DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Before she goes to America, Eilis believes that, “While people from the town who lived in England missed Enniscorthy, no one who went to America missed home. Instead, they were happy there and proud” (pg 26). Why do you think the Irish had such a rosy view of America? How are Eilis’s expectations met upon her arrival? 2. As Eilis begins night classes in accounting, she notes the divisions between Italian and Jewish students, and the lack of English or other Irish students. At work, she must confront racial integration when Bartocci’s opens its doors for the first time to black customers. How does Eilis react to the divisions among Europeans immigrants from different countries, as well as those between white and black Americans? How are the traditional ethnic lines of Brooklyn beginning to break down in the 1950s? 3. When Eilis and Tony first meet, she seems more interested in him as an escape from her troublesome housemates than as a genuine romantic interest. Tony, however, is clear about his love for Eilis from the start. Why do you think Eilis is hesitant in her feelings? Is a relationship with such uneven attachment doomed from the start, or do you believe that one person can “learn” to love another over time? 4. Some characters in the novel are referred to as Miss or Mrs., while others are identified by their first name. Does this reflect their relationship with Eilis? Why would Colm Toibin make this stylistic choice? How would your perception of the characters in Brooklyn be different if Tobin had written the novel from the “first- person” perspective of Eilis? 5. -

By analyzing two novels The Story of the Night (1996) and The Blackwater Lightship (1999) by the Irish writer Colm Tóibín, this article proposes the concept of the sick body as an “organic allegory.” Although both novels are set in different places at different times (Argentina in the 1980s and Ireland in the 1990s), they build their stories around a main character who lives with AIDS. The “organic allegory” refers to a discursive-stylistic strategy that establishes a political connection between the personal drama of the dying body and the social framework in which the story takes place. In this way, this article aims to reveal the political-corporeal dimension of these novels and to empower the body as highly political device used in literary production, both conceptually and discursively. By addressing an individual physical tragedy as one of the elements of the parallel, Tóibín’s texts provide to the social drama a carnal dimension, a corporeal way to experience a political, cultural, and economic transition. Through a comparative analysis and close-reading, the examination of both texts unveils the potential of (sick) bodies as formal devices to “understand” and present a political statement. -

The second youngest of five children, Tóibín was born in 1955 in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, in the southeast of Ireland. He studied at the Christian Brothers School in Enniscorthy and then at St. Peter's College, Wexford. In 1972 he went to University College, Dublin to study History and English, graduating three years later. The day after he took his final exams, Tóibín left for Barcelona, Spain where he stayed for three years, teaching English and closely following the political developments in Spain after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in November 1975. He marched in demonstrations supporting Catalan autonomy and Spanish democracy. Tóibín returned to Dublin in 1978 and began work on an M.A. in Modern English and American Literature, which he never completed. During that time he also wrote for several periodicals, including In Dublin, Hibernia, and the Sunday Tribune (Dublin). In 1981 he became Features Editor of In Dublin and, a year later, the Editor of Magill, then Ireland's main current affairs magazine. -

Dissent and Dislocation in Colm Tóibín's Tlte Story of the Night Kirn Wallace Liverpool Hope University College Abstract Colm Tóibín's The Story of the Night (1996) articulates dissent from the nationalist vision of Ireland as an insular nation and challenges the origins of a nationalist state by negotiating the social, political, historical, cultural and religious limits assigned within the nation. Yet Tóibín's writings demonstrate how crossing the limits imposed by politics, religion, history and culture, and moving within, and beyond, the margins can be both empowering and debilitating. Although proposing a way beyond insular representations of Ireland, there is an implicit suggestion within the novels of Colm Tóibín of a need for some form of rootedness to counter the sense of disunity that seems prevalent when the central ideologies of Church and State are challenged. .. how vulnerable the land here was to change, how the sand levels shifted each year. This paper explores the liminal status of Irish gayness in the aftermath of its decriminalization in 1993. Colm Tóibín’s The Blackwater Lightship (1999) tries to reconcile Irish Catholicism and traditional family with new models of Irishness. Declan, the protagonist of the novel, goes back home when he is about to die of AIDS. His return reveals a dysfunctional family which only his disease brings together. His grandmother, mother and sister mourn Declan’s corpse-like body. Making reference to Julia Kristeva’s concepts of “abjection” and “the chora” (1982, 1984), I contend that the hero’s disease is a necessary sacrifice for the family and Ireland as a whole to resurface. The second part of the paper addresses Tóibín’s The Master (2004), whose fictional Henry James counterbalances Declan’s overt homosexuality and AIDS-related death. The Master delves into James’s hybridity as a closeted American of Irish descent opposed to Oscar Wilde’s flamboyant gay Irishness. The restraint of the former and the traumatic downfall of the latter make up the late- Victorian framework through which Declan’s late-twentieth-century sacrifice becomes meaningful. -

A Journal of Irish Studies, n. 8 (2018), pp. 393-406 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.13128/SIJIS-2239-3978-23384 Silence and Familial Homophobia in Colm Tóibín’s “Entiendes” and “One Minus One”1 José Carregal-Romero Universidade de Vigo (<[email protected]>) Abstract: The present study focuses on two of Colm Tóibín’s gay short-stories – “Entiendes” (1993) and “One Minus One” (2010) – in which the homosexual son meditates on his attachment to the dead mother. In both texts, Tóibín characterises the mother-son bond as being fraught with silence, resentment and lack of communication. In “One Minus One” and “Entiendes”, the son’s closeted homosexu- ality coexists with familial legacies of shame, uneasiness and du- plicity. The central characters in the two texts are similar, as they experience the same type of existential exile, solitude and aliena- tion derived from their complex attachments to home and family. As shall be explained, the author dwells on the damaging effects of familial homophobia, highlighting the limitations of the dominant heteronormative family model to accommodate gay sensibilities.
