Information gained is delivered impersonally to clubhouses. But what if there was someone who was not only highly skilled at poring over analytical information, but was also a former big league player? That's what the Reds believe they have in former reliever Caleb Cotham, who was named their assistant pitching coach on Jan. 2. "I think he's going to bring a great deal to not only our pitching staff but personally to me as well," Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson said. "He's got a really good handle on some of the analytical information that's out there." Cotham, 31, did not have a distinguished Major League career, with a 7.15 ERA over 35 appearances in two seasons.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings August 21, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1990-Billy Hatcher becomes the last Red to double four times in one game, matching a club record, during a victory, 8-1, over the Cubs MLB.COM Castillo flashes potential in grinding start By Jaylon Thompson / MLB.com | August 20th, 2017 + 2 COMMENTS ATLANTA -- Luis Castillo continued to strengthen his case to become a potential frontline starter for the Reds. He didn't have the best command of his pitches, but he battled to limit the Braves to a pair of runs in the Reds 8-1 loss on Sunday at SunTrust Park. Castillo was clean during his first trip through the Braves' lineup. However, he quickly accelerated his pitch count as the Braves fouled off some quality pitches. He also ran into some trouble in the third inning as he allowed two runs on a double by Braves outfielder Nick Markakis that split the gap in right field. "I didn't have my best stuff today, but I went out there and competed," Castillo said through an interpreter. "I made my mistakes and I paid for it." Although he took the loss in his shortest start of the season, Castillo made sure to keep the Reds in the game. He limited the Braves to four hits and racked up eight strikeouts, five of which came in the first eight batters of the game. "I went out there and did the best I could to go deeper in the game," Castillo said. "After that mistake, I think I pitched really well." According to Statcast™, Castillo balanced his two-seam fastball, which topped out at 97 mph, with a strong changeup inside to right-handed hitters.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings April 6, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1912-The Reds play their first game at Redland Field, losing to the Red Sox, 13-1. During the game, workmen were sodding the area in deep right field in the yet unfinished ball park MLB.COM Votto homers to back dominant Finnegan By Mark Sheldon and Todd Zolecki / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | 1:06 AM ET + 55 COMMENTS CINCINNATI -- After pitchers Brandon Finnegan and Jerad Eickhoff exchanged zeros for 6 1/2 innings, Joey Votto's leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh snapped the scoreless deadlock and helped give the Reds a 2-0 victory over the Phillies on Wednesday night at Great American Ball Park. Adam Duvall followed Votto with a double to left field, and Zack Cozart's two-out RBI single scored a second insurance run against Eickhoff. "Joey got everyone excited with the homer, and they had been pounding him and throwing the ball close to him. When they came in with the breaking ball on the second pitch, Joey got it," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "They're all important, but that second run certainly made a huge difference for us." The two-run inning made a winner out of Finnegan, who endured a rocky top of the first following a 50-minute rain delay with a walk and two-out single. But he retired his final 19 batters in a row, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine over seven frames on 88 pitches. More > Eickhoff finished with two earned runs on five hits, one walk and six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
