Former studies have shown that there is an interspecific allometric relationship between egg size and adult body size in butterflies and skippers. This is here re-assessed at the family and subfamily levels in order to determine to what extent the overall trend is uniform through different taxonomic lineages. The results suggest that different subtaxa are characterised by different allometric slopes. Al- though statistical analysis across species means is known to be potentially misleading to assess evolu- tionary relations, it is shown that the comparison of apparent patterns (based on species means) with inferred evolutionary trends (based on independent contrasts) may help to understand the evolution of egg size in butterflies. Further, intuitive reconsideration of statistically non-significant results may prove informative. As an example, argumentation in favour of a positive association between large egg size and the use of monocotyledon plants as larval food is presented. Taxa where atypical allometric trends are found include the Riodininae and Theclini (Lycaenidae), the Graphiini (Papilionidae), and the Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae). -

However it has been abandoned as an area of lepidopterological studies for a long time. A total number of 80 butterfly species were recorded during inventory studies (2005-2008), which proved the occurrence of 80 species (81.6% of species recorded in the Mazovia voivodeship and about half of Polish fauna), including 7 from the European Red Data Book and 15 from the national red list (8 protected by law). Several xerothermophilous species have probably become extinct in the last few decadesColias ( myrmidone, Pseudophilotes vicrama, Melitaea aurelia, Hipparchia statilinus, H. alcyone), or are endangered in the KNP and in the region (e.g. Maculinea arion, Melitaea didyma), due to afforestation and spontaneous succession. Higrophilous butterflies have generally suffered less from recent changes in land use, but action to stop the deterioration of their habitats is urgently needed. -

Abstract. The microstructure, hydrophobicity, adhesion and chemical composition of the butterfly and moth wing surfaces were investigated by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a contact angle meter, and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). Using ground calcium carbonate (heavy CaCO3 ) as contaminating particle, the self-cleaning performance of the wing surface was evaluated. The wing surfaces, composed of naturally hydrophobic material (chitin, protein, fat, etc.), possess complicated hierarchical micro/nano structures. According to the large contact angle (CA, 148.3~156.2° for butterfly, 150.4~154.7° for moth) and small sliding angle (SA, 1~3° for butterfly, 1~4° for moth), the wing surface is of low adhesion and superhydrophobicity. The removal rate of contaminating particle from the wing surface is averagely 88.0% (butterfly wing) and 87.7% (moth wing). There is a good positive correlation ( R 2 =0.8385 for butterfly, 0.8155 for moth) between particle removal rate and roughness index of the wing surface. The coupling effect of material element and structural element contributes to the outstanding superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning performance of the wing surface. The wings of flying insect can be potentially used as templates for biomimetic preparation of biomedical interfacial material with multi-functions. -

Butterflies are disproportionately the subject of notes, articles, and books. Virtually all butterfly books aimed at general audiences, if they say anything to justify themselves, state the case in very modest terms. Authors too numerous to cite mention the captivat¬ ing sight of colorful butterflies on the wing. Many professional biologists doing scientific research with butterflies can refer back to childhood interest in catching and collecting these animals. Zoological Studies 44(1): 26-33. Habrodais poodiae Brown is one of only 3 species of the Theclini that occur in North America, and it is the only member of the tribe that is endemic to Mexico. Habrodais poodiae was described from Sierra de Juárez in Baja California Norte, the northeastern part of which represents the southern exten- sion of the Californian Phytogeographic Province. Additional populations of H. poodiae occur in Sierra San Pedro Mártir, disjunct from and far to the south of the type locality. These populations are phenotypically dis- tinct from those of the type locality, and are described herein as a new subspecies, H. poodiae browni. This new subspecies represents the southernmost limit of the Nearctic Habrodais. (Theclinae: Theclini) is described from Gansu, China. It is closely related to A. praetextatus (FUJIOKA, 1992) and is allopatric with the latter. Its food plant is suspected to be some species of Syringa LINNAEUS (Oleaceae), which is abundant at the type locality. A new junior synonym is recognized: Artopoetes pryeri cheni KOIWAYA, 2014 syn. nov. (= Artopoetes pryeri zhaoi YUAN, 2005). Introduction: A strange ‡ of the genus Artopoetes CHAPMAN, 1909 (type species: Lycaena pryeri MURRAY, 1873) was unexpectedly collected by Mr. CHUN-HAO WANG from a subalpine broadleaf forest mixed with the Syringa trees in the Bailongjiang Valley, southern Gansu during a collecting trip in summer of 2014. It was identified by the author as an undescribed species of Artopoetes CHAPMAN, possessing some peculiar characters in the wing-pattern. With the help of Mr. CHUN-HAO WANG in the detailed information of the collecting locality, the author successfully collected a good number of additional specimens in both sexes. A careful study of both, † and ‡ genitalia, proves this species to be new for science, representing the third known species of the genus Artopoetes CHAPMAN. -

(NEW Dec. 3, PAPILIO SERIES) 2008 GEOGRAPHIC VARIATION AND NEW TAXA OF WESTERN NORTH AMERICAN BUTTERFLIES, ESPECIALLY FROM COLORADO By James A. Scott & Michaels. Fisher, with some parts by David M. Wright, Stephen M. Spomer, Norbert G. Kondla, Todd Stout, Matthew C. Garhart, & Gary M. Marrone Introduction and Abstract Michael Fisher is currently updating the 1957 book Colorado Butterflies, by F. Martin Brown, J. Donald Eff, and Bernard Rotger (Fisher 2005a, 2005b, 2006). This project has emphasized the necessity of naming certain butterflies in Colorado and vicinity that are distinctive, but currently have no name, as part of our goal of applying correct species/ subspecies names to all Colorado butterflies. Eleven of those distinctive butterflies are named here, in the genera Anthocharis, Neominois, Asterocampa, Argynnis (Speyeria), Euphydryas, Lycaena, and Hesperia. New life histories are reported for species or subspecies of Neominois & Oeneis & Euphydryas & Lycaena that were recently described or recently elevated in status. Lycaena jlorUs differs in hostplant, egg morphology, and somewhat in a seta on 151 -stage larvae. We also report the results ofresearch elsewhere in North America that was needed to determine which of the current subspecies names should be applied to other butterflies in Colorado, in the genera Anthocharis, Neominois, Apodemia, Callophrys, At/ides, Euphilotes, PlebeJus, Polites, & Hylephila. This research has added additional species to the total of Colorado butterflies. Nomenclatural problems in Colorado Lycaena & Calloph1ys are settled with lectotypes and designations of type localities and two pending petitions to suppress toxotaxa. Difficulties with the ICZN Code in properly applying names to clines are explored, and new terminology is given to some necessary biological solutions. -

Рассматриваются межвидовые взаимоотношения на имагинальной, эмбриональной и личиночной ста- диях развития 24 видов голубянок из 11 родов, включаемых в подсемейство хвостатки. В Южном Приморье 14 видов хвостаток трофически связаны с дубом монгольским (Quercus mongolica), бабочки 12 видов появляются в первой половине июля. У видов, занимающих одну экологическую нишу, отмечена дифференциация времени дневной активности бабочек, разобщение мест кладок яиц, различия в поведении и окраске гусениц. Summary. Interspecific relationships on the imaginal, egg and larval stages of development of 24 Theclini species from 11 genera are discussed. 14 species of Theclini are trophically related to Quercus mongolica;
