Davis (1-0) pitched a season-long six innings, retiring the side in order in four separate innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts. His second career home run extended a 9-3 Pensacola lead in the third inning. The Blue Wahoos (21-8 second half, 51-46 overall) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning against Jacksonville right-hander Kolton Mahoney (3-5). Left fielder TJ Friedl hit a one-out double to left-center field and scored on first baseman Mitch Nay’s RBI single. In the bottom of the second inning, Pensacola scored six runs. Third baseman Taylor Sparks hit a leadoff single and stole second base before center fielder Jose Siri’s two-out walk. Friedl hit an infield single to Mahoney, whose errant throw to first base scored Sparks. Mahoney’s wild pitch scored Siri. After Nay walked, second baseman Shed Long hit an RBI infield single, before right fielder Aristides Aquino hit a three-run home run to left field for a 7-0 lead. The Jumbo Shrimp (10-20, 38-58) scored against Davis in the top of the third inning. Second baseman Justin Twine hit a leadoff double to center field, and catcher Sharif Othman hit a two-run home run to the center-field batter’s eye. Two batters later, right fielder Braxton Lee hit his first home run of the season to the right-center field to make it 7-3. Jacksonville right-hander Reilly Hovis allowed Davis’s home run in the third inning and three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with catcher Chris Okey’s solo home run and Nay’s two-run single to make it 12-3. The Jumbo Shrimp tallied four runs in the final three innings off right-hander Wyatt Strahan, who earned his first save. Third baseman Brian Schales hit a seventh-inning leadoff double and scored on Twine’s RBI single. Center fielder Monte Harrison tied the team lead with his 13th home run in the eighth inning. Othman and pinch-hitter Eric Jagielo each had ninth-inning RBI singles. UPCOMING SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS DATE OPP. Guerrero was placed on Miami’s disabled list on July 5, retroactive to July 4, with a left lumbar strain. Prior to his injury, Guerrero was 1-2 with a 4.28 ERA in 41 relief outings for the Marlins, with 54 strikeouts in his 40 innings of work. This is the first year for Guerrero in the majors with the Marlins, and he did appear in one game for the San Diego Padres in 2016. That summer he was traded to the Marlins along with Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea in exchange for Jarred Cosart, Carter Capps, Luis Castillo, and Josh Naylor. Guerrero pitched parts of the last two seasons for Jacksonville, going 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA with four saves in 12 outings in 2016. With the Jumbo Shrimp last year, Guerrero was 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 17 relief outings. Guerrero, 27, is a native of Boca Chica, Colombia, and grew up on the small island of Isla Tierra Bomba. Guerrero’s story of going from the island by boat to the only baseball field in the area and then walking two hours through a snake-infested jungle to get back home made headlines this offseason. Guerrero worked a scoreless seventh inning in Saturday’s game at Pensacola. Harrison and O’Brien Booming Homers: Jacksonville’s Monte Harrison and Peter O’Brien are tied for the Marlins organizational lead in home runs, with each slugger hitting 13 so far in 2018. O”Brien has combined to hit 20 between his time with the Jumbo Shrimp and Double-A Tulsa before his trade to the Marlins. Biscuits in Town: Bring on the Biscuits. Tonight begins the final of three series between the clubs in 2018. The Jumbo Shrimp won three of five games at Montgomery in mid-May, while the Biscuits swept the Jumbo Shrimp their last visit here from late June to early July in a six-game series. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have nine players who were listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (1), Isan Diaz (7), RHP Nick Neidert (8), OF Brian Miller (10), Merandy Gonzalez (13), Joe Dunand (16), Jordan Yamamoto (19) Robert Dugger (22) and John Norwood (30). Yesterday rain and lightning suspended the second game of the series with no score in the bottom of the first, and then in Monday’s resumption of the contest Jacksonville won by a 9-5 score. Jacksonville right-handed relief pitcher Jose Pena (2-3) earned the win, while BayBears right-handed relief pitcher Samil De Los Santos (1-1) took the loss. Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Miguel Del Pozo worked the final two innings in scoreless fashion to earn the save. The BayBears broke through with the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth, when Unroe reached on a fielder’s choice to score Zach Gibbons from third to put the lead at 1- 0. • San Diego Padres: 3 Players to Watch During Spring Training
San Diego Padres: 3 Players to Watch During Spring Training Author : Spring Training is upon us. Pitchers and catchers have reported, position players are filing in, and everyone is eager to hit the grind and get ready for Opening Day. After finishing dead last in the National League West last season, the San Diego Padres aren't expected to do much once again in 2017. That's not to say they don't have some exciting players to watch heading into the regular season. Here are three guys that stand out to me, and should have a lot of eyes on them as April approaches. 1. Manuel Margot: Last year, he started the Futures game for the World team at PetCo Park. This year, he might be taking the same field, except as a member of the San Diego Padres. Their home opener isn't until April 7th against the San Francisco Giants, but Margot will have his eyes on making the 25-man roster well before then. The 22-year-old excelled in Triple-A last season, slashing .304/.351/.426 and stealing 30 bags in 124 games. His performance earned him a September call-up, and he went on to play ten games with the Padres. He hit 1 / 2 .243 with a pair of steals in his first cup of coffee and showed off his game-changing speed in the outfield. With the Padres limited outfield depth, Margot has a good chance of winning a starting job this Spring and is hands down one of the top players to watch on the Padres.

  • Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012
Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

MEDIA CLIPS – Oct. 29, 2018 Rockies decline Parra's option for 2019 Do-Hyoung Park | MLB.com | Oct. 30th, 2018 The Rockies have declined a $12 million club option on outfielder Gerardo Parra for the 2019 season, exercising a $1.5 million buyout on Tuesday to make him a free agent. Parra appeared in 142 games in 2018 but started only 97 of them as a platoon outfielder, primarily in left field. He hit .284/.342/.372 in the final year of a three-year, $27.5 million contract inked prior to the 2016 season. The two-time National League Gold Glove Award winner lost playing time toward the end of the regular season when David Dahl returned from injury and Matt Holliday made his return to Colorado in August. The left-handed-hitting Parra, 31, struggled to live up to expectations in his first year with Colorado in 2016, hitting .253 with a .671 OPS, but he rebounded in '17 with career highs in average (.309) and RBIs (71). He spent the first five-plus seasons of his 10-year career with the D-backs before brief stints with Milwaukee and Baltimore prior to his arrival in Denver. Still, the Rockies will entertain the idea of agreeing to a less expensive deal with Parra, who showed value as a pinch- hitter this season by batting .393/.433/.536 with one homer, one double and two walks in 30 plate appearances. Franchise mainstay Carlos Gonzalez and Holliday are also free agents again for the Rockies. Colorado has two starting outfield positions locked up for 2019 between Dahl and three-time All-Star Charlie Blackmon, who in April was extended through the '21 season with player options for '22 and '23.
