The Many Faces of Certainty: Wittgenstein's Logical Pragmatism So I am trying to say something that sounds like pragmatism. (OC 422) In his struggle to uncover the nature of our basic beliefs, Wittgenstein depicts them variously in On Certainty: he thinks of them in propositional terms, in pictorial terms and in terms of acting. As propositions, they would be of a peculiar sort – a hybrid between a logical and an empirical proposition (OC 136, 309). These are the so-called 'hinge propositions' of On Certainty (OC 341). Wittgenstein also thinks of these beliefs as forming a picture, a World-picture – or Weltbild (OC 167). This is a step in the right (nonpropositional) direction, but not the ultimate step. Wittgenstein's ultimate and crucial depiction of our basic beliefs is in terms of a know-how, an attitude, a way of acting (OC 204). Here, he treads on pragmatist ground. But can Wittgenstein be labelled a pragmatist, having himself rejected the affiliation because of its utility implication? But you aren't a pragmatist? No. For I am not saying that a proposition is true if it is useful. (RPP I, 266) Wittgenstein resists affiliation with pragmatism because he does not want his use of use to be confused with the utility use of use. For him, it is not that a proposition is true if it is useful, but that use gives the proposition its sense. -

(The DSB was published in 14 vol- umes in 1970–76, edited by C. C. Gillispie, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons.) I was later asked to write two more entries: for Parseval and Emil Leon Post. The entry for Post had to be done very quickly, and I could not have finished it without the generous help of one of his relatives. By the time the last of these articles was published in 1976, that for Giovanni Vailati, I had come out publicly as a homosexual and was involved in the gay liberation movement. But my article on Vailati was still discreet. If I had written it later, I would probably have included evidence of his homosexuality. The seven articles for the Dictionary of Scientific Biography have a uniform appear- ance. (The exception is the article on Burali-Forti, which I present here as I originally wrote it—with reference footnotes. -

Indian logic has a long history. It somewhat covers the domains of two of the six schools (darsanas) of Indian philosophy, namely, Nyaya and Vaisesika. The generally accepted definition of In- dian logic over the ages is the science which ascertains valid knowledge either by means of six senses or by means of the five members of the syllogism. In other words, perception and inference constitute the sub- ject matter of logic. The science of logic evolved in India through three ~ges: the ancient, the medieval and the modern, spanning almost thirty centuries. Advances in Computer Science, in particular, in Artificial Intelligence have got researchers in these areas interested in the basic problems of language, logic and cognition in the past three decades. In the 1980s, Artificial Intelligence has evolved into knowledge-based and intelligent system design, and the knowledge base and inference engine have become standard subsystems of an intelligent System. One of the important issues in the design of such systems is knowledge acquisition from humans who are experts in a branch of learning (such as medicine or law) and transferring that knowledge to a computing system. The second important issue in such systems is the validation of the knowl- edge base of the system i.e. ensuring that the knowledge is complete and consistent. -

Reflections on the senses, and particularly on vision, permeate the writings of Galileo Galilei, one of the main protagonists of the scientific revolution. This aspect of his work has received scant attention by historians, in spite of its importance for his achievements in astron- omy, and also for the significance in the innovative scientific methodology he fostered. Galileo's vision pursued a different path from the main stream of the then contemporary studies in the field; these were concerned with the dioptrics and anatomy of the eye, as elaborated mainly by Johannes Kepler and Christoph Scheiner. Galileo was more concerned with the phenomenology rather than with the mechanisms of the visual process. His general interest in the senses was psychological and philosophical; it reflected the fallacies and limits of the senses and the ways in which scientific knowledge of the world could be gathered from potentially deceptive appearances. Galileo's innovative conception of the relation between the senses and external reality contrasted with the classical tradition dominated by Aristotle; it paved the way for the modern understanding of sensory processing, culminating two centuries later in Johannes Mu« ller's elaboration of the doctrine of specific nerve energies and in Helmholtz's general theory of perception. -

Introduction Pragmatists declared their anti-Cartesianism at the first appearance of the movement, in Peirce’s series on cognition written for the Journal of Specu- lative Philosophy (1867–8). As is well known, the brilliant young scientist characterized Cartesian doubt as a “paper doubt”, by opposing it to sci- entists’ true “living doubt” (Peirce 1998 [1868], 115).1 Some readers have not understood the powerful novelty that his opposition to Cartesianism implies. According to Peirce, research does not proceed from skeptical, “paper” doubt. For Peirce, doubt is possible because of a previous cer- tainty, a position which is similar to the one held by Augustine (Augustine 1970). Research moves from one certainty to another; the abandonment of an initial certainty is only reasonable in the presence of a real and surprising phenomenon that alters one of the pillars on which it stands. -

Reflections on Vailati's Pragmatism M. CAAMANO AND P. SUPPES Preliminary remarks The pragmatic project of developing a richer notion of experience Classical pragmatists made a sustained effort to develop a new con ception of experience, free from some simplistic assumptions shared by both traditional rationalists and empiricists, like the idea that experi enceresults from a combination of simple sensations. In his main paper on pragmatism, "The origins and the fundamental idea.of pragmatism" (1909b), Giovanni Vailati characterized our experience of permanent, objective existence in terms of a certain kind of conditional expecta tions, in particular, those which are conditioned to certain deliberate actions of ours being performed. His experiential account of objective existence, based on a systematic relation between deliberate actions and expectations, is a permanent contribution to pragmatic thought, which we analyze and assess. We also consider Vailati's revision of the l"eircean pragmatic maxim, the pragmatic evaluation of meaningless assertions, and his vindication of inferential usefulness as a determin ing factor in both formal systems and empirical theories. Our discus sion will as well include a critical analysis of some less satisfactory aspects of Vailati's thought, whose Brentanian conception of mental facts contrasts sharply with James' sophisticated study of the mind in The Principles of Psychology (1890). Although these story-lines were O created independently and reflected different concerns, they sometimes overlapped and gave each other aid and comfort. Both exerted considerable influence on the way historians of medieval speculative thought conceptualized their subject in the first half of the twentieth cen- tury. Both versions of the map drawn by these two sets of cartographers illustrated what Wallace K. Ferguson later described as “the revolt of the medievalists.”1 One was confined largely to the academy and appealed to a wide variety of medievalists, while the other had a somewhat narrower draw and reflected political and confessional, as well as academic, concerns. The first was the anti-Burckhardtian effort to push Renaissance humanism, understood as combining a knowledge and love of the classics with “the discovery of the world and of man,” back into the Middle Ages. The second was inspired by the neo-Thomist revival launched by Pope Leo XIII, and was inhabited almost exclusively by Roman Catholic scholars. -
