It was announced as the League’s 20th franchise on May 21, 2013 and is the first and only Major League Soccer Club located within the five boroughs of New York City. Majority owned by , which is in turn majority owned by H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, New York City FC plays its home games at . The iconic ballpark is also home to minority owner, the . In acquiring the franchise, City Football Group demonstrated to Major League Soccer the following key qualities • BELIEF IN US SOCCER - recognizing the unique, stand-alone investment opportunity in one of the most rapidly growing football markets in the world; • PASSION FOR THE CITY OF NEW YORK - building a soccer club in the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities which currently has no soccer team within any of the five boroughs; • STRONG CONFIDENCE IN MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER as a well-run league that continues to grow and compete with many of the leading soccer leagues in Europe and around the world. In 2010, City FC, also owned by City Football Group, built a rooftop soccer pitch at PS72 (’s Lexington Academy), and in 2013, New York City FC was officially launched on that same pitch. Since then, the first-of- its-kind, synthetic grass pitch has provided hundreds of young people a safe place to play soccer, and City has proudly served more than 30,000 young people to date across the five boroughs. The Club kicked off their inaugural MLS season in March 2015 and has former US National Team captain as its Sporting Director and former World Cup winner as its coach. Representing the five boroughs is in the DNA of NYCFC, as it endeavors to reflect the best of the city in all its activities. Examples include: • YOUTH DEVELOPMENT The Club’s Youth Affiliate Program works with 11 local teams, and is designed to ensure a clear pathway for the local youth soccer community to reach the highest level of competition. The Club has recently announced a new girls academy program providing elite development trailing to girls from U-14 to U18 age groups in the tri –state area. • THE CLUB BADGE was a product of co-creation with fans who were invited to submit their own designs and create a ‘badge of badges’, and the final design was inspired by the old token. • Color Scheme The inclusion of orange in the Club’s color scheme is homage to New York’s Dutch heritage, also found in the New York city flag and the stadium corner flags, merchandise and captains arm band are based on the New York colors. • AN INCLUSIVE AND WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT NYCFC is deeply committed to working with its local com- munity to create an inclusive and welcoming environment, reflective of the diversity of New York, and an identity shaped with and by the city. Such work includes fundraising and sponsorship partnerships with New York Ram- blers Soccer, NYC and the world’s first LGBT inclusive soccer club. The New York City Soccer Stadium will offer not only a premier soccer experience, but will create a sense of place, in the heart of a thriving community, with facilities designed to serve the needs of those around it Yards | 43 Key Member Resumes NEW YORK CITY FOOTBALL CLUB

Harlem River Yards | 45 City Football Group Experience

CITY FOOTBALL GROUP (CFG) was established in May 2013 with a vision to become the most significant, successful and socially relevant football organizations in the world.

CFG is the owner of football businesses in major cities around the world, including football clubs, academies, technical support and marketing companies.

These Clubs include Manchester City FC in the English Premier League, Manchester City Women’s FC in the Women’s Super League, New York City FC in the MLS, and Melbourne City FC and Melbourne City Women’s FC in the A-League and W-League.

The Group’s investment in New York City FC came five years after the acqui- sition of English Premier League Club Manchester City FC by the same own- ership. The transformation of the club which was to follow, was unanimously welcomed by the Club’s fans. In playing terms, investment in the squad led to the winning of trophies for the first time in almost four decades. Off the field, investment was substantial and diverse. All functions of the Club were transformed, and the Club’s “City in the Community” program expanded to touch more than 40,000 local lives a year, with many thousands overseas also benefitting from the Club’s global community outreach.

The most visible area of investment was in the area of infrastructure devel- opment, with a number of major projects completed, including a staff office building, a pioneering fan zone, expansion of the Etihad Stadium, and the construction of a world leading 80-acre youth development and first team training facility, the City Football Academy. The community focused and con- sultative approach to such infrastructure projects was widely recognized and respected by the city of Manchester, the UK media and general observers alike.

In December 2015, a 13% shareholding in CFG was divested to a China Media Capital-led consortium, creating an unprecedented platform for the growth of CFG clubs and companies in China and internationally.

This network of entities will collectively be responsible for the develop- ment and operation of the New York City Football Club Stadium. 46 | Harlem River Yards New York City Football Club Experience SOCCER IN THE US

THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY RIVER CAMPUS, NEW YORK, NY BRONX HOUSING COURT, BRONX, NY , NEW YORK, NY Rafael Viñoly Architects STADIUM ARCHITECT

Viñoly, founded in 1983 and based in New York City — with offices in London, Manchester, Abu Dhabi, Buenos Aires, Chicago, and Palo Alto — is an internationally renowned architectural firm with projects spanning six continents. Over the past thirty-three years, the practice’s key trademark is its ability to reinvent institutional typologies and integrate the public realm into civic buildings.

The uniquely diverse work the firm has completed includes award-winning courthouses, museums, performing arts centers, convention centers, athletic facilities, banks, hotels, hospitals, laboratories, recreational venues, residential complexes, and commercial, industrial, and educational facilities. Projects range in scale from laboratory casework to large urban commercial and institutional master plans. The firm has also completed several projects involving the restoration and expansion of buildings of significant historical and architectural value.

Guided by the design leadership of principal, Rafael Viñoly, the firm is managed by the Vice President Jay Bargmann, who also administers projects jointly with each of the firm’s project directors. These experienced architects—many of whom have been with Viñoly for two decades or more—share the advanced, centralized resources of the firm as well as a high level of commitment and a rich database of knowledge. This structure guarantees consistency and high standards of design and documentation and enables the firm to maintain its longstanding record of successfully com- pleted fast-track, design-build projects, as well as conventionally scheduled and organized assignments worldwide.

The practice’s atelier design intelligence coupled with the capabilities of a large, multi-disciplinary firm produces ap- propriate, creative responses to program requirements. We consider design an integrated field in which programming, function, implementation, engineering, economic feasibility, and cultural impact are not independent concerns or dis- ciplines but elements which should be equally evaluated and addressed. This approach requires versatility, expertise, and above all a pragmatic overview that expands the need for creativity rather than limits it.

CITY FOOTBALL ACADEMY

Viñoly’s design for Manchester City’s Football Academy was born out of the club’s desire to consolidate its existing facilities and strengthen its connection to the East Manchester community while creating a “world-leading” training facility to raise athlete performance and standards through enhanced training, injury management, sports science, and research facilities. The scheme remediates and transforms a brownfield site adjacent to MCFC’s Etihad Stadium into Manchester City FC’s flagship headquarters and training facility.

Viñoly answered the needs of Manchester City FC in organizing the site, program adjacencies, and security zones for youth, elite players, and the general public. The resulting design connects the elements to their surroundings at Eastlands while organizing the programs to ensure a high level of functionality and security for youth and elite players.

Immediately adjacent to Etihad Stadium, the Club Headquarters and Youth Stadium is the public face of the Manchester City Football Academy.

PRINCETON UNIVERSITY STADIUM

Princeton University’s aspiration was to create the most distinguished, collegiate stadium in the United States and to replace the existing Palmer Memorial Stadium, which had deteriorated beyond repair. Princeton required that the stadium be flexible enough to accommodate the broadest range of sports events–football, soccer, , and track and field–and to serve as a year-round facility.

The original stadium, surrounded by a chain-link fence, sat empty most of the year because Princeton typically previously scheduled only six football games a year. In addition, the underside of stadium seating is often a dark and unattractive area, cluttered with stadium service elements. In the new stadium, the space between the perimeter “wall building” and the gates for spectator seating area was designed so that it could become an attractive place for the university community throughout the year. By moving service functions into the “wall building,” introducing natural light into the circulation, and bringing extensive planting into the space, a new kind of covered public space was created, one that can be enjoyed independently from the sports events. It is also a multi-sport facility, used for the football, soccer, and lacrosse, with spectator seating for the adjacent track and field facility.

MENDOZA STADIUM

This soccer stadium was specially built for the 1978 World Cup games. Designed to accommodate more than 50,000 spectators – 24,000 in standard seating – in a broad and asymmetrical bowl, it is embedded in a natural depression in the foothills of the Andes. A wide concourse deck housing the facility’s services and secondary spaces surrounds the bowl just beneath the protruding lip of the stadium; the deck facilitates above-ground passage through the structure and offers 360-degree views of the dramatic landscape.

Within the stadium, the single rank of stands descends at a gentle slope to a standard playing field. Unusually, players and spectators are not separated by the high fence typical of contemporary stadia; instead, the field is protected by a low railing and a wide moat. The stadium’s shallow, gently sloping bowl, the profile of the Andes, visible from most of the stands, and the unobtrusive security architecture combine to give the spectator a sense of being cradled within the landscape.

The widest and tallest section of the bowl, facing east and paralleling the longer axis of the field, is also the only section to be sheltered from sun and rain. A monumental horizontal concrete-and-steel beam supported on two canted columns in turn supports a seemingly delicate translucent steel-framed canopy. The same beam houses the stadium’s press boxes, announcer’s booth, and high-angle camera positions.

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY ABU DHABI ATHLETICS FACILITIES

Located on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi combines a liberal arts and sciences college, select graduate programs, and advanced research, all fully integrated into a major research university. It is a co-educational and residential campus that comprehensively addresses student well-being.

The Campus Center combines the gym and the library, elements that are traditionally separated, as well as a variety of other student facilities. The athletic facilities here include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a performance gymnasium and indoor track, a fitness center, squash and racquetball courts, and dance and exercise rooms, positioning health and wellness as an important element of student life. Two oculi bring light from the library into the gymnasium.

The north site provides outdoor facilities for competitive football, tennis, volleyball, ad track and field events, as well as opportunities for both men and women to participate in a wide range of recreational and instructional programs.

LEHMAN COLLEGE, THE APEX

This building was originally conceived as a conventional physical education facility that is part of the City University of New York. The program, however, was redefined to a large extent during the design process, after an in-depth analysis of the client’s real needs. The final design, while meeting the functional requirements of the college’s physical education program and providing performance and ancillary spaces, also makes an urban planning gesture by providing a northern boundary for the Lehman College campus and completing its main circulation axis, thereby allowing the building to function as a gateway.

With the agreement of the commissioning body, Viñoly analyzed existing athletic facilities at comparable institutions and conducted an extensive study of the needs and preferences of students and faculty at Lehman College. As built, the facility includes a main gymnasium, an auxiliary teaching gymnasium, and, what was at the time of its completion, New York City’s only indoor Olympic-size competition swimming pool, along with other training facilities, offices, locker rooms, and a ballet theater.

1 SEAPORT

1 Seaport soars 60 stories above the waterfront in the Seaport District of Lower Manhattan offering unobstructed river and city skyline views from nearly each of the 98 light-filled residences. The elegant, all-glass tower is the first condominium project in the most historic neighborhood in the city.

Hill West designed a building that embodies the essence of living on the water by day or by night. The designers digitized images of light on water to create a pattern by which the 4 types of glass on the building exterior mimic the sparkle and drama of the water and reflect the sky. Building infrastructure is located out of flood danger and off the ground floor. The main lobby, reached by a dramatic staircase, is also located on the 2nd floor. Incredible amenities include a pool with an infinity edge up against the glass that merges into the panoramic views of the city beyond.

Balconies spiral up the building in a helix-like movement, drawing the eye from the base to building crown. By night, 1 Seaport illuminates the skyline with long baguettes of lights wrapping its crown like a modern residential lighthouse in the city port.

COURT SQUARE CITY VIEW TOWER

The tallest building in , Court Square City View Tower will rise 66 stories. The 800 condominium units will have unparalleled 360 degree views of Manhattan and the surrounding skyline. This all glass curtainwall building is a sleek, monolithic structure with re-entrant corners articulating the form and creating a place for balconies. The designers used two shades of glass, a neutral blue on the broader faces of the building and a clear green on the edges. The result is a building that appears to expose its special interiors beyond its glassy exterior. The base and crown are screened with metal fins that add lightness and conceal parking at the base. This language of metal fins allows the private residential entry and the public MTA entry at the building base to both relate to each other and be separate.

The building features a double-height sky-lit amenity space with a mezzanine lounge overlooking a pool on the 3rd floor. On the 5th floor amenities overlook an exterior terrace. A fitness center, sauna, spa, yoga room, parking, and storage round out the luxury experience.

Harlem River Yards | 87 Hill West Experience with Residential Projects WITH AFFORDABLE COMPONENT 365 BOND

365 Bond Street sits on the at the edge of historic Carroll Gardens. The project is the first major development in Gowanus, an edgy industrial neighborhood that is quickly becoming a destination. 365 Bond is the first of a pair of buildings with 363 Bond, presently in construction across First Street. Designed as a complimentary pair, each building stands alone but shares a commonality of form and materials. The facades relate and both buildings look and acts like a series of buildings working in tandem to create a well-balanced neighborhood. The buildings both front a richly landscaped public esplanade designed by Brooklyn landscape architect Lee Weintraub and are adjacent to the historic Carroll Street Bridge.

At 365 Bond, weathered brick, raw concrete and large expanses of mullioned glass make reference to the area’s industrial past. Although the building occupies an entire block its variety of scale and height make it feel like a neighborhood rather than a building.

The units are anything but identical in this building, with over 66 unique layouts. There are duplex townhouse units with entries off the street that are surrounded by front gardens much like other townhouses in the neighborhood. Many units have private roof terraces and those that don’t can enjoy one of many outdoor amenities or a view into the serene inner courtyard from the floor to ceiling industrial windows. Amenities include a living lobby and community center, several lounges, a fitness center, valet parking, roof decks and community spaces for kayak storage and a boat launch.

The neighborhood surrounding the 1.8 mile Gowanus Canal is in the midst of a renaissance. “The project challenged us to find a sweet spot between edgy industrial and Brooklyn brownstone. We managed that by weaving some common materials through a varied landscape of height and scale,” states David West.

Sky, 605 West 42nd Street, boasts an impressive 1175 units in a 60-story luxury rental tower. The approach to this building by foot or by car is through a cobbled entry court featuring a fountain holding a sculpture by artist Yayoi Kusama. The entry canopy is illuminated with an array of Hollywood bulbs that enhance the feeling of arriving at the foot of a red carpet. The soaring form of the tower is an exclamation point at the west end of 42nd street.

The glass skin was designed to seamlessly marry exterior and interior, allowing for floor to ceiling glass in residential units and spectacular city and river views throughout. While the building is a single volume, the form is articulated as two slender rectangles slipped past each other, giving a verticality and slenderness that belies the nearly 1,000,000 square feet contained within. Each face of the tower is differentiated by subtle shifts of glass color and metal trim.

At night, the building’s edges glow with thin bands of white light that culminate in the illuminated crown and the night sky. Many units on the western side have balconies with all glass railing panels that allow unobstructed view of the river and surrounding city.

The building’s extraordinary amenity package includes NY City’s first Lifetime Athletic; a health and wellness club that is open to public membership and has a separate entry. It houses a full sized court, Turkish bath, two outdoor pools, an indoor pool, and over 16,000 square feet of outdoor wellness space.
