Degree College, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. ABSTRACT: Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh is known for Konda Dora tribe. Konda Dora tribe is divided into a number of clans such as Korra, Killo, Swabi, Ontalu, Kimud, Pangi, Paralek, Mandelek, Bidaka, Somelunger, Surrek, Goolorigune olijukula etc., Konda Dora are very dominant in the district. Frequent field trips were conducted in Konda Dora rich areas to collect the Traditional Botanical Knowledge and Ethno- medicinal plants used by the Konda Dora. Because of modernization, all the ethno-botanical knowledge is declining day by day, so there is an urgent need to document the knowledge of ethnic people. Here 68 plant species belong to 63 genus of ethno- medicinal value were recorded from Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, India. INTRODUCTION Tribal communities are considered to be forest dwellers living in harmony with their environment. They depend heavily on plants and plant products for making food, forage, fire, beverages and drinks, dye stuff and colouring matters, edible and non-edible oils, construction of dwellings, making household implements, in religious ceremonies, magico-religious rituals etc. a close association with nature has enabled tribal people to observe and scrutinize the rich flora and fauna around them for developing their own traditional knowledge and over the years, they have developed a great deal of knowledge on the use of plants and plant products as herbal remedies for various ailments. -

This Cave is fast becoming a hot tourist‟s destination offering great adventurous opportunity to the tourists in the Eastern Ghats. The cave is located in the Ananthagiri hills of the Eastern Ghats region near Visakhapattanam and is made of limestone. The emotion of thrill heightens after entering the cave. The entrance has a narrow vertical opening and is well lit. Due to its location in the sub-equatorial region, dripping of water from the cave roofs occurs almost throughout the year. The formation of stalactites and stalagmites create wonderful phenomena specially found in this cave. The conspicuous pillars formed due to the joining of the roof and the floors are an awe-inspiring creativity of the creator of this world. Various viruses and bacteria are in the cave interior along with different other creatures. The Borra cave helps the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, India, to earn huge economic benefits for the sake of tourism industry. Tatipudi Reservoir Project was constructed across Gosthani River, With a water spread area of 2600 ha at FRL receiving water from catchment area .The project is aimed to irrigate a total ayacut of 15,378 acres (62 km2) in Vizianagaram District and to provide drinking water to Visakhapatnam City. The Project utilizes 3.325 tmcft of the available water and the reservoir storage capacity is about 3 tmcft. The Gosthani rises in the Ananthagiri Hills of the Eastern Ghats and flows through the Borra Caves which flows down in the form of a river passing 120 km before joining the Bay of Bengal through an estuary near Bheemunipatnam. The Reservoir is about 10 Kms from S Kota. The reservoir has been identified under National Wetland Conservation Programme by Ministry of Environment and Forests (Govt. Of India). The reservoir supports rich biodiversity including fishes and birds. -

Ramesh Chandra Phani Cyient Limited, Plot 11, Software Layout, Infocity, Madhapur, Hyderabad ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Carbonate rocks are often of economic importance depending on their CaO content. A calcareous rock containing CaO >52%is predominantly calcareous andis considered as high-grade ore for various industrial purposes. A deposit in Andhra Pradesh, Borra area is endowed with such high-grade resources of crystalline carbonatite, in view of their utility in glass industry, is presented in this paper. Analytical results of 10 samples from this area, show that these carbonatite/calcite resources contain an average of 53% CaO and are very well suitable as raw material not only in in glass industry but also in others. A systematic investigation to estimate the resources and proper environment- friendly mining is indeed necessary. Keywords: High-grade carbonate, Borra, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION The Borra calcite deposits were discovered when British geologist, William King unveiled huge caves in karstic terrainin 1807, extending for few kilometres underground, located about 90km north of Visakhapatnam in the Anantagiri hill ranges of Eastern Ghats (800-1300 meters MSL) in Andhra Pradesh. The carbonate rocks of Borra contain enriched CaCO 3(calcite) and the deposits predominantly contain crystalline calcite. Along with other natural raw materials like quartz, silica sand and dolomite, CaCO 3 (limestone/calcite) is proportionately used as an important ingredient in glass making. -

CHARACTERIZATION OF UREOLYTIC BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM LIMESTONE CAVES OF SARAWAK AND EVALUATION OF THEIR EFFICIENCY IN BIOCEMENTATION By ARMSTRONG IGHODALO OMOREGIE A thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (Research) Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY 2016 ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to isolate, identify and characterise bacteria that are capable of producing urease enzyme, from limestone cave samples of Sarawak. Little is known about the diversity of bacteria inhabiting Sarawak’s limestone caves with the ability of hydrolyzing urea substrate through urease for microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) applications. Several studies have reported that the majority of ureolytic bacterial species involved in calcite precipitation are pathogenic. However, only a few non-pathogenic urease-producing bacteria have high urease activities, essential in MICP treatment for improvement of soil’s shear strength and stiffness. Enrichment culture technique was used in this study to target highly active urease- producing bacteria from limestone cave samples of Sarawak collected from Fairy and Wind Caves Nature Reserves. These isolates were subsequently subjected to an increased urea concentration for survival ability in conditions containing high urea substrates. Urea agar base media was used to screen for positive urease producers among the bacterial isolates. All the ureolytic bacteria were identified with the use of phenotypic and molecular characterizations. For determination of their respective urease activities, conductivity method was used and the highly active ureolytic bacteria isolated comparable with control strain used in this study were selected and used for the next subsequent experiments in this study. -

COURSE IMPRESSIONS | The Harvard GHP 298 Winter Session Trip brought ten masters and doctoral students of public health to India to examine the country’s framework for addressing non-communicable disease in partnership with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI). Students also learned about the broad array of community-based interventions targeting chronic conditions, primarily hypertension and diabetes, that PHFI and the UDAY Foundation have launched in recent years. After an initial briefing at PHFI’s headquarters in New Delhi, students visited program sites in Visakhapatnam (or Vizag) on the southeast coast and Sonipat to the north of the National Capital Region. Over a period of two weeks, trip participants engaged in a mix of rural and urban site visits around these areas. The following is an account of the 2017 Winter Session Trip, beginning with background information on the partner organization in India as well as the current burden of chronic disease in the country. The itinerary for the trip and the host organization programs are reviewed here, as well as suggestions for future moderations of both the Harvard course and the interventions utilized by PHFI and UDAY. Overview of PHFI The Public Health Foundation of India is a public-private initiative to improve the health of India. Launched by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2006, PHFI is an independent foundation that aims to improve the country’s institutional capacity for public health. This takes the form of policy development and implementation nationwide, as well as research and training for clinicians and public health professionals. PHFI’s initiative to combat the rising burden of 1 chronic disease is an innovative large-scale community-based effort not seen elsewhere in the country’s health policy.
