The interview took place in Spencer's home in Pasadena, California, and was conducted by Paul Karlstro for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. This transcript has been lightly edited for readability by the Archives of American Art. The reader should bear in mind that they are reading a transcript of spoken, rather than written, prose. Interview PAUL KARLSTROM: The Smithsonian Institution, an interview with John Spencer, on September 1, 1994 at the subject's home in Pasadena [California]. The interviewer is Paul Karlstrom and the subject, or the main subject, is the—Dean Cornwell, with whom John Spencer worked on the Los Angeles Public Library murals back in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s. But as we talk about that, we'll also get into a little more—uh, some stories about Mr. Spencer's experiences and his ongoing relationship with Dean Cornwell. Anyway, John, it seems to me there are three topics that we might try to cover briefly in the time we have this morning: the public library murals, of course, but then your old role assisting Cornwell with the murals and your relationship with him that developed, and maybe something about him from your experience. -

This comes with a magnificent account of the year’s exhibitions in Stockbridge and across the nation, educational and community programs, scholarship to advance illustration art, and curatorial achievements. This remarkable Museum does all of this and more, inspired by the values Norman Rockwell depicted in his iconic paintings. His works portray freedom, tolerance, humanity and kindness, integrity, honesty, and authenticity along with a joyfulness and celebration of life. These values inspire our visitors and staff alike. The Museum concluded its fiscal year on June 30, 2012 in a strong position. As noted a year ago, we eliminated our long-term debt. This year we are pleased to report that we have no short-term Norman Rockwell Museum President Anne Morgan borrowing on our balance sheet. Annual attendance at the Museum has generated good revenue, and and Chairman Thomas we saw nationwide interest and attendance grow for our traveling exhibition program as well. L. Pulling. USDI/NPS Registration Form 1 Ambler Heights Historic District Cuyahoga County, OH NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET ================================================================== SECTION 7 ================================================================== NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION The Ambler Heights Historic District is an early twentieth century suburban residential development of approximately 73 acres, platted in its current form in 1900. Development began about 1903 and was largely completed by 1927. The District is located mostly in the southwest corner of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, an inner-ring suburb of Cleveland; a small portion of the District is located within the boundaries of the City of Cleveland. It is an example of the successful marketing of “garden city” living to the wealthy during the first stage of the suburbanization of Cleveland. It consists today of 67 original, single-family, architect-designed private homes, one original home which has been converted to use by a retirement community (but continues to be a contributing resource) and 13 non-contributing homes. The original homes and the District are well-preserved and have experienced relatively little alteration since their construction; they therefore may be said to have integrity in terms of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. The District is located approximately five miles east of downtown Cleveland. It is bounded by Cedar Glen Parkway (north), South Overlook Road (east), North Park Boulevard (south) and Ambleside Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard (west). It is located on the rise of a gradual hill leading from the City of Cleveland at its lower elevation to the various “Heights” suburbs (including Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights) at its higher elevations; this ledge of land forms the western limits of the Portage escarpment of the Allegheny Mountains. -

Arrangement The photographic morgue of the Hearst newspaper the Los Angeles Examiner consists of the photographic print and negative files maintained by the newspaper from its inception in 1903 until its closing in 1962. The Fabulous El Morocco
The Fabulous El Morocco El Morocco (sometimes nicknamed Elmo or Elmer) was a 20th-century Manhattan nightclub frequented by the rich and famous from the 1930s until the decline of cafe society in the late 1950s. It was famous for its blue zebra-stripe motif. In 1931, John Perona (born Eriane Giovanni Perona in Chiaverano in the Province of Turin, Italy), an Italian immigrant, with Martín de Alzaga opened El Morocco as a speakeasy at 154 East 54th Street, on the south side of 54th Street in the middle of the block between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue, where the Citigroup Center now stands. After prohibition was repealed, it became one of the most popular establishments in New York City. Its regular clientele consisted of fashionable society, politicians, and entertainers. Part of what made the club the 'place to be' was the photographs taken by Jerome Zerbe which were always in the news the next day. Everyone always knew from the background zebra stripes on the banquettes where the celebrities had been. The neighborhood started changing after World War II, and eventually Perona moved El Morocco to a four-storey townhouse at 307 East 54th Street, on the north side of the street near the corner of Second Avenue in 1960. Perona died in 1961, and his son, Edwin took over the proprietorship. Later that year, Edwin Perona sold the club to John Mills, who owned it for three years. It was then owned by Maurice Uchitel (1964–70) and Sheldon Hazeltine. Before taking over El Morocco, Uchitel owned the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach for several years.
