G. Sebald, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Ian McEwan Elizabeth Andrews McArthur This dissertation analyzes how twentieth- and early twenty-first- century novelists respond to the English landscape through their presentation of narrative and their experiments with novelistic form. Opening with a discussion of the English planning movement, “Narrative Topography” reveals how shifting perceptions of the structure of English space affect the content and form of the contemporary novel. The first chapter investigates literary responses to the English landscape between the World Wars, a period characterized by rapid suburban growth. It reveals how Virginia Woolf, in Mrs. Dalloway and Between the Acts, reconsiders which narrative choices might be appropriate for mobilizing and critiquing arguments about the relationship between city, country, and suburb. The following chapters focus on responses to the English landscape during the present era. The second chapter argues that W. G. Sebald, in The Rings of Saturn, constructs rural Norfolk and Suffolk as containing landscapes of horror—spaces riddled with sinkholes that lead his narrator to think about near and distant acts of violence. As Sebald intimates that this forms a porous “landscape” in its own right, he draws attention to the fallibility of representation and the erosion of cultural memory. -

The book features twelve female characters who are very different from each other, but what they have in common is that they each, in their own way, face stigma, misunderstanding and social exclusion. The social construction of stigma causes various kinds of social inequali- ties of the stigmatized. Through the fictional narratives of the stigmatized and the reflec- tion of their position in the novel, stigmatized women become the bearers of change and not merely the victims of oppression. The prize, a proven literarysuccès d’estime, is a big achievement for black British women that now have an internationally acclaimed contemporary literary voice. This is a contemporary panoramic, polyphonic novel, written partly in prose and partly as a poem or simply a poem in prose, without using initial capital letters in sentences and full-stops apart from the endings of individual (sub)chapters, which describes the fictional lives of mostly black wom- en in Britain. -

TAN Abstract This study approaches six of Ishiguro’s novels –– A Pale View of Hills (1982), An Artist of the Floating World (1986), The Remains of the Day (1989), The Unconsoled (1995), When We Were Orphans (2000), and Never Let Me Go (2005) – – through a treatment of these works as novelistic works of art. It derives its theoretical inspiration from aesthetic theories of art by Étienne Gilson, Graham Gordon, Peter Lamarque, Susanne Langer, and Nöel Carroll, as well as concepts found within the disciplines of philosophy of mind (especially phenomenology), post-classical narratology (possible world theory applied to literary studies), and studies on memory as well as narrative immersion. -

Matthew Brown, University of Massachusetts-Boston To the surprise of many, John Banville's The Sea won the 2005 Booker prize for fiction, surprising because of all of Banville's dazzlingly sophisticated novels, The Sea seems something of an afterthought, a remainder of other and better books. Everything about The Sea rings familiar to readers of Banville's oeuvre, especially its narrator, who is enthusiastically learned and sardonic and who casts weighty meditations on knowledge, identity, and art through the murk of personal tragedy. This is Max Morden, who sounds very much like Alexander Cleave from Eclipse (2000), or Victor Maskell from The Untouchable (1997). -

Writing for Change A Narratological Approach to Repositioning Afropolitan Discourses in Adichie’s Americanah, Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other and Selasi’s Ghana Must Go Lisa van der Werf 5758572 Master Thesis Literature Today Universiteit Utrecht Supervisor: Birgit Kaiser Second reader: Barnita Bagchi 20576 words 5 October 2020 Van der Werf 2 Abstract This thesis argues the often-unheard narratives represented in Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo and Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi are urgent to the circulation of world literature. Their fiction demonstrates how novels can be meaningful aesthetic encounters to address the residual powerlessness concerning contemporary Black living. I first discuss why Afropolitanism functions as a fitting neologism for this thesis in the Theoretical Framework, while also selecting theories from narratological studies in order to do my analysis concerning these novels. In the second chapter I explore how Adichie’s Americanah imparts emotional empathy and productive unease concerning the humanity of the Afropolitan experience. Chapter three revolves around how Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other resists easy binary categorisations and confronts readers with prevailing racial stereotypes and pertinent issues. Lastly, the chapter on Selasi’s Ghana Must Go discusses how the narrative offers the reader a more empathic relation with the Afropolitan experience. These chapters all demonstrate how these works of fiction offer the reader to engage with the painful dynamics of contemporary racism and what literary narratives can do to address these pertaining problematics. I seek to locate their novels in the critical context which encouraged their problematisation of history and explore the political and philosophical influences which led to this problematisation. I argue that scepticism about realism as a literary form was extended to historical narrative in Carey's case and that Malouf's scepticism springs from his more radical doubts about the capacity of language to adequately represent the world. The treatment of history in the work of these novelists is analysed as a process which varies according to specific novels and which becomes a less important emphasis as strategies for casting doubt on history's truth claims become conventional in themselves.
