Youth Sailing Guidelines • Arrive prepared and on time for class; late sailors may not be able to participate in class that day • Stay with your class until dismissed by your instructor. • Life jackets must be worn at all times while on the docks and on the water. • Swimming and jumping off docks is not allowed. Repeat offenders may be suspended. • Notify RYC youth sailing staff at 585.314.9760 if you will be late or are unable to attend class on a given day. • All students are expected to be cooperative, supportive and respectful of instructors, students and other people and RYC property at all times. • Students are responsible for reporting worn or broken parts as well as damage done to RYC property, boats and equipment or the property of another student. STUDENTS WHO ARE UNWILLING TO FOLLOW THE YOUTH SAILING GUIDELINES MAY BE SUSPENDED OR DISMISSED YOUTH SAILING PROCEDURES DROP OFF AND PICK UP: We ask all parents to park and walk their sailors through the entrance of the Youth Sailing Center to sign in at each group’s location. Please do not drop off your sailor in the parking lot and drive away. Pick-up follows the same procedure. Park your car and sign your sailor out with their designated instructors. SIGNING-IN / SIGNING-OUT: Adults MUST sign-in and sign-out their sailors at the beginning and end of EACH day! Sailors may not leave the program without being signed out by an adult. If your sailor is going home with someone else’s parent or being picked up by a caregiver please inform your instructor during sign-in. (Race Team participants may sign for themselves with their instructor) YOUTH SAILING DRESS CODE CLOSED-TOE SHOES: Non-marking closed-toe shoes are REQUIRED at all times during our Youth Sailing Program. (Sailors will sit-out if they are not wearing the appropriate footwear. Sandals/Flip-Flops are not safe to wear) SUNSCREEN: Sailors must apply SUNSCREEN every morning: Sunscreen is MANDATORY! Please apply sunscreen to your sailor before arriving to RYC and pack (and label) some for re-application throughout the day. We apply sunscreen before and after every time on the water! HATS: The Youth Sailing Program encourages ALL sailors to wear hats to protect them from the sun’s harmful UV rays. RYC Logo Headgear is available for sale in the Clubhouse. PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHES, SHOES, SUNGLASSES, HATS, PFD’S… EVERYTHING! RYC is not responsible for loss or damage to the personal property of its sailors. LUNCH BRING YOUR OWN: The Youth Sailing Center also has a refrigerator for students that bring their lunch. Please refrain from packing any peanut products in your sailor’s lunch. PURCHASE A LUNCH: A box lunch or anything off of the Youth Sail Menu can be purchased from the club. If you are interested in this option, fill out the menu form at check in every morning. YOUTH SAIL EQUIPMENT Life Jackets: US Coast Guard Approved Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s) are required to be worn by all sailors enrolled in the RYC Youth Sailing Program. SAILORS ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN PFD’S. Comfort and proper fit are important. A type III PFD is suggested and approved for all students, for all classes, by New York State. WATER BOTTLES: Instructors will issue each sailor a water bottle on the first day, please bring this water bottle with you every time you sail at RYC. TOWELS: The Youth Sailing Program does not provide towels; please LABEL any towels that you send with your sailor! SWIMSUIT/CHANGE OF CLOTHES: All sailors taking swim lessons should wear their swimsuits to class. Be sure to pack a dry change of clothes! Dress appropriately for the conditions: Remember, it is always cooler on the water than it is at your house! RYC highly discourages wearing anything cotton: wicking dry shirts/rash guards and/or foul weather attire are suggested. OTHER INFORMATION: WEATHER: Classes will be held each scheduled day regardless of weather. Safety is RYC staff’s number one priority; weather conditions for each day will dictate how much on the water sailing time each class will have. Some days bring thunderstorms, no wind, or too much wind, which could limit time on the water. Alternative boating related activities and/or field trips will be arranged by the instruction staff. FRIDAY THEME DAYS: Every Friday will have a different theme, check out the calendar and get creative! SAIL-BY: The last day of each session starting at 11:30, sailors will sail in the basin close to the Club and Youth Sailing Center. Parents are encouraged to come to RYC to watch their sailor “show off” what they have learned in the past two weeks. Don’t Forget Your Camera! SECOND FRIDAY PIZZA PARTIES: Following the sail-by on the last day of each session we will be having a pizza party; each sailor is encouraged to bring a dish to pass! Unsure of what to bring, ask any of our instructors for ideas! SAVE THE DATE: At the end of the summer there will be an awards banquet, all sailors from all sessions are invited!! Thursday August, 9th all sailors are welcome to join in the fun: Dinner, Ice Cream Bar and Slide Show. .
