    Kaufman Astoria Studios unveils 34,800 s/f backlot December 23, 2013 - New York City United States senator Charles Schumer and New York City council member Jimmy Van Bramer recently joined George Kaufman and Hal Rosenbluth of Kaufman Astoria Studios to unveil New York City's first Backlot in Astoria. The landmarked studio, once the home of Paramount Pictures, created the outdoor "black-box" working stage to allow productions the ability to film outside in a controlled environment, providing more flexibility and reducing the need to film on city streets. The completion of the block-long Backlot marks the completion of the newest addition to the growing Kaufman Astoria campus, a vibrant arts and cultural district in Astoria. The event, led by Kaufman Astoria executives also included NYC mayor's office of media and entertainment commissioner Katherine Oliver; senior vice president of film, arts, and culture development for New York State Rhoda Glickman; senator Michael Gianaris; borough president Helen Marshall and assembly member Aravella Simotas, was on Stage K, where Amazon's new hit Alpha House is filmed. The official ribbon cutting was held at the new gated entrance of the historic studio on 35th Avenue. "The Backlot is an exciting new development for the film and television industry in New York as well as for this area of Astoria. It will draw more world-class productions to New York and gives these productions much needed outdoor space to create temporary sets that can stay up for as long as they need to shoot," said Hal Rosenbluth, president of Kaufman Astoria.

The Development Lease (Block 643, Lot 1) includes the main studio building and the Expansion Studio Lease (Block 644, Lot 45) includes the expansion studio building. The properties are within the former Army Pictorial Center, now known as the Astoria Studios Historic District (see the Site Map enclosed). The entire Development Lease parcel and 35% of the Expansion Studio Lease parcel were conveyed to the City by the United States of America, acting by and through its General Services Administration, pursuant to a quitclaim deed dated February 17, 1982 (the “Deed”) and the Historic Surplus Property Program that is administered by the National Park Service. PROPOSED TRANSACTION: KAS is in the process of negotiating the sale of its leasehold interests and business operations under the foregoing Subleases to a purchaser. NYCEDC is entitled to 25% of the net sales proceeds and net refinancing proceeds pursuant to the Development Lease and 17.5% of the net sales proceeds and net refinancing proceeds pursuant to the Expansion Studio Lease (both hereinafter referred to as “Transaction Payment(s)”).

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘LIGHTS, CAMERA, ASTORIA!’ EXHIBITION EXPLORES THE HISTORY AND RENAISSANCE OF THE ASTORIA STUDIO October 26, 2013–February 9, 2014 Astoria, New York, October 25, 2013—Museum of the Moving Image pays tribute to the legacy of filmmaking in Astoria with an exhibition that traces the history of the Astoria studio, a local landmark with deep roots in the culture of New York City. Lights, Camera, Astoria!, on view from October 26, 2013, through February 9, 2014, explores each phase of the site from its start as Paramount Pictures’s East Coast production facility in the 1920s, a center for independent filmmaking in the 1930s, the U.S. Army Pictorial Center from World War II into the Cold War, the site’s rebirth in the late 1970s, to the present day Kaufman Astoria Studios, a thriving motion picture and television studio, and a vibrant cultural hub that includes Museum of the Moving Image, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, and restaurants and cafes. Lights, Camera, Astoria!, on view in the Amphitheater Gallery, features more than 100 objects from the Museum’s collection, including film stills, behind-the-scenes photographs, and marketing and design materials to explore the rich legacy and renaissance of the studio campus. With material from silent-era films featuring Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson as well as other stars, early talking films featuring the Marx Brothers, World War II training and propaganda films, such modern classics as Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence (1993), and television shows like Sesame Street (1969–), The Cosby Show (1984–1992), Nurse Jackie (2009–), and Orange Is the New Black (2013–), the exhibition reveals the significant role that Kaufman Astoria Studios continues to play in energizing its surrounding community and making moving-image history.

    DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION INITIATIVE BASIC INFORMATION Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) Region: New York City Municipality Name: New York City Downtown Name: Long Island City County: Queens Downtown Description - Provide an overview of the downtown and summarize the rationale behind nominating this downtown for a Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) award): Long Island City (LIC), known as the Fourth Central Business District of New York City, is an important economic center for the region with a diverse set of industries with good paying jobs. The community is poised for accelerated growth through recent major infusions of both public and private investments. However, these investments have not resulted in a truly integrated community. LIC contains populations who are underserved and who need to be better integrated into the community so that the community’s growth is an opportunity for all. Our proposal as a Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) seeks to build on work funded in part by the Regional Economic Development Council, which identified the need to, and recommended some strategies to, establish better linkages between the massive developments and opportunities now presented for LIC’s future and our local populations, and to help ensure that our community is cohesive and inclusive economically, socially, educationally, and culturally. We seek to maximize our burgeoning community’s assets to become a livable, mixed-use community with abundant connectivity among our residents and workers, to improve the quality of life for all, and to set up lasting means for community inclusion so that the pace and pressure of development in LIC leaves no one behind. As a downtown geographic designation, LIC has a core central district that is dense with commercial and industrial activity as well as new residential growth.
