Gurnemanz i els seus com­ panys s'interessen per la salut d'Amfortas -ferit per Klingsor amb la llança sagrada- que baixa al llac disposat a banyar-se per tal d'alleugerir el seu mal. Gurnemanz sap que només una cosa, que no vol descobrir, pot guarir l'ancià. Kundry, una estranya figura femenina, porta un flascó balsàmic que fa arribar al rei Amfortas; la seva agressivitat desperta reserves en els escuders de Gurnemanz. Tanmateix, aquest sol-licita la compassió dels presents al-ludint a l'estat lamentable en què fou trobada per Titurel, el pare d' Amfor­ tas, i a la precarietat de la vida de Kundry. Un cop Amfortas ha estat banyat i alleugerit pel bàlsam de Kundry, Gurnemanz passa a LACLAUÉS relatar la història del calze i la llança de Crist, lliurats per a la seva custòdia a Titurel per la qual cosa fundà l'Orde dels Cavallers del Graal. De sobte, ens tro­ bem al bell mig d'un bosc, on les noies-flor rodegen Parsifal i n'inten­ ten la seducció. Com que aquestes no poden res contra ell, és Kundry, transformada en una bellesa espectacular, qui crida Parsifal pel seu nom. La dona aprofita el fet que coneix molt bé la infantesa de l'heroi i entendreix el jove; en el mateix moment de l'inici del bes fatídic, Parsifal recorda el dolor d' Amfortas i la sagrada missió a què ha estat cridat; Kundry també recorda el càstig a què està sotmesa i la necessitat que té de trobar algú que se li resisteixi per tal de veure's alliberada. Klingsor apareix amb intenció de destruir Parsifal, però el jove li agafa la llança i fa el signe de la creu de manera que fa desaparèixer el mag i el seu castell.     DRUMUL CĂTRE SPECTACOLUL IDEAL: PARSIFAL DE RICHARD WAGNER LA BAYREUTH LUCIAN SINIGAGLIA APOGEUL TEATRULUI ILUZIONIST Într-o lume prozaică, Wagner a dăruit lumii artistice şi, în egală măsură, şi-a dăruit lui însuşi teatrul iluziilor. Teatrul Festivalelor din Bayreuth a fost creat după ideile lui Wagner. Spre deosebire de ilustrul său susţinător, Ludwig al II-lea, care se zăvorâse într-un tărâm al himerelor, Wagner s-a dovedit a fi un om cu un simţ desăvârşit al realităţii. În 1876, din balconul templului artistic de pe Colina Verde, trompetele au intonat pentru prima oară un motiv muzical din Aurul Rinului, invitând publicul să asiste la prima execuţie integrală a Tetralogiei Inelul Nibelungului. În lucrarea Das Kunstwerk der Zukunft (Opera de artă a viitorului, publicată în 1850), compozitorul a anticipat, prin proiecţia teoretică a construcţiei teatrale a viitorului, trăsăturile Teatrului Festivalelor de la Bayreuth. Unul dintre marile idealuri wagneriene, acela de a construi o sală cu cele mai bune caracteristici optice şi acustice, în care totul trebuie să slujească numai înţelegerii a ceea ce se întâmplă pe scenă, fusese îndeplinit. Menirea a fost aceea de „a-l determina pe spectator să se afunde în dramă, în timp ce actorii sunt absorbiţi de rolurile lor.     Puccini’s La fanciulla del West - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are sixty recordings in the catalogue but only four of those are studio-made. Discounting Puccini’s first, tentative efforts, the comparative neglect of La fanciulla del West is matched only by La rondine, which has also been given only four studio recordings and even fewer live performances. They were both composed in the middle of Puccini’s creative maturity after the premieres of the “Big Three”, yet have struggled to maintain a foothold in the operatic repertoire. There are reasons for that, but devotees of both operas are puzzled by their neglect. Fanciulla could hardly have a more auspicious premiere, being launched in 1910 on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera starring no less a lead singer than the greatest tenor of all time, Enrico Caruso, alongside the great dramatic soprano Emmy Destinn, both in roles created by Puccini especially for them – and for good measure, Pasquale Amato was Jack Rance, Toscanini conducting. Time machine, anybody? Although I do not share Puccini's belief that Fanciulla is his greatest work it contains a wealth of lovely music, not least big, well-known arias and some tender love music. It's true that the Americanisms - everyone bawling "Hello!" and randomly singing “Dooda day!” - and the rather ghastly, patronising depiction of Native Americans going "Ugh!" are rather grating and even embarrassing to a modern audience, and there is more than a hint of sentimentality about the plot, but it can be hugely enjoyable when performed by a great cast.

Und sobald dieses Wort gefallen ist, entfaltet es eine erstaunliche Wirkung: Die heftigste Debatte verwandelt sich in einen angeregten Austausch von Erinnerungen, die Meinungsver­ schiedenheiten weichen dem Wunsch, den anderen von den unvergesslichen Opernabenden mitzuteilen, die man erlebt hat. Jeder von uns hütet einen solchen Schatz von Erinnerungen: Bei vielen gehört schon der erste Opern­ besuch dazu, manchmal ist es das Erleben großer Sänger oder Dirigenten, manchmal das Kennenlernen eines Meisterwerks oder die Überwältigungs­ wirkung eines Bühneneffekts, manchmal aber auch eine Sternstunde, in der alle über sich hinauszuwachsen scheinen. Für möglichst viele Menschen diese Momente zu schaffen, ist das Ziel unserer Arbeit und gleichzeitig eine Verpflichtung, eine größtmögliche Vielfalt an Musiktheater zu bieten. Die Erfahrungen der vergangenen Spiel­ zeit haben uns darin bestärkt: Unvergessliche Abende waren für die einen das Erleben der klangräumlichen Wirkung von Helmut Lachenmanns DAS MÄDCHEN MIT DEN SCHWEFELHÖLZERN, für andere die Erstbe­ gegnung mit Brittens PETER GRIMES oder Prokofjews DIE LIEBE ZU DEN DREI ORANGEN, oder vielleicht der Zugriff junger Regisseure auf Klassiker wie RIGOLETTO und PARSIFAL. Und wieder andere haben ihren unver gess­ lichen Opernabend in unserer neuen zweiten Spielstätte, der Tischlerei, erlebt. In dieser Saison setzen wir diesen Weg fort: Mit dem geplanten Projekt HIMMELSMECHANIK steht das Erleben zeitgenössischen Musiktheaters jenseits der traditionellen Bühnensituation wieder am Anfang der Spielzeit.

Colleen K. Reilly, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2009 The Spoleto Festival U.S.A. is a seventeen day international arts festival held annually in Charleston, South Carolina. While the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. perpetuates many of the cultural practices of the hegemonic community of Charleston, it also participates in negotiations of culture on the contemporary global stage. The Festival and the City rely on one another to constitute an identity that is consumable for a tourist and/or festival audience, and this relationship became even more urgent after Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Hurricane Hugo serves as a peripeteia of the self-fashioning and self-reflexive narrative shaped by the Charleston elite since the 18th century, and the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. serves as the agent of its denouement. This function of the festival impulse in the contemporary urban setting of Charleston, South Carolina will be the focus of this dissertation, which will examine the relationship between the ―placedness‖ of the historical city and the ―placelessness‖ of the festival atmosphere.

    NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM UNIVERSAL EDITION 7 UNIVERSAL 100 years in the Musikverein EDITION May 2014 Musikblätter 7 Dear Music Lovers! “Back then, nobody was astute enough to notice the huge wheels turning in those massive, hidden mills that began to grind inexorably towards the Great War,” writes Joseph Roth in his novel Radetzkymarsch. When Emil Hertzka, who had assumed management of Universal-Edition in 1907, signed the rental agreement for the offices in Vienna’s Musikverein on 26 June 1914, he, like many others, still considered the old world to be in perfect order. Just two days later, this world began to crumble following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. However, 100 years on, UE is still headquartered in the Musikverein. The same rooms once frequented by Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg, Béla Bartók, Leoš Janáček and Kurt Weill are now patronised with equal ease and familiarity by Pierre Boulez, Arvo Pärt, Wolfgang Rihm and Georg Friedrich Haas. What made it possible for UE to survive two world wars and become the 1 publishing house that it is today, building on the key works of modernism to provide the same support for the contemporary music of our era? This issue of the Musikblätter follows the history of UE through the work of three great men without whom the publishing house could never have become the institution that it is today. These men are Emil Hertzka (1869–1932), who reshaped the identity of the publishing house with his new focus on contemporary music, Hans W. Heinsheimer (1900–1993), who helped establish the major theatrical works of the early 20th century, and Alfred Schlee (1901–1999), who saved countless compositions from destruction during the Second World War and brought virtually all the significant composers of his day to UE after it.
