This is our third newsletter for 2019, don’t know where the year has gone. In this edition there are ride previews for the majority of the rides left on the calendar together with reviews on the rides already run. Big thank you to Animal Focus for allowing us to use its photos in the newsletter. Hopefully all is on track and going well for anyone who is thinking of attempting a Big Three this season. The State Ride is fast approaching as is the Tom Quillty and before we know it Shahzada will be in progress. That’s how fast time goes. Please read the report and SMC guidance notes in this newsletter. Familiarising yourselves with AERA rules will make your riding life a lot easier. If you don’t have a copy of the rule book, you can download it from the AERA website. Good luck with all your endeavours for the rest of the year and happy riding. The front Cover shows Poppy Kettlewell riding Oso Nicolas at the recent Bumbaldry ride. Poppy was first Junior in a riding time of 5:15. As usual this lovely photo is from Animal Focus.

President’s Report

Well here we are heading towards the middle of the year already, rides are well under way and most are being well attended. I feel the one ride per weekend format seems to be working well. So far this year we have had 8 rides with total of 955 entrants, not too bad I think. The sport is looking great and the year ahead looks promising. Now for some house keeping. I would like to remind all members that when you join this Association you agree to abide by all of its rules, regulations, guidelines and policies. These extend beyond just Horse Welfare and also cover Member Conduct, Harassment, Conflict Resolution and such things as the Social Media Policy. All of these policies are available on the NSWERA website. I would also like to remind all members that your behaviour can directly affect the way our sport is perceived and can damage our image in the wider community at a time when we are all working to increase membership and strengthen our sport. Back to the fun stuff. The NSW State Championships and the Tom Quilty Gold Cup are looming and before we know it they will be upon us, so please start planning your attendance. We have three rides left in the lead up to our State Champs these being Mudgee, Wingello and Tumut. If you plan these rides correctly you will top up your horse’s fitness superbly. Unfortunately at the moment we have no rides between the State ride and the Tom Quilty so some home training will be required. That’s all for now, see you all around the traps as they say. Cheers Tony Warren

NSW ERA COMMITTEE MEETINGS Meetings are currently held at Richmond Club Cnr. East Market and Francis Street, Richmond Meetings commence at 6.00pm sharp. All members are invited to attend. Next Meeting Dates 17 May 2019 14 June 2019 19 July 2019 16 August 2019

NSW SMC notices

First Aid Officers It is now a requirement that the First Aid Officer’s name be recorded on the CS Ride report. The First Aid Officer will be required to complete the First Aid Officer’s Report if an injured person is assessed by the Officer to have a suspected head injury. This form is to be given to the CS and is to be read in conjunction with the Concussion in Sport policy. This policy and forms are found on the website. Horse registration labels Please note that it is the responsibility of us all to ensure that our horse has a current Endurance Horse Registration Label in the horse’s logbook. I refer you all to point 48.1 of the Logbook. "A horse of Endurance status shall only be permitted to enter an endurance ride if it has a current endurance horse registration label in the logbook" If anyone turns up at a ride without the above requirement being satisfied you will not be able to start. The onus is on all members to check how many pages you currently have in your horse’s logbook. Once you see that the logbook is complete or nearing completion, please order a new one. You should allow for a two week turnaround. If you do, all will be well. John Howe for NSW SMC Log Books No log book – no ride. Make sure you have a membership card to prove your membership. Take your manners with you as well and make sure your horse is registered. Also take a lead for your dog. FEI Registered Horses "Trainers and competitors with FEI registered horses - don't forget that FEI Rest Periods also apply after National events (AERA affiliated rides) and extended rest periods apply for Lameness vet outs and where Invasive Treatment is administered! Ignorance of the rules is no excuse and FEI oversee the enforcement of these rules!" Please refer to rules 815.3 and 815.3.1 Essentially the rest periods are: 0 – 46k 5 days Over 46 – 86km 12 days Over 86 – 126km 19 days Over 126 km – 146km 26 days Over 146 km 33 days. In certain circumstances, extended rest periods apply. It’s up to you to familiarise yourself with the rules. NSW SMC

Code of Conduct

I would like to refer you all to President Tony Warren's President's report at the front of this Newsletter. In it Tony refers to our Code of Conduct and requests that people consider what they are doing and saying before they act. Once again, at last night's SMC meeting (26th April) we spent an inordinate amount of time discussing what looked like rather major breaches of our code of conduct. So instead of looking at ways to suitably expend $29,000.00 worth of grant money that we have received, we spent close to two hours wading through letters of complaint and Facebook screen shots, trying to decide what to do next with a couple of members who seem quite intent on turning our endurance events into verbal battlegrounds. Last night's meeting started at 6.00 p.m and finished at close to midnight. Remember that SMC members often have a 5 or 6 hour journey to get to the meetings and as long to get home. We are on the SMC to hopefully, administer our sport in a positive manner that will allow us to grow endurance well into the future. Now I enjoy positive debate and planning for the future, I do not enjoy dealing with the negative behaviour of small group of members who seem intent on causing grief. I would like to refer you all to section 26 Code of Conduct on page 27 of the rule book. Especially 26.2. Every rider and their support personnel shall conduct themselves at all times: a) In a courteous, respectful and professional manner, and shall expect reciprocal courtesy, respect and professionalism from other persons with whom they interact and, b) in a manner so as not to bring the sport of endurance into disrepute and c) in accordance with the AERA Social Media Engagement rules. 26.3 every rider is responsible and accountable, unless compelling circumstances dictate otherwise for the: a) behaviour of their support personnel and b) behaviour of all persons in their camp. As of last night the SMC would plead with members to consider the consequences of their actions and while it might be good fun to let drive at someone via the medium of Social Media, the results in the cold light of day are often not pretty. We take no pleasure in sending members off to the IDP for possible sanction but please believe me that as an SMC we are fed up with not being able to do positive things for our sport. We are all volunteers, some of us have been doing this for over 20 years and we do like to ride our horses too. Be assured that if you, for whatever reason, breach the code of conduct, as I have outlined above, you should be prepared for the consequences that may just take away your riding privileges. So, in closing I would urge you all to treat and respect others as you would like to be treated and respected, yourself. John Howe. NSWERA State Treasurer for and on behalf of the SMC

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Carole Dixon-Smith of DIXON SMITH EQUESTRIAN for her ongoing sponsorship of our awards to Chief Stewards and T.P.Rs.

Carole has been a great promoter and sponsor for our sport for a long time and I feel that as a sport we should support Carole whenever we can.

NSWERA Inc. Teams Competition

The substance of this competition is to encourage riders to work as a team. Many riders consistently complete rides even though they are not always in the top placings. A team of four, consisting of riders who are giving thought to completing the ride in the best time for their horse, on that day at all their rides, will probably be more prolific in obtaining ride completions than those riders who are pushing to win. This competition is aimed at encouraging those riders and enables them to have a reachable prize goal whilst fostering team spirit. x Teams to consist of FOUR RIDERS from any weight division. x Teams comprise of the same four riders for the entire year (different horses may be used) x Teams to be named and nominated before the first ride in which they are to compete. x There is no entry fee – open to all NSW-ERA riding members. x There must be a minimum of three riders from a team to start at any one ride. x At any one ride the best three times are to count. x If less than three riders complete, there is no score for that team at that ride. x Teams will be placed in order of time at each ride and scored accordingly. x Six points for the first place team down to 2 points for the 5th team. x Every team that completes thereafter scores one point. x 1 extra bonus point for every 10km in excess of 80km. x Any team with all four riders completing gets 4 bonus points regardless of finishing position. x A rider may be a member of only one team per year. x Teams are responsible for sending their results to the NSW Pointscore Registrar. x Results must be submitted within four weeks of the date of the ride.

TEAMS 2019 This competition is open to all NSWERA members 2019 and it’s not too late to enter your own team – entry form available from the Secretariat. Tumut Endurance 1-2 June 2019

We have moved! This year Tumut Endurance has a new ride base situated in the Bondo State Forest, which is on the Brindabella Road between Tumut and Canberra. Due to where the ride is situated, the course will elevate to 1200m. The new base allows us to have access to amazing tracks that offer something for everyone! Pine forest, hardwood forest, flat, undulations and some hills. The ride is significantly easier than previous years, making it great for any horse with a reasonable level of fitness. You name it, this ride has it, making it a fantastic leg up before the Tom Quilty or for the perfect novice ride. We will be offering a 20km and 40km ride on the Saturday and a 20km, 40km and 80km ride on the Sunday. Please follow us on Facebook (Tumut Endurance) to keep up to date with information and preview some of the ride. 2019 Tom Quilty Gold Cup

Stirling’s Crossing Equestrian Complex Imbil, Queensland. 11—14 July 2019

The TQ19 event will be hosted at Australia’s only purpose-built ride base in the picturesque Mary River Valley on the weekend 11 – 14 July 2019. For three years the Stirling’s Crossing Endurance Club has conducted rides from the venue, both AERA affiliated and FEI rated.

The TQ19 Committee have been working towards this event since October 2017. Members of Stirling’s Crossing Endurance Club have been building experience, skills and momentum during 2018 with rides in May, July and August. The Club hosted the Stirling’s Classic in May, the Queensland State Championships over the weekend of 13 – 15 July, the same calendar spot scheduled for TQ19, and the Stirling’s Multi Event in August including FEI rides.

Events during 2018 received a total of 480 nominations over the three events, including 29 nominations for FEI events and 99 nominations for 160 km events.

Kim Moir, President of Stirling’s Crossing Endurance Club, said:

“Each event has been a learning curve for us and has provided the opportunity to trial different configurations for the venue. We have a lot of wisdom and experience in our club that makes the prospect of running TQ19 a little bit easier!”

“Moving on to 2019, we will host the Stirling’s Classic 120 in May, TQ19 in July and the Equestrian Australia National Championships in October. We may even try to squeeze in a training ride early in the year and perhaps offer a 160 km ride in May to support those who still need to qualify for a Tom Quilty Gold Cup event.”

The aim of the TQ19 Committee is to provide an event that is inclusive and safe for members, officials and horses. The variety of tracks available in the Imbil Forest allows for a technical course that is do-able to support a good completion rate. This is a course that needs to be ridden with attention to horse fitness but can also be competitive. The Biosecurity Plan that is being developed will support maximum participation.

Staying on after the TQ19 would be worthwhile as the Sunshine Coast region is one of Australia’s top tourist destinations. Imbil provides a great base to explore the beautiful Mary Valley region as well as the spectacular national parks, the foodie culture in Noosa and Mooloolaba beach which was voted the sixth most popular beach in Australia on TripAdvisor together with the spectacular hinterland areas. There is easy access to many tourist attractions including the world-famous Australia Zoo, and you can get up-close to the many Humpback whales that are near to the coast at this time of the year.

The team at Stirling’s Crossing Endurance Club looks forward to welcoming you to our region.

Sussex Inlet Endurance Ride 2019

The South Coast Zone Endurance Riders Association hosted an endurance weekend on the 9th and 10th of March at Sussex Inlet. The weekend’s events included a 40km and 80km ride catering to intermediate and open endurance riders. Riders came from all over the State, travelling from as far away as Albury and the Hunter Valley to compete. In total there were 118 entrants – 44 in the 40km, and 74 in the 80km. After a mild Saturday, Sunday proved tough, with the sun shining and a top temperature of 32 degrees. The overall winner of the 80km event was York Shepheard from Nelligen riding 13 year old, Currowan Starlite. He completed the course in the blistering time of 4 hours and 19 minutes. At the rear of the ride, the last successful competitors finished the course in 8 hours and 50 minutes (Leisa Courtman riding Zimba and Heather Nagle riding Aloha Dash), with the remaining riders spread evenly between the top and tail end. Congratulations to everyone who successfully completed. The 80km event had an 82% completion rate, and the 40km event boasted a 93% completion rate, with 41 of 44 starters successfully finishing. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, we were able to present hundreds of dollars’ worth of prizes over the weekend. Some of the awards and sponsors have been listed below: The 80km teams event was sponsored by Jervis Bay Stock Feeds and was won by Noni Seagrim, Ellen Vine and Tahnaya and Kaitlyn Merceica. The 40km teams event was sponsored by The Mobile GG Spot and won by Sean Griffin, Monica Ballard, Christine Stephenson and Talea Hasko-Stewart. The Peter Norman Memorial Award was sponsored by Jesse Buchan and the Norman Family. This award is won by the first combination to successfully complete where the rider is also the owner and trainer of the horse. The winner, York Shepheard, said he was proud to have won such an award, and especially one with Peter’s name on it. Jon De Le Arabians sponsored rugs from 1st to 3rd place and best conditioned (BC) in every division of the 80km. Many thanks to the rest of the sponsors who contributed to the running of the ride with everything from water and hay at checkpoints to raffle draw prizes. A huge thanks also to all our wonderful volunteers and vets – we couldn’t have run the ride without you! It was a team effort over the weekend with almost 40 sets of hands contributing to the smooth running of the ride. As a first time committee running this ride, we hope to put on an even better event next time. See you all there!

UPPER CORINDI 40km TRAINING and 20km SOCIAL RIDE Presented by the Clarence/Coffs Endurance Riders Inc Saturday and Sunday March 16th and 17th 2019

The challenging ride of the Upper Corindi Endurance was recently enjoyed by fifty-five participants from both local areas and from afar. Rides of 20 km and 40 km were held over both days on March 16th and 17th. The fantastic weekend was organized by the Coffs Clarence Endurance riders [CCER]. We were so lucky to have near perfect riding weather with light misty rain on Saturday and a sunny day on Sunday. The track was firm underfoot, well cleared, with arrows and caution signs and there was ample water and carrots for the horses and sweets for the riders at the many check points manned by the Corindi Beach SES along the way. Out on the track, we experienced the amazing diversity of the landscape from narrow forest tracks, stream crossings and wide open roads to stunning mountain ranges where glimpses of the South Solitary Islands could be spotted through thick bottle brush and grassy trees. The incredible sandstone country was a challenge, with massive smooth boulders and steep gullies and most riders chose to lead their horses through this area. Time could be made up by cantering through the breathtaking scenery of the limestone ridges, tropical rainforest and scrubby bush areas before arriving in the lush open plains of the home paddock. The ride would not have been so successful if it weren't for our terrific ride organizer Pam Karner who coordinated and planned the CCER Endurance, which is primarily affiliated with QERA and dual affiliated with NSWERA. An excellent job of the track clearing was organized many weeks beforehand by Trail Master Malcolm Matters, who was assisted by willing club members Pam Karner, Nick Endreas, Carla Marchant, Paul Porter, Rosie Williams, Chris and Modena Schofield, Sharon and Isabel Foster, Tracy King and Ethan Bowden. Greeter and biosecurity checker Carla Marchant did a wonderful job checking all the log and PIC numbers and the tight Biosecurtiy ensured that all horses were required to have temperature logs of either 10 days if they were from outside the Hendra Zone or three days if they were vaccinated and within a Hendra zone. Thanks to all the amazing office staff, Melissa Drake, Sal Taylor, Tracy King and Carly Williams, who

worked tirelessly throughout the weekend along with busy data entry team Vicki Shaw and Terri Campbell. A big thanks goes out to the vets, Alan Giles, Chelsea Kramer and Chief Stewards Peter Kelly and Mary Lou Locke and TPR staff Tangil Kinch, Sharon Foster, Maureen Felton, Janelle Firth, Bob Locke and Paul Porter who were kept busy all weekend. Horses water troughs were filled and topped up frequently by hard working volunteers Nick Endreas and Chris Schofield. Nick also helped out with walking a horse or two when riders were busy, thanks Nick! An all you can eat yummy pizza was supplied by Jane Shannon on Saturday night with a get together and an informative chat by Malcolm Matters who explained the ride and pointed out the areas to watch out for on the track. Sensational coffee and snacks were provided all weekend long by the Flannelette Baguet to hungry volunteers and riders. Carla Marchant organized the terrific Raffle on Sunday afternoon, which was supported by amazing sponsors who made this ride possible, Sponsors included: Group 1 Feeds, Naughty Nag Rug Repairs, Coffs Coast Health Club Toormina, Horseland Coffs Harbour, Rosies Riders traversing the challenging sandstone Ropes, New Horizone Equine Services and Arabians, country at Upper Corindi Hippo Health, Relax and Relieve Equine Therapies, Coffs Harbour Produce, Humane Horsemanship, Norco Bellingen, Sal Taylor and Rachel Vercoe Photography. We can’t thank the private property owners enough for allowing us once again to use their beautiful property as our ride base. There were many happy riders and tired horses by the end of the weekend, who I’m sure went away with some great memories of this exciting ride and will hopefully be up for the challenge again next year.

John King

"Celebrating 46 years" Six years after the first Quilty was held, Mudgee held its first Endurance Ride, under the name of Central Tablelands Equestrian Group. That ride was not affiliated with E.R.A. but that was changed in 1973. 1973 was also the year that John King joined the Club. John had seen Eric Robinson training for the first ride in 1972 & became interested. His first ride was at Mudgee in 1974, a distance of 80 miles, there was a draw for starting times, & there was a staggered start from 4am. He rode "Fella", a horse belonging to Alec Brown who was President at the time. They were vetted out! John became President in 1982, a position he held for ten years. During this time he didn't ride any Mudgee rides but rode at Sofala, Tooraweenah, Bendemeer, Woodstock, Merriwa & Sunny Corner. In 1981 the Club name was changed to Mudgee Equestrian Group and a year later to Mudgee Endurance Riders Association. John took part in the 175th Anniversary of the settlement of Mudgee re-enactment in 1997 riding "Able" ( able to do anything) with other Mudgee Club members. His final ride was at Cooyal in 2009 riding "Touch of Maheb", his third horse being "Buckaroo Diamond". John remembers one incident while he was president that brings a chuckle. Two girls arrived at ride base at the Saleyards with their horses, filled in the entry forms & vetted in. The ride started on the Sunday morning but the two girls didn't arrive at the first checkpoint. This caused panic for the committee & a search party was sent out. No luck. Finally it was discovered that they had taken their horses home on Saturday night & decided to go to a dancing class in Bathurst instead. Over the years John’s continued support has been greatly appreciated by Club members, whether track marking, assisting at rides, organising sponsors & always attending meetings. Twenty two buckles doesn’t equate with his enthusiasm for the sport and dedication to the Club. Thank you John, a Life Membership seems paltry repayment for 46 years with Mudgee Endurance Riders Club. Very best wishes from all the committee.

Bumbaldry 16/17 March

Once again a very successful endurance weekend was held by the Lachlan Endurance Riders Club in the wild hills of Bumbaldry over fantastic bridle paths and trails, set by the Walker and Jonkers families with our ride base at ‘Waratah’ Bumbaldry. There were 30 happy riders that enjoyed the 20kms Introductory ride held on Saturday with a great success rate of almost 94% with only one horse vetting out and one withdrawing before the start. Each successful rider received a great LERC green bag with a pen on completion. Quite a few of these riders backed up and competed in the 40kms Intermediate ride on the Sunday morning as well. Big thanks to Tom McCormack our Chief Steward. Tom also did the electronic timing with Sandy Little making a detour to help out as well! Thanks and welcome back to Jai Ingram for helping out so efficiently in the office and walking a million miles! Our 80kms main event started at 5.30am in the most beautiful cool conditions for this time of year, and those not attending will be sorry they missed it. We only received 37 entries this year, very much down on previous events due to a ride being held on the South Coast the weekend prior and one on each other weekend in March. The Middleweight winner of the ride was Oso’s Tahlia Franke on Oso Evita in a time of 5.15 hours. Tahlia received the prestigious Best Conditioned Horse Award and she also escorted Junior rider Poppy Kettlewell around, riding her great horse Oso Nicholas. Poppy was first in the junior division. Second in the Middleweight division was Ian Curtis riding BH Summer Wind in a riding time of 5.45 with Marisa Levitt coming in third on Scarlet Oaks Faiza in 6.11 hrs. In the Heavyweight division, club member John Robertson was first riding James Ryan’s good horse, Cedar Ridge Hy Regard in a riding time of 5.36. John also taking out the Best Conditioned Horse award; with Andrew Jonkers riding his homebred Girilambone Comet coming in second in a riding time of 5.50. Third heavyweight was Iain Paterson, one of our international riders from Scotland, riding Oso Leonardo in 6.28 for his first Australian ride! We were very fortunate to have several other international riders, Patricia Mechior from Switzerland; Jana Kupper from Austria and Olivia Antoine from Belgium The Lightweight rider Gertraud Norton riding her homebred Scarlet Oaks Amica was first home in 5.09 also

(Continued from page 23) taking out Best Conditioned Lightweight Horse. Second home in the Lightweight division was Fia Hasko- Stewart in 5.29 on her BH Adventuress; and third went to Emma Dimech on Oso Diamond Dazzler in 5.59. Second in the Junior division was Emma Cole riding Earlston Spa in 5.28, taking out the Best Conditioned Junior Horse; and followed by Tahnaya Mercieca riding Askari’s Harmony in 6.55. In all 32 of the 37 starters completed well to the veterinary panel’s satisfaction with only 1 withdrawn and 4 vetting out, a great completion rate! The Intermediate ride of 40kms had the highest number of competitors with 52 starters and 49 completions, giving it an even better completion rate of 94.5%. Everyone loved the course and cool weather we were graced with many promising to return next year. We are so very appreciative of our landholders who permitted our riders to traverse their properties with other neighbours coming to base to invite the ride organisers to ‘please use our property’ next year! Ride Base owners Kelly and Lance were very happy with the condition the grounds were left in after 119 horses being on the ride base. We also appreciate our veterinarians Chris Dowey, Georgia Ladmore, Ben Graham and Tony Parker making the journey to look after our equine friends. Over the weekend the Cowra PCYC did a sterling job looking after hungry campers and did a roaring business. The Back Creek Bush Fire Brigade and Waugoola Brigade combine at our rides to do our communications with amazing efficiency so that we know where competitors are at all times and man checkpoints with water, hay and lollies! The energy and attention to detail of our club members in running this event is second to none. In these times of severe drought; the prices of feed for our horses and the huge amount of water needed on track is nothing short of amazing. Congratulations all! But particularly the Walker family of Tina, Stuart, Alizah and Dusty; the Jonkers family of Linda, Kylie, Andrew and Briony; together with Helen and Mark Lindsay. Erica Allan also did a fantastic job of securing sponsors both locally and within the sport as follows: Our 1st - 3rd Place and Best Conditioned horse sponsors. Kintamani Arabians Edinburgh Horse Rugs and Farmyard Saddlery Snowy Mountains Zone NSW Endurance Central Veterinary Services Cowra Spot On Cowra Lachlan River Produce Specialized Saddles Australia Marks Pumps Courtney Michelle Girilambone Arabians Shellal Endurance - Allix Jones Cowra Toyota LT 131 Pizza

Mt Lagoon Ride Review. 30 and 31 March 2019

What a weekend that was! With torrential rain falling Friday evening, Saturday rolled around to be a beautiful day with the sun shining by mid-morning to dry out the ground until the cold wind blew up from the Snowys bringing with it the wind chill from the first snow fall of the year. Sunday was predicted to have perfect riding conditions and Mother Nature didn’t disappoint! The weekend saw 204 horses entered across 7 events and a completion rate of 88% making for a busy weekend for our office and grounds committee. Congratulations to Georgia Curry (MWT) riding Mountain Breeze Just Annallusion and Sophie Ramsay (JNR) riding Autumnight Goldmine for taking out line honours in our inaugural 80km event in a riding time of 5 Hours 27 Minutes. Our new Ride Base located at Mountain Lagoon provided the Ride Committee with the opportunity to use the infamous Wards Track in the first leg of the 80km event and new tracks in and around Mountain Lagoon for all other courses utilising local property, bush tracks and National Park trails and the inclusion of Tootie Creek Fire trail and a decent climb out of the valley. Snax on Trax travelled up from the Southern Highlands of NSW bringing yummy food, sweets and magnificent coffee, milkshakes and iced chocolates. If you didn’t sample the canteen you certainly missed out, but be sure to catch them at the next event they attend. WICEN provided our radio communications between ride base and checkpoints, thanks to Col and his team for providing seamless communication and monitoring of all riders over the weekend. Special thanks to our Generous sponsors: x Bendigo Bank – North Richmond, x Agnes Banks Equine Clinic, x Hawkesbury Screen-printing and Embroidery, x Hawkesbury Equine Veterinary Centre, x Horseland Richmond, x Conderosa Endurance, x Gary Sim Plumbing, x Fibre Fresh, x Ron & Val Males – Ralvon Arabians, Best conditioned line-up at Mt Lagoon x Newmarket Saddlery,

We would like to extend our thanks to all the property owners, track markers, TPRS, time keepers, road crossing personnel, water carters, office and grounds crew and everyone who volunteered to help not only on the weekend but for all their work in the lead up over the duration of the weekend and after it is all said and done without all of them the weekend would not have been possible. The Committee also wishes to thank all riders and crew for the way the ride base was left. Very minimal rubbish needed to be collected. We hope to make the 2020 event even better. Tooraweenah ride review

Tooraweenah Endurance Ride was another great weekend with 115 entries over the two days. The conditions were pretty tough with warmer weather and some flood damaged tracks which occurred with 119ml in a few hours two weeks before the ride. I think the rocks have multiplied with the dust storms and erosion. The 80k ride winners in the divisions were Sophie Ramsay in 5hrs 19, Debbie Pevy, Graeme Burchell and Amanda Myers. Well done to all these riders and everyone else who completed. The horses looked great. The intermediate and introductory rides were well patronised with kids, families and grandparents riding. It is a pleasure to see everyone just enjoying riding their horses for fun. Also great to see some old faces from the Bonham mob at Manilla riding over the weekend. Wow kids do grow very fast!! One of the outstanding experiences over the weekend for me was riding with Lara my daughter (8) and nephew Mitchell (10) in their first 80k. It was a great achievement for them in a bit over 9hrs!! Not sure how quick they will back up for another one. I was in stitches Graeme Burchell riding Kiowa, 1st HWT/BC. 6.42. laughing at their riding styles coming in on the last 4ks. From behind it looked like they were Snow Bennett riding Martha St Milly with Keryl Bennett well and truly under the influence with a lot of on Aloha Zac in the 40k introductory ride. rocking and rolling around the saddle happening. Also I would like to acknowledge that 6 out of 6 juniors completed for completion rate of 100%. With first across the line Sophie and last across with Mitch and Lara. They all are amazing horse riders and it was really great to see them enjoying and encouraging each other. Thanks to everyone for supporting our club and the town of Tooraweenah, it really meant a lot to us in these trying dry times we have been enduring. Hope to see everyone again next year. Notice Dogs must be restrained at all times. Due to dogs being found running loose in increasing numbers at endurance events, it has been resolved that riders are to be disqualified, if their own dog or a dog belonging to their camp is found not to be restrained at all times during the full duration of an endurance event, i.e. from the opening of the ride base to participants until its closure. All chief stewards have been instructed to take action, enforce this rule and report offenders. A ‘no dogs’ policy may be introduced, if offences against this rule continue to occur. Logbook & Identification Procedures

A horse is a novice for a minimum of 90 days from the date on which it successfully completes its first affiliated endurance ride and may only attempt four rides during this period, ie if a horse successfully completes its first ride on 1st July, it cannot upgrade to endurance status until after 28th September and may only enter four rides during this period. There is no limit on the time it takes to reach endurance status. Your horse can be a novice for as many months (or years) as you like. When your horse has successfully completed 240 kms of affiliated endurance (not training) rides, it can be upgraded from novice (blue log book) to endurance (yellow log book) status. Ensure the brands are clear. If not, have the horse re-branded or microchipped (Refer to rule H5.2(a) - (b) ) and H5.3). Have a vet complete the horse identification form (written description and diagrams) and sign it. Identification and microchipping can be done at most rides, but it is advisable to check with the ride secretary beforehand. Complete the logbook application form and attach I.D. form, novice horse logbook and the appropriate fee. Please allow 10 working days from date of posting for return. It is essential to retain a copy of the I.D. form and perhaps have it laminated for the future. PLEASE NOTE An Endurance Horse Logbook will not be issued unless a signed Veterinary Identification Form is enclosed with the application. The I.D. in the novice log book is NOT acceptable. If there is anything that you are unsure of, please do not hesitate to phone me. Jacky Barlow, NSW Endurance Riders Association (02) 4938 0081 109 Sandy Creek Rd Mt Vincent 2323
