Athenians and Eleusinians in the West Pediment of the Parthenon
ATHENIANS AND ELEUSINIANS IN THE WEST PEDIMENT OF THE PARTHENON (PLATE 95) T HE IDENTIFICATION of the figuresin the west pedimentof the Parthenonhas long been problematic.I The evidencereadily enables us to reconstructthe composition of the pedimentand to identify its central figures.The subsidiaryfigures, however, are rath- er more difficult to interpret. I propose that those on the left side of the pediment may be identifiedas membersof the Athenian royal family, associatedwith the goddessAthena, and those on the right as membersof the Eleusinian royal family, associatedwith the god Posei- don. This alignment reflects the strife of the two gods on a heroic level, by referringto the legendary war between Athens and Eleusis. The recognition of the disjunctionbetween Athenians and Eleusinians and of parallelism and contrastbetween individualsand groups of figures on the pedimentpermits the identificationof each figure. The referenceto Eleusis in the pediment,moreover, indicates the importanceof that city and its majorcult, the Eleu- sinian Mysteries, to the Athenians. The referencereflects the developmentand exploitation of Athenian control of the Mysteries during the Archaic and Classical periods. INSCRIPTIONSFROM ATTICA (PLATE 15: b, c, d) JTN THE course of the years 1947, 1948, and 1949 the undersignedhave made a series of excursions in Attica, as time and their other duties permitted, for the purpose of making squeezes of inscriptions in the outlying areaS-for the collection at the Institute for Advanced Study. Among the many inscriptions already known, a few new pieces turned up which we publish below. We add also a few comments on some previously published texts. 1. Dedication to Pythian Apollo (Plate 15, b) Church of the Panagia, Merenda, southeast of Markopoulo, site of the ancient deme of Myrrhinous. Found in June 1948 lying in front of the church where it had probably been at least since 1929 to judge by the graffito on the face. Probably dis- covered somewhere in the immediate neighborhood. Brought to the Epigraphical Museum, Athens, March 1949; now E.M. 13,120. The stone is a rectangular pillar of Hymettian marble which tapers slightly towards the top. It is broken below and it has been re-worked above at the back to a rough curving surface as if someone had started to make it into a capital for the window column of a church. The sides are dressed with a toothed chisel at the edges and are smooth picked at the center. The back is rough picked. The letters run vertically from top to bottom. The inscription is complete at the right (lower) end, and only a little is missing at the left (top) as the meter shows. The inscribed face is marred by a modern graffito consisting of the name Stelios Katroulis, the date 1929, a cross and a steamboat. -

Murray Schafer at the end of the 1960s, refers to the part of the acoustic environment that is per- ceivable by humans. This study attempts to reconstruct roughly the Eleusinian ‘soundscape’ (the words and the sounds made and heard, and those others who remained unheard) as participants in the Great Mysteries of the two Goddesses may have perceived it in the Classical and post-Classical periods. Unlike other mystery cults (e.g. the Cult of Cybele and Attis) whose soundscapes have been meticulously investigated, the soundscape of Eleusis has received relatively little attention, since the visual aspect of the Megala Mysteria of Demeter and Kore has for decades monopolised the scholarly attention. This study aims at putting things right on this front, and simultaneously look closely at the relational dynamic of the acoustic segment of Eleusis as it can be surmised from the work of well-known orators and philosophers of the first and second centuries ce. Celtic Egyptians: Isis Priests of the Lineage of Scota Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers – the primary creative genius behind the famous British occult group, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn – and his wife Moina Mathers established a mystery religion of Isis in fin-de-siècle Paris. Lawrence Durdin-Robertson, his wife Pamela, and his sister Olivia created the Fellowship of Isis in Ireland in the early 1970s. Although separated by over half a century, and not directly associated with each other, both groups have several characteristics in common. Each combined their worship of an ancient Egyptian goddess with an interest in the Celtic Revival; both claimed that their priestly lineages derived directly from the Egyptian queen Scota, mythical foundress of Ireland and Scotland; and both groups used dramatic ritual and theatrical events as avenues for the promulgation of their Isis cults. The Parisian Isis movement and the Fellowship of Isis were (and are) historically-inaccurate syncretic constructions that utilised the tradition of an Egyptian origin of the peoples of Scotland and Ireland to legitimise their founders’ claims of lineal descent from an ancient Egyptian priesthood. To explore this contention, this chapter begins with brief overviews of Isis in antiquity, her later appeal for Enlightenment Freemasons, and her subsequent adoption by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It then explores the Parisian cult of Isis, its relationship to the Celtic Revival, the myth of the Egyptian queen Scota, and examines the establishment of the Fellowship of Isis. The Parisian mysteries of Isis and the Fellowship of Isis have largely been overlooked by critical scholarship to date; the use of the medieval myth of Scota by the founders of these groups has hitherto been left unexplored. -

India VII The ritualism of primitive Christianity — as now sufficiently shown — sprang from ancient Masonry. The latter was, in its turn, the offspring of the, then, almost dead Mysteries. Of these we have now a few words to say. It is well known that throughout antiquity, besides the popular worship composed of the dead-letter forms and empty exoteric ceremonies, every nation had its secret cult known to the world as the MYSTERIES. Strabo, one among many others, warrants for this assertion. ( Georg, lib. 10) No one received admittance into them save those prepared for it by special training. The neophytes instructed in the upper temples were initiated into the final Mysteries in the crypts. These instructions were the last surviving heirlooms of archaic wisdom, and it is [Page 2] under the guidance of high Initiates that they were enacted. We use the word “enacted” purposely; for the oral instructions at low breath were given only in the crypts, in solemn silence and secrecy. During the public classes and general teachings, the lessons in cosmogony and theogony were delivered in allegorical representation, the modus operandi of the gradual evolution of Kosmos, worlds, and finally of our earth, of gods and men, all was imparted in a symbolical way. The great public performances during the festivals of the Mysteries, were witnessed by the masses and the personified truths worshipped by the multitudes — blindly. -

The Religious Prehistory of Demeter's Eleusinian Mysteries
BERNARD DIETRICH THE RELIGIOUS PREHISTORY OF DEMETER'S ELEUSINIAN MYSTERIES It has often been said that the Greek Mystery cults were unique and that their innermost secrets were well kept and buried with the long suc cession of initiates over a millennium and more I. This was certainly true of the myth and ritual and of points of detail in ceremony and belief, but in general Greek Mystery cults shared some basic features with other religions and therefore belonged to an exceedingly old tradition which antedated the development of new religious concepts in the archaic Greek world. Behind the sophisticated Mysteries of the classical age there lay ideas which had been fundamental to religious thought from prehistoric times concerning the fertility of vegetation and nature in general under the protective guidance of a Nature or Mother goddess. Within that framework great variety could exist from region to region, because, although the most successful cults like those of Samothrace and the Eleusinian Demeter spread their influence to other centres, in essence Mystery cults tended to be localised. In other words, despite common features between all these cults, each major centre had, as it were, something special to offer to ensure the loyalty of generations of worshippers. Also it is easy to overlook the important point that, shared origins apart, the sense of promise and otherworldliness which came to be incorporated in the fully developed Greek Mysteries could only flourish in an age that was receptive to their particular religious message. This meant the archaic age and especially the sixth century, for it provided the most fertile ground on which the Mystery cults could grow to their full potential and which laid the foundation of their tremendous influence in Hellenistic and Roman times.
