CW Sonderopic has spent most of the last ten years designing, manufacturing and distributing the most recent revolution in cine optics. In collaboration with sister company Leica Technical ............................................ 14 Camera, CW (Cine Wetzlar) has introduced two lines of premium spherical cine lenses that infuse the natural beauty, faithful rendering and creamy sharpness of Leica’s 100 years of still photo lens heritage CINE MACROLUX into modern, purpose-built cine optics that are crafted to tell your stories well into the next century. Overview ............................................ 16 Features ............................................. 18 OUR PROCESS Technical ............................................ 20 Filmmaking has increasingly become a digital pipeline, from capture to processing to post to projection. And while digital tools have found their place in the work of lens design, the construction and assembly of Leica cine lenses remains an analogue art form, a craftsman’s endeavor, to create an object who’s CINE MOUNTS physical beauty is only matched by its optical performance. Overview ............................................ 22 SL PL Mount ....................................... 23 M PL Mount ........................................ 24 OUR FUTURE CW Sonderoptic continues to listen to professionals, image aficionados and dreamers eager to see the future expanded. Your wishes and desires nurture our spirit of invention and innovation. Your creativity and filmmaking craft inspire us to try new things. You keep telling stories. We’ll help you paint them. 2 3 The goal of the Leica Summilux-C cine lenses was lofty from the start. Take everything known about modern lens design, then perfect it and beautify it until it reaches the border of impossible. The trick, the magic of these lenses, was to do so without losing the Leica character, the natural color rendition and the kindness of the human face and form. The Summilux-C lenses achieve this goal with their absence of breathing, color fringing and distortion, but where they excel is the alchemy of smooth, soft skin tones and backgrounds bounded by a clarity and resolution that distinguished the subject matter in a powerful but natural way without sacrifice or compromise. 4 5 CREAMY SHARPNESS The most defining characteristic of Leica cine lenses, and the Summilux-C lenses in particular, is their ability to capture a creamy sharpness in the image. Often lenses are either all sharp or all soft. These lenses have the unique ability to represent edges and fine details with clarity yet treat more humane subjects like skin tones and out off focus elements with a softness that just feels right. NATURAL, CONSISTENT One of the most difficult things to capture is what we see COLOR RENDITION with our own eyes. The Summilux-C lenses are designed to reproduce the colors, the feel and the shape of the world as we see it, much as Leica’s classic rangefinder cameras and M lenses have done for street photographers for decades. EDGE-TO-EDGE FOCUS Despite their small size and large aperture, the Summilux-C AND ILLUMINATION lenses provide consistent and even illumination into the far corners of the image. They also maintain consistent focus across the entire field. AWARD WINNING The Leica Summilux-C lenses were honored with the 2014 Scientific and Engineering Award® from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (©A.M.P.A.S.®) for their innovative and ground-breaking optical and mechanical design. They retain the natural focus transitions, authentic color rendition and creamy sharpness that is distinctive of the Leica look and feel but in a smaller, more accessible package. The Summicron-C lenses are as well suited for big budget feature films and TV shows as they are production companies and growing businesses looking for a beautiful set of lenses to invest in that will provide a timeless and workable image for all kinds of productions. They are designed to color match and intercut with the Leica Summilux-C lenses. 10 11 CREAMY SHARPNESS Like the Summilux-C lenses, the Leica Summicron-C lenses have a unique yet familiar way of rendering skin tones that feels natural and has depth. The focus falls off gently to give a dimensionality to faces and other organic subjects. Yet their ability to cleanly resolve edges and other fine details makes them one of the most versatile sets of cine lenses available. NATURAL, CONSISTENT The Summicron-C lenses feature custom coatings that strive COLOR RENDITION to transmit the color of the subject without painting the image with their own hue. Capturing what you see as you see it can save considerable time in post production. Also, starting from a natural image allows a world of flexibility when you do want to manipulate the image afterward. EDGE-TO-EDGE FOCUS The Summicron-C lenses are one of the newest lines of AND ILLUMINATION purpose-built cine lenses available and were designed with larger digital sensors in mind. As such they have a significantly larger image circle to maximize the increased sensor size and resolution available to modern cinematographers while maintaining illumination and holding focus all the way into the corners of the frame. The diopter, a secret weapon of classic cinematography, has been reinvented for the modern age. Often diopters are thought of as just a tool for tabletop work on longer lenses, but the creative possibilities are extend well beyond that into the world of the wide and the beautiful.

LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-MSUPER ELMAR-M 21mm 50 mm f/3.4 f/2 ASPH. ASPH. 1 More than 30 years after the launch of Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm, which is still available, the Leica APO Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm ASPH. represents a totally new development. With its compact body - only marginally longer and slightly heavier than the Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm, and with an almost identical diameter, it provides visibly higher image quality. On the Leica APO Summicron-M 1:2/50 mm ASPH. the exceptional correction enables all aberrations to be reduced to a minimum level that is negli- gible in digital photography. Its key features include excellent contrast rendition, all the way to the corners of the image, even with a fully open aperture. The use of a „floating element“ ensures that this is retained, even for close-up shots. Vignetting is limited to a maximum - i.e. in the corners of the image - of just 2 stops at full aperture in 35 mm format, or around 1 on the Leica M8 mo- dels. Stopping down to 2.8 visibly reduces this light deterioration towards the edge of the image, with practically only the natural vignetting remaining. Distortion is very low at a maximum of just 0.4 % (pin cushoin), which is practically imperceptible. A total of eight lens elements are used to achieve this exceptional performance. To realize the apochromatic correction (resulting in a com- mon focusing plane for three light wavelengths), three are made of glass types with high anomalous partial color dispersion, while two of the others have a high refractive index.

Press information Leica presents the TL-System: The new camera system impresses with perfected features, unique design, precise, high-performance lenses and a range of functional accessories and technical equipment. Wetzlar, 8 November 2016. Building on the Leica T camera system, which has been continually advanced in terms speed, ease of handling and flexibility since its launch in 2014, the Leica TL embraces all the perfected features and leads the innovative camera concept into a new generation with even more innovations and new aspects of its design. One of these innovations is the doubling of the size of its internal buffer memory to 32 GB. Other new features are improved autofocus, especially in AF-C mode, and optimised compatibility with lenses from other Leica camera systems. For instance, the Leica TL now supports SL-Lenses with OIS and allows the use of Leica R-System lenses in combination with the R-Adapter L. A new Leica TL app with revised functions offers additional options for sharing pictures by email or on social networks and is now available for the first time for Android as well as iOS devices. The Leica TL will in available in three colour options from the date of launch: the silver and black versions are identical in design and construction, while the titanium-coloured option is distinguished by a bevelled edge (chamfer) to the top and bottom plates. Functional camera accessories, such as the new high-quality protectors in Nappa leather, which can stay on the camera when changing the battery, and colour-coordinated carrying straps in stone-grey, black, red and cemento, round off the TL system portfolio.

  • The M 0.8 Line of Lenses Consists of 7 Focal Lengths from 21 Mm to 90 Mm
M 0.8 The M 0.8 line of lenses consists of 7 focal lengths from 21 mm to 90 mm. The lenses use the high speed full frame M-Mount to maintain their small size while offering a variety of design improvements to make them more compatible with the cinema production environment. ICONIC IMAGES, CLASSIC CHARACTER The Leitz M 0.8 lenses bring a unique interpretation of light, skin tones and color that has inspired photographers and cinematographers for years. Naturally the lenses offer a sharp and focused center with gradual and pleasing fall off of contrast and light toward the edges, leading the view to the image center as well as adding dimensionality to the scene. This look and feel is now available to the cinematographer searching for something new. INCREDIBLY SMALL AND LIGHTWEIGHT The compact size of the Leitz M 0.8 lenses is made possible by retaining the Leica M-Mount. They range from 74 mm to 98 mm and weigh between 380-835 g. They are a dream combination for cameras in drone or gimbal configurations. Each lens has a standardized 80 mm front diameter with a 77 mm screw-in filter thread. The 0.8 module gear rings allow lens motors and follow focus systems to work seamlessly. CAMERA COMPATIBILITY The Leitz M 0.8 lenses use the Leica M-Mount rather than a PL-Mount to maintain their small size. Many cameras with interchangeable mounts or adapters can still use these lenses. Sony Venice, ARRI ALEXA Mini LF, Mini and AMIRA cameras can use the M-Mount adapter from Leitz for the cameras.

They represent a very individual style of photography – they have the power to strike a chord, fascinate and surprise. In 1925 the Leitz company defined the 24 x 36 mm mini- ature format with the camera developed by Oskar Barnack. Since then, reportage photographers have used their discreet and fast Leica M cameras to shape our view of the world. “24 x 36” is the title of an ex- hibition of current work by M photographers. This brochure includes some of the images, representing outstanding examples of how Leica cameras can be used to develop a conscious vision and design, to highlight intensive involvement in a theme and to convey personal messages from the heart of everyday life. The photo galleries on the Internet show you how photography is de- veloping right now with the new digital LEICA M8.
