LAST MEETING WITH SYRACUSE

SYRACUSE, NY – The Pitt women’s basketball team came up short on the road on Sunday afternoon as the Syracuse Orange completed the season sweep of the Panthers with a 71-53 victory inside the Carrier Dome on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Dayshanette Harris was the best player on the court for the Panthers on Sunday as she tied a ca- reer-high in ACC play with 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists across 34 minutes of action. Fellow freshman Amber Brown finished off her third straight strong game with 14 points, six rebounds and two steals across 34 minutes. After the Orange opened the scoring with a pair of free throws, Harris knocked down a triple and Gabbie Green hit a floater in the lane to give Pitt the early 5-4 lead. Syracuse was then able to take control of the opening quarter as they went on a 16-2 run to take the 20-7 lead and force a Pitt timeout. The quarter came to a close with a Rita Igbokwe free throw and a and layup by Harris as the Panthers went to the second quarter trailing 24-12. The two squads opened the second quarter exchanging some buckets before Harris netted five straight to cut the Orange lead down to 10, 29-19. After the media timeout, the Orange were able to go on a 7-0 run to take the 38-20 lead but the Panthers responded with the final four points of the game as Brown finished off a layup and Green knocked down a jumper in the lane to send the game to halftime with Syracuse leading 38-24.

Syracuse was able to connect on four three-point- ers in the third while Pitt was led offensively by Brown who netted six points in the quarter. The Panthers were able to get into a rhythm offensively in the fourth quarter but it came just a little too late as they outscored the Orange 18-12 over the final 10 minutes, cutting the deficit to as low as 13 in the final quarter. Harris was the catalyst for Pitt all day long as she netted six points in the final quarter while Brown also scored six in the final frame as the Panthers fell 71-53 on the road. Igbokwe made her first career start on Sunday and battle some foul trouble all afternoon as she finished with seven points, four rebounds and a steal in 21 minutes of action while Green added eight points, two rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes of work.
