In this edition there are ride previews for the majority of the rides left on the calendar together with reviews on the rides already run. Big thank you to Animal Focus for allowing us to use its photos in the newsletter. Hopefully all is on track and going well for anyone who is thinking of attempting a Big Three this season. The State Ride is fast approaching as is the Tom Quillty and before we know it Shahzada will be in progress. That’s how fast time goes. Please read the report and SMC guidance notes in this newsletter. Familiarising yourselves with AERA rules will make your riding life a lot easier. If you don’t have a copy of the rule book, you can download it from the AERA website. Good luck with all your endeavours for the rest of the year and happy riding. The front Cover shows Poppy Kettlewell riding Oso Nicolas at the recent Bumbaldry ride. Poppy was first Junior in a riding time of 5:15. As usual this lovely photo is from Animal Focus. NSW Endurance News May—June 2019 President’s Report Well here we are heading towards the middle of the year already, rides are well under way and most are being well attended. I feel the one ride per weekend format seems to be working well. So far this year we have had 8 rides with total of 955 entrants, not too bad I think. The sport is looking great and the year ahead looks promising. Now for some house keeping. I would like to remind all members that when you join this Association you agree to abide by all of its rules, regulations, guidelines and policies. These extend beyond just Horse Welfare and also cover Member Conduct, Harassment, Conflict Resolution and such things as the Social Media Policy. All of these policies are available on the NSWERA website. I would also like to remind all members that your behaviour can directly affect the way our sport is perceived and can damage our image in the wider community at a time when we are all working to increase membership and strengthen our sport. Back to the fun stuff. The NSW State Championships and the Tom Quilty Gold Cup are looming and before we know it they will be upon us, so please start planning your attendance. We have three rides left in the lead up to our State Champs these being Mudgee, Wingello and Tumut. If you plan these rides correctly you will top up your horse’s fitness superbly. Unfortunately at the moment we have no rides between the State ride and the Tom Quilty so some home training will be required. That’s all for now, see you all around the traps as they say. Cheers Tony Warren NSW ERA COMMITTEE MEETINGS Meetings are currently held at Richmond Club Cnr. East Market and Francis Street, Richmond Meetings commence at 6.00pm sharp. All members are invited to attend. Next Meeting Dates 17 May 2019 14 June 2019 19 July 2019 16 August 2019 NSW Endurance News May—June 2019 Page No. 2 NSW SMC notices First Aid Officers It is now a requirement that the First Aid Officer’s name be recorded on the CS Ride report. The First Aid Officer will be required to complete the First Aid Officer’s Report if an injured person is assessed by the Officer to have a suspected head injury. This form is to be given to the CS and is to be read in conjunction with the Concussion in Sport policy. This policy and forms are found on the website. Horse registration labels Please note that it is the responsibility of us all to ensure that our horse has a current Endurance Horse Registration Label in the horse’s logbook. I refer you all to point 48.1 of the Logbook. "A horse of Endurance status shall only be permitted to enter an endurance ride if it has a current endurance horse registration label in the logbook" If anyone turns up at a ride without the above requirement being satisfied you will not be able to start. The onus is on all members to check how many pages you currently have in your horse’s logbook. Once you see that the logbook is complete or nearing completion, please order a new one. You should allow for a two week turnaround. If you do, all will be well. John Howe for NSW SMC Log Books No log book – no ride. Make sure you have a membership card to prove your membership. Take your manners with you as well and make sure your horse is registered. Also take a lead for your dog. FEI Registered Horses "Trainers and competitors with FEI registered horses - don't forget that FEI Rest Periods also apply after National events (AERA affiliated rides) and extended rest periods apply for Lameness vet outs and where Invasive Treatment is administered! Ignorance of the rules is no excuse and FEI oversee the enforcement of these rules!" Please refer to rules 815.3 and 815.3.1 Essentially the rest periods are: 0 – 46k 5 days Over 46 – 86km 12 days Over 86 – 126km 19 days Over 126 km – 146km 26 days Over 146 km 33 days. In certain circumstances, extended rest periods apply. It’s up to you to familiarise yourself with the rules. In it Tony refers to our Code of Conduct and requests that people consider what they are doing and saying before they act. Once again, at last night's SMC meeting (26th April) we spent an inordinate amount of time discussing what looked like rather major breaches of our code of conduct. So instead of looking at ways to suitably expend $29,000.00 worth of grant money that we have received, we spent close to two hours wading through letters of complaint and Facebook screen shots, trying to decide what to do next with a couple of members who seem quite intent on turning our endurance events into verbal battlegrounds. Last night's meeting started at 6.00 p.m and finished at close to midnight. Remember that SMC members often have a 5 or 6 hour journey to get to the meetings and as long to get home. We are on the SMC to hopefully, administer our sport in a positive manner that will allow us to grow endurance well into the future. Now I enjoy positive debate and planning for the future, I do not enjoy dealing with the negative behaviour of small group of members who seem intent on causing grief. I would like to refer you all to section 26 Code of Conduct on page 27 of the rule book. Especially 26.2. Every rider and their support personnel shall conduct themselves at all times: a) In a courteous, respectful and professional manner, and shall expect reciprocal courtesy, respect and professionalism from other persons with whom they interact and, b) in a manner so as not to bring the sport of endurance into disrepute and c) in accordance with the AERA Social Media Engagement rules. 26.3 every rider is responsible and accountable, unless compelling circumstances dictate otherwise for the: a) behaviour of their support personnel and b) behaviour of all persons in their camp. As of last night the SMC would plead with members to consider the consequences of their actions and while it might be good fun to let drive at someone via the medium of Social Media, the results in the cold light of day are often not pretty. We take no pleasure in sending members off to the IDP for possible sanction but please believe me that as an SMC we are fed up with not being able to do positive things for our sport. We are all volunteers, some of us have been doing this for over 20 years and we do like to ride our horses too. Be assured that if you, for whatever reason, breach the code of conduct, as I have outlined above, you should be prepared for the consequences that may just take away your riding privileges. So, in closing I would urge you all to treat and respect others as you would like to be treated and respected, yourself.
