These words of Jesus are a call to radical love, which is the ultimate dimension Tue Feb 25 8:00 am of our life. Take at face value, the message of Jesus is pure folly. A lot of people, including biblical scholars, priests, nuns, Wed Feb 26 8:15 am preachers and, at times even , can make subtle arguments to convince us that these words cannot be taken at face value. Thu Feb 27 8:15 am Well, I cannot buy that. That is exactly what makes Jesus unique. The fact that I cannot put these words into practice as they are, Fri Feb 28 8:00 am that they overwhelm me, that they look impossible and crazy to

The Bishop’s Corner Bulletin – Sunday, 23rd February 2020

Dear Fellow-Catholics,

"The beloved Amazon region stands before the world in all its splendour, its drama and its mystery." This is how “Querida Amazonia”, a post-synodal apostolic exhortation by Pope Francis, which has just been published begins. The Pope emphasizes that he wants to "express the resonance" that the synod created in him. He clarifies that he does not intend to replace or repeat the Final Document of the Synod, but encourages reading it in full, in the hope that the whole Church will be inspired and enriched, and that the Church in the Amazon will try to implement it. Francis shares his dreams of the Amazon, whose fate should all be disturbing, because this land is also our land. The Pope formulates four great dreams: an Amazon region that fights for the rights of the poorest, defends its cultural wealth, jealously preserves its irresistible natural beauty, and finally, that Christian communities would be able to engage and "embody" the Amazon.

The document emphasizes that a real ecological approach always becomes a social approach and warns against "conservationism" which can easily turn ecology into ecologism. According to the Pope, economic activities that intensify destruction, murder and corruption deserve to be called "injustice and crime." After John Paul II, he repeats that globalization cannot become a new colonialism.

"Beloved Amazonia" also highlights communities that are full of life and in which lay people should perform important functions. The Pope devotes a special place to the strength and gifts of women. He admits that in the Amazon some communities survive only thanks to the presence of strong and generous women. He warns, however, that the Church cannot be reduced to her functional structures. This would mean that recognizing the role of women would lead to their ordaining to the priesthood. According to the Pope, we must oppose the clericalisation of women, while accepting their contribution in a feminine way in which we see an extension of "Mary's strength and tenderness." Francis encourages the creation of new women's services, which would have a decisive impact on the life of the community. His dream for the Amazon is that it will be the place that the Gospel triumphs over technocracy.

During a meeting with American bishops who are in Rome on an ad limina visit, the Pope admitted that he is amazed at the reactions to his exhortation. "It was a synod on the Amazon. Some wanted me to comment on celibacy but that was not this synod’s topic." Have a great Sunday, last Sunday of Carnival, and a blessed week, with an Ash Wednesday in its middle!
