G. S. 25453 ARGUMENT

Act I opens in Paris, during the stormy days of the French Revolution. The women engaged in the laundry of Caterina (popularly known as "Madame Sans- Gene," from her fearlessness) are chattering exitedly to an outside accompaniment of rifle-fire and cannon-shots. Caterina herself bursts in, greatly exasperated by a rough adventure with a. company of soldiers, which she humorously recounts. Shouts of victory on the street. attract the crowd that had followed Caterina; she and her assistants go to work vigorously, sKe meanwhile telling the police-agent, Fouche, of her romantic betrothal to her village friend Lefebvre. Again the uproar of the victorious rabble, who crowd into the shop, interrupts the conversation. Then Caterina is left alone for a moment, but is surprised by the abrupt entrance of the wounded Austrian officer Neippei^g; she takes pity on him and allows him to hide from his pursuers in her own chamber, which she locks, pocketting the key. Admitting her lover and a squad of soldiers searching for Neipperg, the locked chamber-door arouses Lefebvre's suspicions; maddened by jealousy he snatches the key, unlocks the door, and rushes in. In a moment he reappears, pale and disturbed, and announces with a forced laugh that he had been victimized —that there is no one in the chamber; but in an aside to Caterina he asks why she had not told him that a dead man was within. This is a feint to learn Caterina's real feelings for the fugitive; once satisfied that she is innocent, Lefebvre tells her sotto voce that the man is still alive and that he wishes him no ill, but wiU arrange for his flight that night. The curtain falls on the complete reconciliation of the lovers.

Act II plays in the chiteau of Compiegne, nineteen years later. Napoleon, now at the height of his power, has given his trusty general, Lefebvre, the title of Duke of Danzig, and bestowed on him and his Duchess (Madame Sans-Gine) the magnificent chdteau. The scene opens with the dancing-master, the valet, and the tailor, all poking fun at the absent ducal pair—an attitude changed, on Caterina's appearance, for one of comical obsequiousness. Caterina is still the same fearless daughter of the people, despite her elevation in rank, and the scene with the three flunkeys who have been summoned to teach her "court manners" •is delightful in its naturalness. Lefebvre happens in, and tells her that the Emperor is so displeased with her lack of dignity that he has proposed to him (Lefebvre) to get a speedy divorce. Caterina, at first dumbfounded, finds her voice, and tells her— husband what he ought to have answered when Napoleon made the proposition ^to the huge joy of Lefebvre, who informs her that is just what he did say ! She is delirious with delight; they are making love in the most approved fashion, when Gelsomino (the valet) enters to announce the Count of Neipperg, who comes to bid them farewell, being dismissed by the Emperor, who suspects Neipperg's passion for the Empress. The hopeless lover insists, in spite of all dissuasion, that he must see the Empress once more before departing. Enter Fouche (now Minister of Police) to warn Caterina that "Their Most Serene and Royal Highnesses" are about to pay her a visit, and that her deportment needs great amendment; ending with the hint, "Be proud enough, and change the subject when I take my snuff." Caterina angrily hastens out to prepare herself; enter the court ladies, followed by Their Highnesses, who sourly protest at Caterina's absence. She appears, nervous and hampered by her finery, and naively excuses herself for her tardiness; but her indignation mounts at the hardly concealed derision of the Court, and finally bursts into flame; her plain-spoken opinion of her visitors sends them off vowing

2S4S3 V vengeance, and sneering as the chamberlain appears to say that 'the Emperor desires the Duchess of Danzig to come to him at once; the latter faces the ordeal unafraid. *

In Act III Napoleon, in the imperial cabinet, receives Fouche's report of Neipperg's feigned departure; after an interlude between the court ladies and Fouche, the Duchess of Danzig is announced. She enters slowly; the others go out, leaving her alone with the Emperor. He accuses her of covering his court with ridicule, and asks whether her husband has spoken with her about it. Caterina replies that Lefebvre would not exchange her for the proudest princess in the world; -defying Napoleon's wrath, she tells him how his army has been scorned—in her person; how she, the lowly vivandiere, has undergone with his brave troops all the terrors and privations of his campaigns, and wins his heart by the recital; then, as an anticlimax, tells of her bad debts as a laundress in Paris, and finishes by presenting an unpaid bill run up by.Napoleon himself, then an ill-paid lieutenant. Old memories completely soften the chieftain's heart, and he ends by kissing the scar of a wound on Caterina's arm, and then saluting her lips reverently with his own, thus wiping out the lieutenant's score. He summons Roustan to fetch an officer as escort for the Duchessj Roustan starts to obey, but halts to tell his master that the secret door is ajar. All are silent at Napoleon's command, and the lights are turned down; Mme. de Boulow enters stealthily to see if the coast is clear, then ushers in Neipperg and with him approaches the Empress's door. Napoleon grimly seizes Neipperg by the shoulder as he is on the point of entering the apartment; the Count is about to be dragged away when Caterina interposes, asserting his innocence; but Napoleon's will triumphs.

Act IV opens on the same scene. The lights burn low; Caterina is alone, absorbed in sad thoughts. When Lefebvre, chosen by Napoleon to execute the death- sentence on Neipperg, comes in, she pleads with him in vain; Napoleon himself enters when Lefebvre has departed, his face and bearing showing signs of an inward struggle between doubt of Neipperg's guilt, on the one hand, and a thirst for ven- geance, on the other. He tries to make Caterina, who swears that she knows nothing,- confess a knowledge of clandestine meetings between Neipperg and the Empress; suddenly changing his tone to one of harsh command, he insists that Caterina shall knock at the Empress's door, then and there, and announce Neipperg again. Caterina, agonized by conflicting emotions, finally obeys; the door opens slightly, and through the opening appears a hand with a -packet, the voice of the Empress saying: "Give this to him—and my farewell!" Napoleon seizes the packet, with astonishment reads the address, "His Majesty, the Emperor of Austria," hesitates, then breaks the seals and reads: "Honoured and dear father, since the minister of police opens my letters, I am taking recourse to the Count of Neipperg, to send this by him in secret. His assiduity troubles me and the Emperor. Entertain him in Vienna."

The tragic tension relaxes ; Napoleon breathes freely ; Caterina is beside herself with joy. The room is flooded with the light of the rising sun, and from outside is heard the gay song of huntsmen assembling for the chase. In the presence of the erstwhile scornful court ladies the Emperor extols the loving loyalty of his faithful friend, Madame Sans-G^ne, and kisses her hand. Tableau.
