keeping families close The impact of Ronald McDonald House Ronald McDonald House offers families a place to call home while their child is receiving critical medical treatment inarea hospitals. For 35 years, our Ronald McDonald Houses have provided a “home-away-from-home” for 52,000 pediatric families in need of comfort and care during a most difficult time in their lives. Annually, 2,000 families come through our doors looking for a quiet place to rest and find solace, including 700 day use families who visit our Central House inside All Children’s Hospital to take a break from the stress of their day. Three Houses in St. Petersburg care for families with children receiving treatment at All Children’s Hospital and nearby clinics (St. Pete East, St. Pete West, and St. Pete Central). The Tampa House, located adjacent to Tampa General Hospital, cares for families with children at Tampa General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital of Tampa, and Shriners Hospital.

At Ronald McDonald House, families receive much more than accommodation; they find a safe, convenient, and home-like environment. Volunteers at each of our Houses strive to engage families and help them through difficult times by offering pet therapy, arts and crafts, bingo, game nights and so much more. Community organizations like Boyd Hill Nature Preserve bring wildlife to our Houses to entertain the families, Amos the Wonder Horse and Lucky Star the Circus Horse make visits, and our dog therapy volunteers visit the St. Pete East House daily to provide the kind of love and comfort that only a dog can give. The stories we hear from families repeatedly state that they do not know what they would have done if Ronald McDonald House had not been available to them. No other charity in our local community provides this service to pediatric families. GLOBAL IMPACT More than 40% of families served at Ronald McDonald Houses have children in the neonatal intensive care unit. At least one RMHC core program provides care for families being served at 89% of top children’s hospitals worldwide. 94% of hospital administrators agree that Ronald McDonald Houses reduce parental stress and 93% agree they reduce costs for families.

Families saved an estimated $700 million in out-of-pocket lodging and meal expenses due to the presence of Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room programs. The benefits and impact of Ronald McDonald House on pediatric families are numerous:

• Positive overall hospital experience • Better perceived quality of life • Proximity to hospitals • Strengthens coping abilities • Higher quality sleep • Provides spaces to play Scholarship Program Extending our impact beyond the House In 2015 we honored 23 high school students from our eleven-county area at a special awards luncheon. These outstanding students received scholarships for a pre-paid two-year Florida college tuition or equivalent tuition to use at an approved accredited institution. The students, along with their families, school counselors, and administrators enjoyed a delicious lunch compliments of the McDonald’s Tampa Bay Co-Op and were recognized for their hard work and perseverance. McDonald’s owner/operators and RMHC Board members attended to honor the recipients and hear about their academic and community achievements.

Love Notes • Spring 2016 2 Counting Their Blessings By Alison Barrick

The Blevins Family has had to bear the weight of the world this past year. Their 18-year-old son Austin desperately needed medical help that could not be found near their home in Worthington, Ohio. Tom Blevins humbly explains that he and his family lost their home, their jobs and their car while struggling to find care for their son. Tom’s wife Jennifer spent hundreds of hours researching treatment options and care providers for Austin after the doctors admitted they had tried everything they could. This tireless research would bring them to All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine (ACH) where they put all their hope into one doctor. Austin Blevins was born with Omphalocele, a birth defect of the abdominal wall leaving his intestines, liver, and other organs protruding through a hole in his belly button. The organs were covered in a thin, nearly transparent sac. Austin spent his first three months of life in the Intensive Care Unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, undergoing numerous surgeries to correct his condition. Following these early surgeries, Austin would be healthy for a long time, and then scar tissue would cause a bowel obstruction requiring more surgery. Austin has endured multiple surgeries in his young life as well as extensive aftereffects without complaint. He keeps a smile on his face despite the two ostomy bags and a feeding tube that are required for sustenance. Last year Austin needed yet another surgery to correct his bowel obstruction, but this time the outcome was different. During the surgery his bowel was nicked three times and he almost died on the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year operating table. His hospital stay lasted nine about 775 babies in the United States are born with an omphalocele. months. He was released for just one week before being readmitted for another two and a half Many babies born with an omphalocele also have other birth defects, such months. Fortunately, the family lived within an hour of the hospital and was able to care for their as heart defects, neural tube defects, and chromosomal abnormalities. son while continuing to work. Despite Austin’s medical condition, Tom and Jennifer were trying to make the best of things; he as a fence installer, she as a heavy equipment supervisor for road construction. Neither of them foresaw that Austin’s illness would cause their world to fall apart, but the bills and time off work during the latest surgery became too much to manage. To make matters worse, after Austin’s last hospital stay, he came home with a large gaping hole where his belly button should be. The doctors explained that they could not stretch the muscles back together to close the wound. They declared there was nothing else they could do for Austin. Tom and Jennifer refused to accept this outcome and began researching doctors all across the country that might be able to help their son. Jennifer was hopeful when she came across Dr. Paul Colombani at ACH. She was optimistic when she learned that he had expertise operating on patients with Austin’s issues, as well as a prestigious resume that included attending to President Ronald Reagan after his assassination attempt. Her mother had relocated to Bradenton, Florida, so it seemed like she had finally found an answer to their prayers. Jennifer drove down to Florida in June 2015 with Austin and his 16-year old brother Dalton. Tom

Love Notes • Spring 2016 8 Love Notes • Spring 2016 8 More than Just a Name on a Wall… Since launching the “Adopt a Room” program in 2014, 39 bedrooms have been adopted in our four Ronald McDonald Houses. This commitment by generous partners has helped care for families staying in these bedrooms for 28,470 nights over the last two years! Other community partners have adopted 10 common rooms in the Houses helping to create spaces where 2,000 families each year share meals, discuss their day and bond with others facing similar challenges.

The companies, families and individuals who are a part of our “Adopt a Room” program help to sustain each House in a significant way by sponsoring all of the families who use the adopted room throughout their stay. But their support provides much more than just a room; it greatly aids in our mission of keeping families close, so they can focus on what is most important – their hospitalized child.

The commitment of our “Adopt a Room” donors is so appreciated but there are still more spaces and families to care for! If you are interested in learning more about our “Adopt-A-Room” program please contact Chelsea White, Development Manager at [email protected].

Love9 NotesLove •Notes Spring • Spring 2016 20169 LEAVING A LEGACY… NO SUPER POWERS REQUIRED

As a supporter of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay (RMHC-TB) and a believer in the mission of creating a home-away-from-home, you take time out of your life to give to families with a hospitalized child. In leaving a legacy, you ensure that your desire to support families in need continues long after you’re gone. We understand that your commitment to take care of our families does not negate the desire to take care of your own. “Keeping Families Close” is what we do and that is important for your family as well. There are simple ways to provide support to RMHC-TB while still ensuring that you take care of those close to your heart. 1. INCLUDE a gift to RMHC-TB as a percentage of your residual estate, ensuring your donation is proportionate to your estate size no matter how it changes over the years. 2. NAME RMHC-TB as a contingency benefactor so a donation is made only if named beneficiaries are no longer living. 3. LEAVE highly taxed assets to RMHC-TB since we are a tax exempt organization, alleviating the the tax impact on your estate. 4. LEAVE your gift in honor of a family member as a way of acknowledging your continued love for them.

Your tax or financial planning professional can help you decide on the best fit for your estate and your plan can always change as your life moves forward. What matters most is that your legacy is a reflection of the actions you have taken throughout your lifetime. The families we serve are so grateful for your support today and RMHCTB would be honored to help your legacy live on into tomorrow. Guy Harvey was on hand to present awards to the winners in each category (trout, redfish, snook, Grand Slam & most fish caught), and mingled with the guests while they enjoyed some tasty dishes at the RumFish Grill after a long day of fishing. Sponsored anglers received an overnight stay at the Guy Harvey Outpost. All anglers received a fabulous goody bag & custom shirt donated by Majestic, and their choice of Bimini Bay’s SaltLife sunglasses featuring the latest in water repellent technology. The event got off to a great start on Thursday evening with an angler social at RumFish Grill. On Friday, anglers were shuttled to Loggerhead Marina where their boats departed for a day of fishing with some of the best fishing captains in the state. Thanks to our generous donors and participants we raised $84,000 to benefit the families served by RMH & Athletes for Hearts. We expect this year to be even bigger and better! Each year, Alan Brown and Brian Sloan from Southwest Airlines put on the Hook, Line & Sinker Fishing Tournament to benefit RMH. Together they manage all the logistics involved in running a deep water tournament on the East Coast each year for SWA employees from across the country. This is a huge feat for just two people who also work regular jobs at our Tampa airport. Last year their tournament raised $21,250 as net proceeds of the event, a remarkable achievement. What’s even more amazing is that these proceeds pay for 265 family nights! We are most grateful to have these wonderful friends, who consistently support us year after year.

Suncoast Credit Union has been a very generous partner to us since 1998, supporting our events, encouraging their employees to volunteer, and raising funds for us through various fundraisers. Last year, they pledged $100,000 to renovate the St. Pete East House kitchen. As you can see from the photos in this issue, those funds have been put to good use creating a more inviting and polished kitchen for our families and meal groups to enjoy.
