Biographical Note Novelist Charles Bernard Nordhoff (1887-1947), alone and in collaboration with James Norman Hall, drew from experiences in turn-of-the-century California, where he was raised, in France during his stint as a pilot and ambulance driver during World War I, and in the South Seas, notably Tahiti, as well as from historical events and native myths to produce successful and popular novels. During the course of his life he authored or co-authored sixteen books between 1919 and 1946, as well as numerous articles and essays. Nordhoff was best-known for his collaborative efforts with Hall in the writing of Mutiny on the Bounty, Men Against the Sea,and Pitcairn's Island. The two men's approaches combined well, as they often wrote alternating chapters in their works, integrating their styles more and more seamlessly as the years passed. Scope and Content Professional and personal papers of writer Charles Nordhoff (1887-1947). The material consists of typescripts of Nordhoff's works, correspondence to and from Charles Nordhoff to his co-author James Hall, to various publishers, and letters to and from a variety of friends and relations, including former Secretary of the Interior Gifford Pinchot, Adlai Stevenson, A.P. Watt, Ellery Sedgwick, and others. The collection includes typescripts of Nordhoff's works, extensive family and writing-related correspondence, numerous photographs, and copies of magazines, journals, and comic books in which articles or works by Nordhoff were published. There are approximately one dozen items in French, primarily incoming correspondence. This relatively small but important collection appears to be the only extensive primary source of Nordhoff materials available. COENEN* Few tales from human experience are more compelling than that of the mutiny on the Bounty and its extraordinary after- math. On April 28, 1789, crew members of the Bounty, led by Fletcher Christian, seized the ship and its commanding officer, William Bligh.' After being set adrift with eighteen sympathiz- ers in the Bounty's launch, Bligh navigated to landfall across 3600 miles of ocean in "the greatest open-boat voyage in the his- tory of the sea."2 Christian, in the meantime, recognized that only the gallows awaited him in England and so laid plans to start a new and hidden life in the South Pacific.' After briefly returning to Tahiti, Christian set sail for the most untraceable of destinations: the uncharted and uninhabited Pitcairn's Is- * Professor, University of Georgia Law School.     4 Nordhoff and Hall’s Mutiny on the Bounty: A Piece of Colonial Historical Fiction Sylvie Largeaud-Ortega University of French Polynesia Introduction Various Bounty narratives emerged as early as 1790. Today, prominent among them are one 20th-century novel and three Hollywood movies. The novel,Mutiny on the Bounty (1932), was written by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, two American writers who had ‘crossed the beach’1 and settled in Tahiti. Mutiny on the Bounty2 is the first volume of their Bounty Trilogy (1936) – which also includes Men against the Sea (1934), the narrative of Bligh’s open-boat voyage, and Pitcairn’s Island (1934), the tale of the mutineers’ final Pacific settlement. The novel was first serialised in the Saturday Evening Post before going on to sell 25 million copies3 and being translated into 35 languages.     James Norman Hall James Norman Hall (* 22. April 1887 in Colfax, Iowa; † 5. Juli 1951 in Vaipoopoo, Tahiti) war ein US-amerikanischer Autor, der vor allem durch seinen Roman Mutiny on the Bounty (Meuterei auf der Bounty) bekannt ist. Leben Hall wurde in Colfax (Iowa) geboren, wo er die örtliche Schule besuchte. Nach Abschluss seiner Studien 1910 am Grinnell College war er zunächst in der Sozialarbeit in Boston (Massachusetts) tätig, gleichzeitig versuchte er sich als Schriftsteller zu etablieren und studierte für das Master's degree an der Harvard University. Im Sommer 1914 war Hall im Vereinigten Königreich in Urlaub, als der Erste Weltkrieg ausbrach. Er gab sich als Kanadier aus, meldete sich freiwillig für die British Army und diente bei den Royal Fusiliers als Maschinengewehrschütze während der Schlacht von Loos. Er wurde entlassen, nachdem seine wahre Nationalität festgestellt wurde, kehrte in die Vereinigten Staaten zurück und schrieb sein erstes Buch, Kitchener's Mob (1916), das von seinen Kriegserfahrungen in der Freiwilligenarmee von Lord Kitchener erzählte. Er kehrte nach Frankreich zurück und trat der Escadrille La Fayette bei, einem französisch-amerikanischen Fliegerkorps, bevor die Vereinigten Staaten offiziell in den Krieg eintraten. The breadfruit tree and its leaves appeared to me as a subject as I was raking leaves in my hometown of Mahina (Tahiti), a meditative gesture I have been accustomed to since my childhood: the sound of the metal rake on moist earth, the cracking of dried leaves under the towering trees, and finally the fire to dispose of it all and ward off mosquitoes and evil spirits. It was all there. There is a Tahitian legend that tells the story of Rua-ta’ata, a man who trans- formed his body into a breadfruit tree in order to save his family from famine. As a child I was fascinated by the images this legend conjured: the transforma- tion of Rua-ta’ata’s body into a tree trunk, his arms into branches, hands into leaves, and his head into a fruit to be eaten by his own wife and children. It is fantastical, cannibalistic, sensual, almost biblical, and talks about survival, sac- rifice, and perenniality. Gilles Deleuze wrote about the concept of “becoming animal” and in this case, I wondered how one could become vegetal. Uru also has a colonial history. On his first voyage of discovery, James Cook landed in Matavai Bay—in the district of Mahina—with the mission to follow the Transit of Venus.

THE SOUTH PACIFIC IN THE WORKS OF ROBERT DEAN FRISBIE Natasa Potocnik Abstract Robert Dean Frisbie (1896-1948) was one of the American writers who came to live in the South Pacific and wrote about his life among the natives. He published six books between 1929 and his death in 1948. Frisbie was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on 16 April1896. He attended the Raja Yoga Academy at Point Loma in California. Later he enlisted in the U. S. army and was medically discharged from the army in 1918 with a monthly pension. After his work as a newspaper columnist and reporter for an army newspaper in Texas, and later for the Fresno Morning Republican, he left for Tahiti in 1920. In Tahiti he had ambitious writing plans but after four years of living in Tahiti, he left his plantation and sailed to the Cook Islands. He spent the rest of his life in the Cook Islands and married a local girl Ngatokorua. His new happiness gave him the inspiration to write. 29 sketches appeared in the United States in 1929, collected by The Century Company under the title of The Book of Puka-Puka. His second book My Tahiti, a book of memories, was published in 1937. After the death of Ropati 's beloved wife his goals were to bring up his children. But by this time Frisbie was seriously ill. The family left Puka-Puka and settled down on the uninhabited atoll of Suwarrow. Later on they lived on Rarotonga and Samoa where Frisbie was medically treated.

A number of classifications of learning outcomes or objectives are well served by a teaching style employing the case approach. There seem to be as many different types of case study methods as there are writers on the subject. Perhaps the most useful typology of case methods, in part because of its simplicity, is that de-eloped by Gay Wakefield for the public relations field. Because of the clarity of character and issue development, the 1935 film version of "Mutiny on the Bounty" was chosen for use in a sophomore level course titled "Principles of Leadership." Using Wakefield's typology, the film is a case history which becomes a case analysis during class discussion. Almost all lf the topics that would be covered in a course in leadership are present in the film. The film meets the requirements of a good case as set out by other typologies of case studies.

Christianity is a religion of historians. Other religious systems have been able to found their beliefs and their rites on a mythology nearly outside of human time. For sacred books, the Christians have books of history, and their liturgies commemorate, together with episodes from the terrestrial life of a God, the annals of the church and lives of the saints. Christianity is historical in another, and perhaps, even deeper sense. The destiny of humankind, placed between the Fall and Judgment, appears to its eyes as a long adventure, of which each life, each individual pilgrimage, is in its turn a reflection.
