Granville solar proposal going to Zoning Board By Greg Fitzpatrick Correspondent GRANVILLE – Another solar project is being proposed in Granville. On Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Granville Town Hall, Granville resident Doug Roberts will be looking to get a variance approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals for his 40-acre solar proj- ect. The state’s Green Communities Act requires that all solar projects be a maximum of five acres, meaning a variance is needed for Roberts’ 40-acre project. Located at 274 and 275 South Lane, each parcel will contain a 20-acre large scale ground mounted solar photovoltaic installation. “I have a commitment to renewable energy, I think it’s the way to go,” said Roberts. Since the land on South Lane used to grow apples, Roberts wants the 40 acres to be put to good use as it’s no longer an agricultural entity. “I want to have the least amount of impact on the town,” said WNG File Photo Roberts. “I’m trying to do the right thing by the town.” For this project, Roberts is working with C-Tec of Bloomfield, Conn., who has over 30 years of experience in the solar industry and installs solar to both residential and commercial customers. THE WESTFIELD NEWS WWW.THEWESTFIELDNEWS.COM SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2018 - PAGE 5 1st pot shops in eastern US get OK to open in Massachusetts By BOB SALSBERG Associated Press BOSTON (AP) — Two marijuana stores in Massachusetts were given the green light Friday to begin selling to recreational cus- tomers next week, making them the first commercial pot shops in the eastern United States. Both stores, one located in Northampton and the other in Leicester, said they would open Tuesday morning after the Cannabis Control Commission, the state's mari- juana regulatory agency, authorized them to begin operations in three calendar days. The announcement ends a long wait for commercial sales to begin in Massachusetts. The state's voters legalized the use of recreational marijuana by adults 21 and older in 2016, but it's taken more than two years for state legislators and regulators to reach the point where the first stores can finally open. The target date for retail sales had been July 1. DPW funds alone of $24,000 were used for paving Middle Road, and $32,000 for the last paving project on Eastwood Drive. The Mayor noted that the roads that were done were all over the city, some on the outskirts of town. Billips said they included some very bad roads, such as North Road, Granville, Dry Bridge and Shaker. Billips said one difference this year was the $400,000 budgeted in the DPW Construction line item. Two years ago, that line item was $150,000, and last year, $300,000. “We spent it all,” Billips said, adding that they also did a lot of stormwater work on Granville, North Road and Shaker Road. The $400,000 in the budget did not cover the construction costs for the department. Billips said the DPW spent $365,000 alone for the cold in place recycling work on Shaker Road, and the same amount plus Chapter 90 funds to do that work on North Road. “We budgeted $400,000, but did $1 million worth of road work,” Sullivan said, and added in Meals tax money, which came in above what was estimated. He and the department heads said other work not included in that $1 million is all of the pot hole and infrared work, plus $200,000 work of drainage work on Granville road, crack sealing, and tree work. “Even line striping follow up is sometimes $50,000 to $75,000,” Cigal said. “Collectively, we spent $5 million. That’s a number we could do annually - $5 million a year every year to repair and upkeep our streets,” Mayor Sullivan said, adding that this year $2 million of the work came from sewer funds. “Usually we use $1.2 million in Chapter 90, and spend a total of $1.7 to $1.8 million on the roads,” Billips said. As far as next year, “a lot of this will be in the City Council’s hands on what they take for votes on the budget and the stormwater fee increase,” he added. Sullivan said he hopes to budget as much in construction next This Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018 photos shows traffic passing by as a car that went off Interstate 684, at the Goldens Bridge year. HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018: This year you will be more sensitive than you have been in the past to the different people in your life. Sometimes a friend or loved one will test you to see whether the new, more-caring you is for real! If you are single, you might meet several different people who could become more than just By Steve Kelley and Jeff Parker friends. Before making a commitment, really get DUSTIN to know any person with whom you are involved. If you are attached, you often find that your rela- tionship becomes more romantic between periods of confusion. Be patient; everything will work out. PISCES knows how to make you daydream.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) HHHH Your mind drifts to other lands and people, perhaps adding an element of nostalgia to your day. Some of you might choose to act on this trancelike mood. Make sure that you do not enter a conflict with a loved one who might be set in his or her ways. Tonight: Think of others, too. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) HHHH One-on-one relating suits you fine -- especially if you throw in some humor and roman- tic moments. However, before you go off and Mastroianni and Hart pursue your fantasies, make sure that you have B.C. handled obligations first. Be a bit more imagina- tive. Tonight: There is no stopping you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) HHHH You experience an obligation that you might not be comfortable with. You could try to back out or change the terms; however, those efforts will backfire. Be open to someone else’s needs. You could have a far better time than you think you will. Tonight: A discussion helps you feel better. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) HHH Observe a tendency to go overboard, at least in your mind. No matter what your choices Cryptoquip are, they will veer you toward excessiveness.
