging to 23 genera and five subfamilies, was found in the constructions.
